Pregnancy Friendly Skin Care Products

Pregnancy skin care is not easy, especially once you throw in the issues caused by hormonal flucuations and the need to avoid certain skincare ingredients during pregnancy. I’ve looked at a ton of skin care product ingredients list to find these pregnancy friendly skin care products!

Pregnancy Friendly Skin Care Products

There are also a lot of great products that are pregnancy friendly, but not necessarily from a full pregnancy skin care line. While it would be great to be able to use an entire line of special pregnancy skin care, most of us don’t have that luxury. Rather than special ordering an entire line of organic skin care made in France, we’re in the aisle at our local big box store, reading labels we don’t understand.

There are a lot of really great skin care lines in those big box stores, and many of their products are pregnancy friendly! Read on to see which (exact) products you can pick up and use without worry while you are pregnant. You can also see a list of product suggestions including some products I used while pregnant.

Note that I’ll be adding to this list as time goes on, for the brands that are listed I have gone through the entire line’s products, reading those long and tedious ingredient lists. If I wasn’t sure about a product, it was left off of the list. I’ve noted what date I went through a brand’s product list, note that there are sometimes reformulations that aren’t necessarily announced, so always double check the ingredient list!

Guide to Skin Care while Pregnant or Nursing

Don’t forget to check out the other articles in my Pregnancy and Nursing Skin Care Guide! I have also recently added Pregnancy Safe Sunscreens and Pregnancy Safe Facial Sunscreens, BB & CC Creams, so be sure to check out those posts as well!

I have gone through every product’s ingredients list from the brands listed below. If your favorite product isn’t listed (but the brand is) then the product did not meet my pregnancy safe skin care criteria. Note I am reviewing US versions of products, as the majority of my readers are in the US.

Please utilize the list below for products, and if you would like to ask if something is pregnancy safe please provide an ingredient list and limit yourself to a few products. I have readers asking about 20 products sometimes, and as much as I want to help, I simply don’t have enough hours in the day to check so many products.

Been waiting for your post! Thank you!!! At least we have the body shop and neutrogena here, i have more options to choose from! Fingers crossed I'll find most of them though 🙂

Possibly just listing ingredients to stay away from would be more effective. No glycolic acid, no retinols, etc. I think giving people information on what and why they shouldn't use certain chemicals would go further than plugging certain brands.

  3. August 26, 2013 / 6:03 pm

I have a post listing the ingredients to avoid here:
Which is mentioned and linked to in the post above. Unfortunately looking at ingredients isn't easy for everyone so a long list of exact products that are ok has been requested by hundreds of readers. I get 1 or 2 emails a day requesting help with ingredients, I've started with the lines that I'm asked about most frequently, but it took HOURS to go through each brand. This post is here for me to refer readers to, hoping to help readers and save me many emails. I'm sorry that you feel I've done this only to plug certain brands, but that isn't the case. I apologize.

Thank you so much for this! You’ve actually done us a great favour so we could know what can be used! I started freaking out when I knew that almost everything I was using had an ingredient I had to avoid and I wouldn’t find anything to use! This post makes it so easy to find the right stuff!

I had that same freak out when I was pregnant with my first daughter!

Yes, thank you for this list! I stopped using retinol before we started trying, then stopped using salicylic acid (1.5%) and lactic acid (to be on the safe side) when I found out I was pregnant at about 4 weeks. I never thought to check the rest of my routine – cleanser, toner and moisturizer because I just figured my serums and anti-aging creams would have the strong ingredients. I recently started breaking out and asked my OB what she recommended for a safe acne spot treatment. She suggested azelaic acid so I found The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% (nice to see it on this list!). It has other ingredients in it though so I was trying to look every single one up to make sure it’s okay. At this point, I thought I should also check every ingredient in my regular routine and found out I’ve been using a moisturizer with alpha arbutin in it – Sunday Riley Tidal – for the whole of my pregnancy (16 wks now). This is apparently closely related to hydroquinone which is a no-no! I’m a bit panicked now but I guess all I can do is stop using it and let my OB know at the next check up. It’s exhausting checking every ingredient in products so I’m very thankful to have this list to easily find a substitute moisturizer to use for the remainder of my pregnancy and during nursing. I really appreciate you taking the time to go though all these!

            April 9, 2018 / 12:45 pm

I’m glad this list helped you! Congratulations on your pregnancy 🙂 I wouldn’t stress greatly about using the Tidal, we don’t know what hydroquinone would do while pregnant or nursing, so it’s on all of the lists but lots of people have no idea and use it through their entire pregnancy without issues.

thank you ever so much for listing all the safest products. I am pregnant and would love to know which brand/products are safe to use during this period, not only the ingredients.
    great post, thanks again..

Thank you! I have recently found your site and I am very grateful that you take the time to do it. I am certain there are many others that appreciate it as much as I do. I am hoping to see the 'Yes To' line show up at some point, but maybe not…:) I do not want to comment too quickly like one of the folks above asking about links etc (be nice people!), but have I overlooked a link to makeups that are pregnancy safe? Could we or should we look forward to this? With all the recent news about lead in lipstick etc, I worry about that as well since I often feel I need to enhance or hide things if you know what I mean!:) Thanks again!

  6. August 28, 2013 / 12:58 am

Thanks! I'm pulling up the Yes to line to add now 😀 I haven't thought about a makeup post actually, the lines change so frequently. Do you think just including foundation, concealers would be enough?

  7. Anonymous
    August 29, 2013 / 2:05 pm

This is a great list! I have been searching online for such a listing the past couple of days after learning the products I am currently using contain unsafe ingredients. It has been much easier to find a list of what to avoid (various chemical names) than what's safe. Thank you!

I would also love a makeup list and think foundations (especially the newer "hot" BB & CC creams) is a great starting place. :o)

  8. August 29, 2013 / 4:37 pm

Hi, thanks for all the info and time you took getting it. I'm in TX and there is a brand here that a lot of spas use called Rhonda Allison. I had a facial 2 weeks ago and she gave me a cleanser and moisturizing cream that was from Rhonda's safe while pregnant list of products. For some reason I didn't look at the list of ingredients at the time (didn't think I needed to since it was on the safe list) but yesterday I noticed retinol as one of the ingredients in the cream. I called their headquarters here in TX and talked with an esthetician and she said that the cream is for sensitive skin and has very little retinol in it and reassured me it was ok. She said it is not prescription strength and that it is derived from Vitamin A. What do you think? Would you mind looking at their website?
I was thinking about getting the ultra hydration cream instead and saving the other cream (moisture au lait) for after pregnancy. Thanks 🙂 Kelly

  9. August 29, 2013 / 5:57 pm

Retinoids are the biggest item on the no-no list, and there isn't a "safe" amount. Pretty much all physicians say to avoid it completely while pregnant, though it is safe while nursing! I'd save it for after delivery. The Ultra Hydration Cream looks safe (and very hydrating) to me!

  10. August 29, 2013 / 6:08 pm

Ok, thanks so much Christine! Glad I found your blog!

This is a great list. I am looking for a new cleanser / toner / moisturizer and I was happy to come across this list of things to avoid & suggestions on what to try.

I thought I found my next cleaners (Mario Badescu's Enzyme Cleansing Gel), but then when reading the full product description, I saw that while the ingredient list does NOT say Hydrozy Acids, under "benefits," the hydroxy acids are listed–which seems very strange to me!

"Our Best Selling Daily Cleanser. This non-foaming, gel cleanser thoroughly removes the day’s make-up, dirt and oil without drying the skin. Papaya and Grapefruit Extracts are exfoliating Alpha Hydroxy Acids that help prevent dulling build-up that can cause blackheads and pimples."

Is it ok afterall, or should I avoid? (And if anyone can share a good pregnancy-safe cleanser for someone with combo skin & acne problems, I would greatly appreciate the tip!)

  12. August 31, 2013 / 3:35 pm

I made the executive decision to leave on products with extracts, which yes, will contain alpha hydroxy acids but at a much lower level than if they were on the lists themselves. You'd get a lot more by just eating that Papaya on its own than my using the small amount in the cleanser, if that makes sense! We're still considering extracts like that (except Willow due to the higher amount of Salicyclic Acid) to be safe

Are there any safe foundation products?
The list above is extremely helpful, but for those who suffer from acne, it would be even more wonderful to find out about foundations and concealers…
In terms of acne treatment, is there anything we know about using Zineryt solution in pregnancy?

  17. September 8, 2013 / 4:03 am

Hi, Thank you very much for your helpful list! I do have a question about the Mario Badescu Hyaluronic moisturizer – the second to last ingredient listed is Propylparaben…is that ok? I thought I read parabens are on the no list. Thanks!!

  18. Anonymous
    September 8, 2013 / 5:13 pm

    Thank you again!
I currently use Clinique even better makeup SPF 15. It has a long list of ingredients, but is it safe?
My pregnancy made me realise how dependent we are on chemicals in our daily care: shampoos and conditioners, toothpastes, facial creams, make up, nail polish, etc.
Are there any shampoo & conditioner and make up products anyone could recommend for when pregnant, please>

  19. September 8, 2013 / 5:31 pm

Parabens are not currently on the no list for physicians. The evidence we have doesn't support adding them at all, though you can easily avoid them if you want to. If you're avoiding them in products, you should also avoid any foods that have them (you'll get a LOT more exposure via food than lotions) and note that they're naturally found in products like blueberries as well.

  20. September 11, 2013 / 12:35 am

@Anon, I don't have a list for your foundation, so I'm not sure. I'm sorry!

I just ordered the body shop's tea tree oil blemish fade night lotion, and then I realized it was not on this list! Can you remember if it was one of those products you left off just in case or if it was a big no-no?
Thank you so much for this website! I'm sure it is extremely time consuming but please know it is very appreciated 🙂

    September 12, 2013 / 12:24 pm

What's your opinion on Eminence products, specifically their Bright Skin Care line? Thanks!

  23. September 12, 2013 / 2:31 pm

Anon- I've gone over EVERY product in these lines, so if it isn't on the list it isn't safe. A bunch of the Body Shop's Tea Tree items weren't safe, so there must have been something in it. Only the Body Shop items listed above were fine!

Meagan- Unfortunately Eminence doesn't list the ingredients on their website, so I can't comment. In general all skin brightners except licorice root are not safe.

  24. September 13, 2013 / 10:34 pm

Hi, Here are the ingredients for VITAMIN E NOURISHING NIGHT CREAM:

As you can see it's full of parabens, how is this safe on your list???
Water, Glycerin, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Dimethicone, PPG-2 Myristyl Ether Propionate, Cyclomethicone, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Butter, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cetearyl Octanoate, Myristyl Myristate, Panthenol, Benzyl Alcohol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Propylparaben, Fragrance,Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, Talc, Manganese Violet, Iron Oxides.

  25. September 13, 2013 / 11:09 pm

Never mind on my prior comments on Body Shop E Vitamin Night Cream and paragons. Just noticed your comment that they are not on the no list for physicians.

Thanks for a great post. Very helpful!!!!

Hello Christine! I am so happy I found you. Your website is so so helpful! There are a few products that I am using now that I will no longer be until after delivery.

Do you know if Estee Lauder's Perfectionist CP+R or Advanced Night Repair for face or eye ok to use?

What about the Skinceuticals Phloretin CF that have the following ingredients ok to use? Dipropylene Glycol, Alcohol Denat., Ascorbic acid, butylene glycol, triethyl citrate, phloretin, feurlic acid

Thank you so very much! What incredible information you provide!!!!

  27. September 18, 2013 / 12:26 am

I don't have access to the ingredient lists of any of the Estee Lauder products, so I can't comment.

    The Skinceuticals is fine!

Not that I know of, I’ve never seen that ingredient mentioned on any list of things to avoid. As well, all the derms I’ve talked to say to not worry about hair products and it is mostly rinsed off immediately and the scalp doesn’t really absorb it.

Due to differences in formulations around the world (eg- Canada is often different than the US even, though I live <1 hour from Canada by car), I am no longer answering questions about formulations without a list of ingredients.

I recently bought Deep Cleansing Mask and Refining Facial Polisher from Omorovicza. I saw those two in your safe list. Is there any limitation on using the products? I contacted them directly but they keep repeating to ask my doctor whether their ingredients are safe for pregnancy. Now i am doubting if their products are safe. What do you think?

    • 15mins
      January 6, 2018 / 10:05 am

I think they’re safe based upon my criteria, but the ultimate guide is always your doctor. Many brands won’t comment either way.

Hi! I’m so grateful I found your blog because I’m a big beauty Nut but had to forgo a lot of my usual products during pregnancy. Now that i’m nursing, I was surprised that my doctor told me to only stick to natural products. Your list is so helpful because kiehls is one of my favorite brands! I can’t seem to see other brands though aside from the updated ones from December 2017. Is there another link? Thanks!

I would love to know if the La mer Soft Cream is okay for pregnancy/nursing stages. As well as the Bioderma Micellar water. Here are the ingredients of the latter:

Is it correct that I can only see from Clarins to Ren brands on this page? 🙂 Cause I read through the comments and some mentioned Body Shop, Neutrogena, etc.

        Thank you!!

The Bioderma looks fine. I can’t find the La Mer ingredients anywhere, so I am unable to comment on that.
I’ve recently revamped this post, I hadn’t looked at many ingredient lists in about 4 years, so I erased those lists (so many had reformulated!) and I’m slowly going through more brands on the ULTA and Sephora sites. It takes hours, sooo… yes, it’s going to take a long time! If there’s a particular brand you want to know about let me know, but I previously had about 20 or 30 brands in the post.

No, there are a lot of sources that are split on the Licorice Root, so I’ve been leaving them off of my list of those that are safe. All of the safe Ole Henricksen products are listed above, if a product isn’t listed then I don’t consider it safe enough to list. For all of the brands here, I’ve gone through the list of every single product they offer.

Hi this is an absolutely amazing blog and you are a fantastic resource!

I am looking for your recommendations for a good spf to use whilst pregnanct – do you still recommend first aid beauty 5 in 1 spf 30?

I am also getting myself a bit worked up about salicylic acid and it’s derivatives and wondered if Benzyl salicylate is considered a no no ingredient (it is currently in a few of my products which I am steering clear of at the moment)

I am also looking at the ordinary brand and wondered if you think the Ascorbyl glycoside solution is ok to use? It’s ingredient are

Aqua (Water), Ascorbyl Glucoside, Propanediol, Aminomethyl Propanol, Triethanolamine, Isoceteth-20, Xanthan gum, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Ethoxydiglycol, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol.

Thanks in advance – hoping you can stop my worrying 🙂

    • 15mins
      February 1, 2018 / 10:05 am

So, most of the ingredient list for the FAB 5 in 1 SPF 30 is ok, the reason that it isn’t currently on this ok list is is the licorice root. I’ve seen it pop up here and there as something to avoid, but I haven’t been able to verify anything in the medical literature (Yet, I’m still looking). So I haven’t put it on my no-no list, but I’m not saying “that’s fine” for products that have the ingredient when asked. It’s my in “limbo” ingredient LOL So, otherwise that one is ok, but I’m really not sure about the licorice root extract.

I do consider the Benzyl salicylate part of the salicylic acid family and don’t recommend those products.

I don’t see anything of concern in that The Ordinary product. I went through the ingredient lists of all their products on Sephora (I love that Sephora has lists for almost everything), but didn’t check that product as Sephora doesn’t sell it.

      I hope that helps!

      Looking at the products

These are ok: Cornflower Recovery Serum, Rice Milk 3 in 1, Bamboo Firming Fluid, Stone Crop Hydrating Gel

These I have concerns with, I’ve listed a few of the ingredients that are red flags for each, but most of them have other ingredients that are ones to avoid also.
Yam & Pumpkin Enzyme Peel 5% (Glycolic acid and Willow bark extract), Clear Skin Probiotic Masque (Willow Bark, Sodium Salicyla), Clear Skin Probiotic Moisturizer (willow bark, Salicylic Acid), Youth to the People – Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer (retinyl palmitate), Monoi Age Corrective Night Cream for Neck and Face (Sodium Salicylate, Salicylic Acid), Calm Skin Chamomile Exfoliating Peel (just says Vitamin A, which needs to be clarified what chemical formulation)

You are amazing!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to go through the list :)….There are a few skincare items I’ll need to stop using ASAP! Thank you!!! I know Eminence Organics have ensured me their products are safe during pregnancy, but I was skeptical. So I am very glad you were able to take a look at these for me 🙂

          February 23, 2018 / 1:42 pm

Some of their products contained a surprising number of ingredients that are widely held as needing to be avoided, so I’m surprised they said that! I’ve only used their products a few times (my local spa uses them for when I go have facials) and I do really like them, but I would definitely be careful with their line if you’re pregnant.

I was just curious about what in the Kiehl’s Midnight Oil Cleanser is considered unsafe and if that is still a problem while nursing? I’m brand new to skincare (I know, I should have started 10 years ago) and am trying to build a bf-friendly routine for early-30s skin.

Thanks for doing all the work and sharing your knowledge!

I’m only confirming safety for products that I can find a full ingredient list from a reputable source. I haven’t found the full list (only “key ingredients” are listed on Kiehl’s, Sephora and Nordstrom sites), and after checking around so much for the ingredient list I call it a day and move on to the next product honestly. So, I just don’t feel comfortable stating if that product is safe or not without seeing the full list.

Hi! Thanks for your hard work on this list! I was looking for at toner and checked out the Clarins Chamomile one you had mentioned. It seems to have Retinyl Palmitate on the ingredient list which I thought was a no-go during pregnancy? Can you let me know? Desperately looking for a toner and face wash I can use 🙂
    Thanks again!

You’re right, I don’t remember seeing that before, or I may have missed it, though I do a “find” on the ingredients page for retinoids and such (I’m so paranoid that my eyes are going buggy looking at ingredient lists and I’ll miss something!). I’ve removed it from the list.

      Hi there,
All of the products listed are the ones that are safe from that brand. The moisturizer you have here isn’t listed because it isn’t safe, it’s the glycolic acid in it. Folic acid is good for prevention of neural tube defects, but you need ingest large amounts (usually in your prenatal vitamin) early in pregnancy. For the Boscia product, you need to avoid willow bark during pregnancy.

Purified Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Certified Organic Filet Of Aloe Vera), Glycerin (Vegetable), Fragrance (Natural Rose), Hamamelis Virginiana Extract (made from Certified Organic Witch Hazel), Rosa Centifolia (Rose) Flower Water, Citric Acid, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract

And the grape seed oil only has grape seed oil and vitamin E

thank you! I noticed that Cosmetic Warrior had Tea Tree Ol in it…is that ok? I read somewhere that Tea Tree Oil is not good during pregnancy….I just want to be sure 🙂 I stopped using the oil as a spot treatment.

I keep hearing rumors of it not being good but have only found that on random oil sites, nothing medical. I will say massive quantities aren’t good, but a little in one product should be fine!

Hi there! I was wondering why Sunday riley “good genes” was left off the list. I’m struggling with hormonal acne soooo bad and really wanted to try it. I thought lactic acid was considered very safe, is there anything else in it that is concerning? Here’s the ingredient list:
Opuntia Tuna Fruit (Prickly Pear) Extract, Agave Tequilana Leaf (Blue Agave) Extract, Cypripedium Pubescens (Lady’s Slipper Orchid) Extract, Opuntia Vulgaris (Cactus) Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract & Saccharomyses Cerevisiae (Yeast) Extract, Lactic Acid, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Butylene Glycol, Squalane, Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone, Ppg-12/Smdi Copolymer, Stearic Acid, Cetearyl Alcohol And Ceteareth20, Glyceryl Stearate And Peg-100 Stearate, Arnica Montana (Flower) Extract, Peg-75 Meadowfoam Oil, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Oil, Triethanolamine, Xantham Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Steareth-20, dmdm hydantoin

It was left off because of the licorice root. It’s included in many lists of ingredients to avoid, but not others, and I’ve found conflicting information. I haven’t added it to the list of ingredients to avoid, but I no longer “ok” products that include it.

Thank you for posting this article! I’ve using using it constantly to check products in my collection before using them not that I’m pregnant.

I did see that a Drunk elephant added a new product on Sephora’s site since you’ve posted this – The C-Tango multivitamin eye cream. Can you let me know if this is safe to use? The ingredients are as follows:

That looks like it is full of amazing ingredients! I’m adding it to my wishlist of products to buy 🙂
Unfortunately the Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is licorice root. That’s been popping up on a lot of “to avoid” lists from official sources that I trust and I haven’t been able to find any information either way, to avoid or not. I haven’t added it to my official avoidance list yet, but when approving products I’m saying I would avoid it.

Your post is such a great help and I am learning a lot from this blog.

Recently i changed to goats milk soap with honey and oatmeal for my body thinking it is safer. But I noticed that goats milk have alpha hydroxy acid ( AHA) from the lactic acid. I bought it from

Ingredients listed: Fresh Goat’s Milk, Saponified Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Red Palm Oil, Oats, and Honey.

Do you think it is safe to use?

      March 12, 2018 / 2:56 pm

Within an ingredient like milk it’s ignored, not enough to make a difference. You’re getting a lot more exposure just by drinking milk/dairy yourself.

Can you also please check ingredients for Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF 50. This is something i found online but I haven’t check whats written on the package.

Active ingredients: Avobenzone, Octinoxate. UV Smart Booster Technology: an encapsulated complex of antioxidant vitamins C and E; scavenges UV-induced free radicals while enhancing photoprotection. Oleosome Technology: a Safflower-derived, sunscreen-filled capsule that provides enhanced moisturization while boosting SPF. Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed and Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea): soothing botanical extracts that provide anti-enzyme and antioxidant protection. Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C) and Tocopherol (Vitamin E): antioxidants that improve skin smoothness and softness, and help control damage caused by free radicals.

    Thank you so much!!

    March 14, 2018 / 7:44 am

After reading more of your blog, I think the Missha and Dr. Jart Cicapair are not safe because of the benzyl salicylate and citric acid.

Would you mind looking at these ingredients?

The Missha I wouldn’t use, but the Citric Acid you kind of need to take with a grain of salt. You’re still eating fresh fruits right? There’s a lot more citric acid in a glass of OJ (which your body is purposefully absorbing) than all of the Dr. Jart, and your skin is actually barrier. Some stuff gets in, but it isn’t the same. 🙂 This Dr. Jart also looks good, actually I think better because it has a tone of peptides in it!

I know your list of the ordinary products is based off what’s listed on Sephora’s website but do you have any thoughts on their foundations? The ingredients of their coverage foundation are:

Aqua (Water), Coconut Alkanes, Dimethicone, Isodecyl Neopentanoate, Caprylyl Methicone, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Glycerin, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Coco Caprylate/Caprate, Cetyl Diglyceryl Tris(Trimethylsiloxy)silylethyl Dimethicone, Sucrose Laurate, Dipropylene Glycol, Polysilicone-11, Tocopherol, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Polyglyceryl-3 Polyricinoleate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Hectorite, Dimethicone/ Bis-Isobutyl PPG-20 Crosspolymer, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Sodium Chloride, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin. I’m actually only looking at skincare, not makeup. Unfortunately so many brands change their makeup formulations so frequently that I just don’t feel like I could create a post looking at a list, that list would change quickly but people would still trust the post. If that makes sense! I might be giving the “ok” to something that isn’t ok any more.

Having said all of that, this list of ingredients looks safe to me!

Hi! First, THANK YOU! Your blog has so much helpful information 🙂 I am not pregnant yet, but I want to go ahead and get myself into a good skincare routine with all pregnancy-safe products so I won’t have to make too many adjustments in the future.

I see you have a lot of Philosophy products listed, but not the Purity Made Simple Ultra-Light Moisturizer. I think this is a newer product, so I just want to confirm the reason for it’s absence from your list: have you read the ingredients and it is something to avoid, or have you not had a chance to review it yet?

Thank you again for your help!

yes, parabens are fine. You should probably know that they’re not actually implicated in anything, the EWG has read a LOT more into them than the current studies indicate. They’re also naturally found in a lot of food such as blueberries. So, if you’re really avoiding them you’ll need to add a lot of dietary restrictions.

You are an angel! Will you please let me know if this product is pregnancy safe?It is an eye wipe I use for Blepharitis and it also serves as an eye make-up remover. It is manufactured by Alcon Laboratories formerly Novartis Co:

Ack! I fully admit I didn’t look at the writing on the front of the bottles, I just read the ingredients on the Sephora site. I was amazed Sephora had the ingredients. Not a single one of the acne products has salicylic acid or its derivatives listed as ingredients, but they say it in small writing on the front?? What on earth?? I’ll pull the whole line. I spent so long just looking at the ingredient lists, and none of them say it. I just looked at like 15 of them. How could they be so wrong?

Hi, I just ordered some Drunk Elephant products because I thought they were safe. Why is the C-Firma not listed? Some brands are more liberal than I am in what they consider to be pregnancy safe (I’ve seen some brands list even retinoids as safe, which makes my OB Gyn and Derm friends shudder!). The Firma C has Licorice Root, which I’ve yet to add to my list but I’ve seen so much conflicting info that I’m no longer saying things are safe with that ingredient. I hope that makes sense 🙂

      • Desiree
        April 4, 2018 / 12:49 pm

I know licorice root has been mentioned as something to steer clear from with our skincare. Is it the same thing with tea? I was drinking ginger tea and noticed it also had licorice root in it, so I stopped drinking it. Can I still drink it or should I steer clear from that as well?

          April 4, 2018 / 1:32 pm

I’d probably talk to your doctor about it, but ingestion will get a lot more of the ingredient into your body than skincare ever would. First, you’ll drink more than you could ever apply to your face, and second your skin is actually a barrier whereas your intestine will be actively absorbing things.

Thank you for the time and effort you have put into this information (all of it, not just this list)! I wanted to clarify about the Eve Lom cleanser and radiance mask – I thought the clove oil in the cleanser and the camphor in them weren’t safe? Just wanted to make sure as I already have them so don’t want to spend money if I don’t have to!

Also wanted to ask about whether the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Night Concentrate is safe:

Water, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Cetearyl Olivate, Polyacrylamide, Sorbitan Olivate, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer,Dimethiconol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Synthetic Beeswax, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Benzyl Alcohol, Butylene Glycol, Chlorphenesin, Trehalose,Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Laureth-7, Mannitol, Carbomer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Micricrystalline Cellulose,C12-14 Pareth-12, Sodium Hydroxide, Fragrance, CI 77289, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Magnesium Aspartate, ZincGluconate, Copper Glucante, CI 42090

I’ll wait until post-baby to use acid peels, serums, vit c, etc. Keep it simple and save a few $ while I’m at it 👍

    Hi Christine,

Thank you so much for this website and for answering these questions.

I started looking at the ingredients in my hair care products—which I hadn’t thought to do—and saw that both the dry shampoo (Klorane) and shampoo (L’Oreal Everstrong) I have been using have benzyl salicylate in them. I’ve stopped using them, but it looks like a like of shampoos have some sort of salycilic acid or derivative. Do you have any recommendations for safe shampoos? Thank you so much.

I had specifically asked my OB and I’ve asked a few Derms about this as well, but they all say not to worry about hair care during your pregnancy. 99.9% of it doesn’t even touch your scalp, and as your hair is mostly dead keratin you can’t absorb anything through it anyways.

What would your opinion be on this lash serum?
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Chloride, Monobasic Sodium Phosphate, Dibasic Sodium Phosphate, Disodium EDTA. May contain: Phenoxyethanol, Tropolone. Polyester-5, Quaternium-15, Iron Oxides

Also, I know you’ve said you weren’t commenting on makeup but figured I’d ask anyway… I thought BareMinerals mineral makeup and primer were safe? I have had a really hard time finding makeup and such as well, mostly because the ingredient lists are so hard to find. I’ll start working on a post with primers. Which of the BareMinerals makeup were you interested in specifically? They have a lot of products!

That’s great! Thank you! I specifically left out the name and brand of the LashExtend- I’m impressed you knew it!

I’m currently using bareMinerals Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 (in Medium):

        – Zinc Oxide 21%
Bismuth Oxychloride, Mica, Iron Oxides, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide.

        bareMinerals Blush in GoldenGate:
Mica (CI 77019), Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Titanium Dioxide (CI77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77499, CI 77491), Carmine (CI 75470)

and Prime Time™ Foundation Primer (Original):
Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone, Silica, Magnesium Silicate, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Extract.

I know that you’re wary of Licorice so I’m guessing you’ll recommend avoiding the primer…

The AHA is lactic acid, which your body makes anyways. It’s fine to use 🙂

this is super helpful! I wonder if the list also fits for breastfeeding period?

And can you please check this product:
    1. SK-II facial treatment essence:

*on the bottle it said GALACTOMYCES Ferment Filtrate

    2. Lancome Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Serum (I think this one would not be good cuz it has Salicyloyl Phytosphingosine, want to confirm with you)

The SK-II looks fine. The Salicyloyl Phtosphingosine is an interesting ingredients, it’s a unique ingredient to Lancome and I had to delve into the medical literature on Pubmed to figure out if it is related to Salicylic Acid for sure (and it is). So I think you’re right, I’d avoid that one while pregnant.

The Exfoliating Grains have willow bark, so should be avoided. The night firming balm says something about a plant based retinoid alternative… retinoid themselves are to be avoided, but I don’t know what ingredient they’re actually talkinga bout. I don’t see anything that is a vitamin a derivative (some plants are higher in vitamin A, typically beta carotene, but that’s fine to use while pregnant. It also won’t work the same way as a retinoid). I don’t see any ingredients in that one I’m concerned about, but that description is strange!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I love skincare but I am super terrified to put anything on my face when I’m pregnant This list has helped tremendously! I have a couple products from The Ordinary and didn’t see the Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA on the list. Is this safe? The ingredients on their website state:

Aqua (Water), Alpha-Arbutin, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Propanediol, PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Lactic Acid, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Ethoxydiglycol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

I also have an AMAZING makeup remover balm from a Korean brand called Heimish: All Clean Balm. It literally melts all the makeup away without putting any water. The ingredients look benign but wanted to get your thoughts on it since I’ve read that some websites say to avoid tea tree while pregnant.

Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Polyethylene, PEG-8 Isostearate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Fruit Extract, Freesia Refracta Extract, Iris Versicolor Extract, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Extract, Lilium Tigrinum Extract, Leontopodium Alpinum Extract, Nelumbium Speciosum Flower Extract, Narcissus Pseudo-Narcissus (Daffodil) Flower Extract, Rose Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Amyris Balsamifera Bark Oil, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Oil, Boswellia Carterii Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, 1, 2-Hexanediol

Thanks for all your help! I also send BIG KUDDOS for keeping up this blog while being a physician! Truly inspiring!

      Hi there,
The Alpha Arbutin is left off of the list because it isn’t safe, Alpha Arbutin is basically hydroquinone. If the product is left off of the list for the brand then I reviewed it and didn’t feel it was safe.

Tea tree is fine in small amounts topically, just don’t drink it! (people do this, for real.) The cleanser looks fine to me.

Hi, I have a history of skin rashes and usually have to use a strong corticosteriod or betamethasone with a steroid pack to get it to go away. I have been trying to deal with it without using those. The doctor had me get an over the counter steroid cream that I occasionally use that has kept it under control. I recently tried CeraVe healing ointment the last few days and it has been healing it! However, I am worried if it is safe or not. I figure it is better than the steroid ointment the OB prescribed. Thanks!

I see there are none of the Burts Bee’s body lotions listed as safe. Wondering if that is true or if this is just a list for facial lotions? I was looking at the Burts Bees with Aloe. I’ve been looking for some type of lotion that would help with acne scarring on the back of my legs and on my back for this pregnancy. 🙁 If you have a recommendation that would be great. Aqua (water, eau), glycerin, decyl cocoate, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cera alba (beeswax, cire dabeille), butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, polyglyceryl-3 stearate, glyceryl stearate citrate, cetyl alcohol, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, butyris lac (buttermilk powder, babeurre en poudre), chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, calendula officinalis flower extract, centaurea cyanus flower extract, tilia cordata flower extract, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, anthemis nobilis flower extract, hypericum perforatum extract, parfum (natural fragrance), tocopherol, sucrose stearate, xanthan gum, glycine soja (soybean) oil, canola oil (huile de colza), lactic acid, citric acid, glucose, sodium chloride, sodium stearoyl lactylate, sodium benzoate, magnesium aluminum silicate, phenoxyethanol, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidase, limonene.

Thank you for this list of products! It is really helpful! I found a couple that I have and have been using, but some didn’t make it to the list.
In my first trimester hormones really played tricks with my skin and it became so dry and irritated, uff… I jumped on to some pregnancy skincare lines such as Belli and Mamma Mia but they were so aromatic, which was a surprise, because in pregnancy we are sensitive to smell! Also a couple of these creams must have had something in them that caused a terrible allergic reaction.:-( The only ones that helped me with dryness/irritation were Moisture Surge Intense and Moisture Surge Extended Relief by Clinique I used before pregnancy. I know that one of them contains Citric Acid and I asked Clinique Customer Service to provide me with the info of how much Citric Acid is used. They didn’t get back to me yet. Other than this ingredient, could you tell me if these creams are safe to use during pregnancy?

    Thank you in advance,

    Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief:

Water\Aqua\Eau , Dimethicone , Butylene Glycol , Trisiloxane , Glycerin , Betula Alba (Birch) Bark Extract , Silybum Marianum (Lady’S Thistle) Extract , Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract , Saccharomyces Lysate Extract , Sucrose , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water , Trehalose , Thermus Thermophillus Ferment , Sorbitol , Oleth-10 , Tromethamine , Caffeine , Hydrogenated Lecithin , Sodium Hyaluronate , Tocopheryl Acetate , Palmitoyl Oligopeptide , Caprylyl Glycol , Glyceryl Polymethacrylate , Peg-8 , Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer , Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate , Carbomer , Hexylene Glycol , Disodium Edta , Phenoxyethanol , Red 4 (Ci 14700) , Yellow 5 (Ci 19140)

Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator:

    Water\Aqua\Eau , Cyclopentasiloxane , Glycerin , Butylene Glycol , Dimethicone , Cetyl Ethylhexanoate , Squalane , Disteardimonium Hectorite , Peg/Ppg-18/18 Dimethicone , Lauryl Peg-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone , Ahnfeltia Concinna Extract , Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Extract , Caffeine , Whey Protein\Lactis Protein\Proteine Du Petit-Lait , Cholesterol , Sodium Hyaluronate , Petrolatum , Peg-150 , Sucrose , Pyridoxine Dipalmitate , Linoleic Acid , Tocopheryl Acetate , Citric Acid , Polysilicone-11 , Propylene Carbonate , Glyceryl Polymethacrylate , Peg-8 , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract , Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Bran Extract , Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate , Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12 , Sodium Citrate , Sodium Hexametaphosphate , Chlorphenesin , Phenoxyethanol

Those are both fine! I had a list of Clinique on here, but found out that the lists on Sephora (where I was shocked to find the lists, Estee Lauder doesn’t usually release lists like that) were incomplete so I took all of the products down. I wouldn’t worry about the citric acid. If you drink a glass of OJ you likely get way more Citric Acid than jars of this stuff has in it!

You rock:-) It is my first pregnancy and I am trying to go as natural as possible and just got a little shocked by some of the stuff they put in skincare and cosmetic products… Still, trying to take it easy and enjoy this period of my life:-) Our moms somehow did it without checking every little thing online and we came out fine, lol) Have an awesome day!

Hi there! Thank you so much for this amazing post!! I’ve been searching and searching and find that it’s almost a rabbit hole out there to find what you need regarding personal care and pregnancy.

    EltaMD AM Therapy Facial Moisturizer

Purified Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Ethylhexyl Isononanoate, Niacinamide, Lauryl PEG-9 Polymethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Sodium Chloride, Piptadenia Colubrina Peel Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycerin, Allantoin, Caffeine, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Capryloyl Glycine, Undecylenoyl Glycine, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide.

I also was looking at their face washes and see ‘fragrance’. sigh….

IF you know of any pregnancy safe, non-comedogenic, gentle face washes and face lotions – recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

This face moisturizer has Willow bark, so I wouldn’t use it. Fragrance itself is fine in pregnancy, I would just avoid it if you’re sensitive.

It sounds like you need the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial products! They’re very gentle and moisturizing.

      • April 16, 2018 / 12:03 pm

Thank you so much!! After doing more research on products over the weekend, I found a brand called Avene. A lot of it’s products seem to say: Hypoallergenic, Non-Comedogenic, Fragrance-Free, Soap-Free, Paraben-Free, Oil-Free, Soy-Free, Gluten-Free, etc. SO I’m hoping that these are safe and okay?

        Avene Skin Recovery Cream

** is Mineral Oil bad in general?

        Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser Lotion

        ** is o-PHENYLPHENOL bad too?

Active Ingredients: 10.0% Zinc oxide, 5.5% Titanium dioxide
Inactive Ingredients: Purified Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Octyldodecyl Neopentanoate, Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Sodium Chloride, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Alumina, Hydrogen Dimethicone, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Citric Acid, Iron Oxides.

All of these are fine! Avene is a great brand, I really love their products. The EltaMD is actually included in my pregnancy safe sunscreen list too 🙂

Also re: the individual ingredients you were talking about, o-phenylphenol is fine, same with mineral oil. For some reason mineral oil has gotten a bit of a bad reputation (many of the food-babe types have bad talked it as it is an oil by-product and obviously that makes it bad, right??) But it’s actually fine. It’s even non-comedogenic. 🙂

I can’t figure out what they think the gold is doing? For years I’ve been looking for the actual evidence that it does something, and I’ve asked Derms about it and they kind of avoid the whole question LOL I guess it sounds fancy?

Thank you so much for this list! So, I see Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream listed, but wonder if you have a stance on the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream with SPF 30. I read the post on salcylic acid, but am not sure if it’s safe for pregnancy given that it’s so close to the makeup of aspirin – it is listed in the ingredients of this Kiehl’s product. Can you help?
    Here are the ingredients:
Water, glycerin, squalane, dimethicone, PEG-100 stearate, glyceryl stearate, silica, octyldodecanol, stearic acid, phenoxyethanol, palmitic acid, tocopherol, dicaprylyl carbonate, steareth-100, acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, ophiopogon japonicus root extract, carbomer, chlorphenesin, capryloyl salicylic acid, caprylyl glycol, xanthan gum, dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer, disodium EDTA, sodium hydroxide, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, limonene, ectoin, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, myristic acid, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, pseudoalteromonas ferment extract, ethylhexylglycerin, linalool, salicylic acid

I haven’t addressed Belli yet because I pretty much agree with all of their products that are labelled to be pregnancy safe. All of these look fine to me!

I use 100% Pure cosmetic products – do you know if these are safe during pregnancy? They claim to use only natural ingredients in all of their products.

I haven’t had time to review their products yet. Unfortunately being “natural” doesn’t mean “safe”.

I know that you normally don’t do cosmetics, but I just looked at my foundation and the Octonoxate has me concerned. Thanks so much.

So glad that I discovered your blog yesterday. I am working on changing out all my skincare and makeup as we plan to start a family. I was so shocked by all these horrible ingredients with unpronounceable names in so many skincare and makeup we use. Yet so many “Natural” brands that still contain harsh chemicals!! – I know natural means nothing. Your blog is a life saver! I am going through your entire series right now…

Many thanks! Please do go through La Roche when you have time… thanks in advance!
