Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.
Here you’ll find every pregnancy safe skincare product from Elta MD as of 7/23/2021. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. If they release a new product that is not listed here, please comment below and I will add it. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.
Don’t See Your Product? Read This Before You Ask About It…
Please read the Pregnancy Beauty Guide intro first, where you will learn which products you actually need to worry about (spoiler alert, you don’t need to worry about all makeup or hair products). I will not review products that fall into the “don’t worry about it” categories. If you want to ask about a specific product, I require that you follow these guidelines for asking about pregnancy/nursing safety. You can also learn more about how to use these pregnancy safety lists. I will delete questions that don’t follow the guidelines or are rude.

Hi, I have a question about the So Silky Hand Creme; it has sclareolide, which it says is derived from clary sage – which I believe is not safe during pregnancy(?) What are your thoughts?
Clary safe is fine during pregnancy. You need such giant amounts to do anything that the medical community doesn’t say to avoid it.
Thank you!

Hi, why is Elta Md UV clear tinted sunscreen not considered safe for pregnancy? It says that they use a mineral based Zinc Oxide Formula..
They do, they use the amount they need to hit their goal SPF. But they also add in chemical sunscreens to improve shelf life. This discussion is relevant: Why did you say this product has sunscreen when there isn’t an SPF?

Hi!
Is the EltaMD UV Sheet Face Sunscreen lotion broad-spectrum SPF 50 safe for pregnancy?
I have already reviewed all products in this brand that I have access to their ingredient list, please refer to the post about how to request a product review. I need a full ingredient list to review your product, more info here: why I need an ingredient list to comment on product safety
Is the elta md uv daily spf 40 broad spectrum and the elta md up clear pregnancy safe?
I need a full ingredient list to review your product as I’ve reviewed all of the ones I have access to (in this case within the last month I’ve reviewed all of the products on Elta, SkinStore and DermStores sites). More info here: why I need an ingredient list to comment on product safety.
Hi there. Thank you so much for putting all of this information together. It is greatly appreciated. I have read information that octinoxate was something to avoid during nursing? That studies have seen it in breast milk? Just wondering your thoughts as there is so much information online and often hard to know what is fact. Thank you so much for your help
1 study found in that chemical sunscreens in very small amounts do reach the breast milk, but the issues we’re mostly worried about via exposure in pregnancy (development of hirschsprungs, bleeding that could threaten the pregnancy, etc) are no longer an issue. The reason to avoid chemical sunscreens under 12 months is due to skin irritation, not any other issues. I don’t know anyone in the medical community that currently recommends avoidance after delivery, though it’s easy enough to just keep using pregnancy safe products if it makes you worried. I hope that helps!
Wow I truly can’t thank you enough for this prompt reply and setting my mind at ease. Amazing. Thank you for your thorough research! I’m so grateful for this knwoledge
Hi! As far as sunscreen goes, is it a problem if it actually comes in contact with babies skin? Say off my arm when holding or feeding her..? Just a thought I had!
No, not a problem really. We don’t recommend sunscreen use under 6 months of age just due to how sensitive their skin is, they don’t tolerate it well and tend to get rashes easily. 6-12 months we recommend only physical sunscreens for this reason. If the baby gets a lot of sunscreen on her I would wash it off, but usually if it’s on your arm and she touches you it wouldn’t be enough for her to have a skin reaction.
Hello,
Regarding sunscreen and nursing – I’m nursing now so I no longer have to worry about chemical sunscreens? I thought I had to stick to the mineral types. My all time favorite sunscreen is chemical so I’m very happy now. It’s from the brand Dermaceutic and has the following ingredients:
Aqua, Isononyl isononanoate, Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, Cera alba, Titanium dioxide,Glycerin, Homosalate, Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, Octyldodecanol, Bisethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, Butyrospermum parkii butter, Oleic/Linoleic/ Linolenic polyglycerides, Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenethyl alcohol, Tocopherol, Bisabolol, Octyldodecyl xyloside, PEG-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Zinc stearate, Hyaluronic acid, Silanetriol, Alpha-glucan, oligosaccharide, Sodium ascorbyl phosphate, Pseudoalteromonas ferment extract, Bioflavonoids, Dipotassium glycyrrhizate,Glyceryl caprylate, Silica, Ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate / VP copolymer, Magnesium sulfate, Corn oil, Methylpropanediol, Sclerotium gum, Tocopheryl acetate, Sodium benzoate, Dimethiconol, Glyceryl undecylenate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Citric acid, Xanthan, gum, Dimethicone, Caprylyl glycol, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Glucose, Salicylic acid, Sodium hydroxide, Carrageenan, CI 17200, CI 14700, CI 19140, CI 42090.
Would you please review?
Thank you so much!

Hi,
I am confused how the Elta MD UV Clear is considered a chemical sunscreen. It’s primary ingredient is Zinc Oxide?
The active ingredients are Zinc oxide and Octinoxate, the 2nd is a chemical sunscreen.
Is the EltaMD Intense Face and Body Moisturizer okay for pregnancy? The ingredients are Petrolatum, Paraffin.
Thank you! Your website has helped me so much in my pregnancy!
Safe for pregnancy and nursing if that’s the full ingredient list
