Clary safe is fine during pregnancy. You need such giant amounts to do anything that the medical community doesn’t say to avoid it.

They do, they use the amount they need to hit their goal SPF. But they also add in chemical sunscreens to improve shelf life. This discussion is relevant: Why did you say this product has sunscreen when there isn’t an SPF?

Hi there. Thank you so much for putting all of this information together. It is greatly appreciated. I have read information that octinoxate was something to avoid during nursing? That studies have seen it in breast milk? Just wondering your thoughts as there is so much information online and often hard to know what is fact. Thank you so much for your help
1 study found in that chemical sunscreens in very small amounts do reach the breast milk, but the issues we’re mostly worried about via exposure in pregnancy (development of hirschsprungs, bleeding that could threaten the pregnancy, etc) are no longer an issue. The reason to avoid chemical sunscreens under 12 months is due to skin irritation, not any other issues. I don’t know anyone in the medical community that currently recommends avoidance after delivery, though it’s easy enough to just keep using pregnancy safe products if it makes you worried. Hi! As far as sunscreen goes, is it a problem if it actually comes in contact with babies skin? Say off my arm when holding or feeding her..? Just a thought I had!
No, not a problem really. We don’t recommend sunscreen use under 6 months of age just due to how sensitive their skin is, they don’t tolerate it well and tend to get rashes easily. 6-12 months we recommend only physical sunscreens for this reason. If the baby gets a lot of sunscreen on her I would wash it off, but usually if it’s on your arm and she touches you it wouldn’t be enough for her to have a skin reaction.

Regarding sunscreen and nursing – I’m nursing now so I no longer have to worry about chemical sunscreens? I thought I had to stick to the mineral types. My all time favorite sunscreen is chemical so I’m very happy now. It’s from the brand Dermaceutic and has the following ingredients:

The active ingredients are Zinc oxide and Octinoxate, the 2nd is a chemical sunscreen.
Is the EltaMD Intense Face and Body Moisturizer okay for pregnancy? The ingredients are Petrolatum, Paraffin.

Thanks so much for all of this information. It is sooo helpful! One question I have is regarding Tocopherol, which I see in so many skincare products including Elta MD. Is Tocopherol the same as Tocopheryl Acetate? I read a blog that says you should avoid Tocopheryl Acetate as it is the same ingredient as Hydroquinone, which is unsafe during pregnancy. Any POV on this? Thanks!!
It is NOT the same as hydroquinone, it’s Vitamin E. There are rare cases of certain ways of processing vitamin E that can result in contamination with hydroquinone. And by rare, I mean there’s like 2 or 3 reports total out there, despite tocopheryl being one of the most common ingredients in products. I feel the sources saying this are highly misleading and I would seriously doubt other things they say.

Yeah, I would ignore that site. Tocopheryl has a couple of chemical salt names, but it’s Vitamin E.

Your version has salicylate and isn’t pregnancy safe. There are different versions for different regions of the world. They also just reformulated (and renamed) the entire line in the US. My list is AFTER the recent reformulation.

I’ve just reupdated the entire list. My opinion is what is in the list. The silicones all sit on the surface of the skin and as such are fine in pregnancy.

Yes, they’ve reformulated a bunch of their products in the last 6 months. I put the date of the last review of the entire brand in the post, I re-did this entire page at that time, after the reformulation.

I recently purchased the uv physical 41 elta sunblock and the texture changed. They said this was because they removed their PFAs.

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
