    Hi there!
I am 8 months pregnant and have looked into the face products I am using but after doing a quick google search to reassure myself all is good (paranoid mama), I noticed you indicate that the Biossence Squalane and Glycolic Facial is not safe. I had spoken with a few people prior to staying to use it and was told it was safe and also wasn’t aware the ingredients you’ve listed were not safe, I’m slightly panicking so would like more information! Thank you!

What about the use of clary oil? I noted this was an ingredient toward the bottom for the squalane + amino aloe gentle cleanser.

I would love to use this as my cleanser, but in reading up on clary it may induce labor?

Clary Sage is fine topically during pregnancy. You need to ingest extremely large amounts to have any effects (similar to rosemary) and physicians don’t advise avoiding in the diet which is a much bigger exposure than something in a skincare product. It isn’t accepted by the medical community as something you need to avoid topically.

        Hi There!

I had some questions about this product Squaline + Vitamin C rose oil. I recently read that essential oils should be avoided during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. Is Rosa Damascena Flower Oil in this product considered an essential oil? I know you mention this is pregnancy safe, just trying to understand more about that ingredient and your thoughts on it.

Similar question for the SQUALANE + LACTIC ACID RESURFACING NIGHT SERUM. You mention this is pregnancy safe but I was curious about the lavender oil and if that is considered an essential oil and if I should be worried about that?
        Thanks very much!

I haven’t changed anything, it was there before. The issue is whether the cell extract is stem cells or not (which is a soft call on my part, they’re likely not able to penetrate anything), the link is in the list still. But lately the Biossance stuff hasn’t really indicated they’re stem cells? It’s confusing sometimes brands label stem cells this way, but sometimes they’re not stem cells and it’s like a soup of cells and cell culture material and they do something with that.

    Hi Doctor,
Thank you so much for doing all this research! I’m bummed I’m only learning about this site now. I’m 5 months pregnant and trying to use the best products possible that are also safe. These lists have been very helpful so far and I love reading all your content. I’m commenting here because I am just about to order from Biossance. My question is in regard to the ingredient Phenoxyethanol. Which is in a TON of skincare and makeup formulations. These days it’s kinda hard to find products that it’s not listed as an ingredient. In doing my own research it’s usually only used at a 1% or less concentration. My concern is overexposure from repeated products. I’ve seen to avoid if pregnant, breastfeeding or using on a child under 3. I know you don’t have in your skincare ingredients list to avoid. Just was wondering your thought on this. Thank you!!

Hi!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this blog informing pregnant women what they should not use. After I read it, I changed my moisturizer, eye cream, tinted moisturizer, foundation, and concealer. Biossance released a new product called “Squalane + 10% Lactic Acid Resurfacing Night Serum” and I was wondering if it is safe to use during pregnancy. Again, Thank you so much!!!!!!

The ingredients of the new serum are:

“-Vegan Lactic Acid 10%: Gently smooths for immediate overnight results and glowing radiant skin in the morning.
-Clover: Works to reset the skin from daily stress, including pollution and blue light defense, and enhances skin’s renewal process for an improved complexion that looks fresh and well rested.
Squalane: Provides weightless hydration and locks in long-lasting moisture.

Water/Aqua/Eau, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Lactic Acid, Squalane, Glycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Cetearyl Olivate, Propanediol, Sorbitan Olivate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Lespedeza Capitata Leaf/Stem Extract, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Acacia Senegal Gum, Sodium Gluconate, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Linalool.”

    From their website:
“Is Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Because our Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum does not contain any retinol or retinoids, it does not have the same issues that cause women to have to stop using it. As with any skincare product, we recommend checking with your doctor before using while pregnant or breastfeeding.”

Thank you!

        • 6.7.21
          Christine said:

It isn’t considered Kojic Acid at least for pregnancy safety as long as it’s included in an extract. In large part that’s because things in an extract are typically at a much lower concentration. I think the real lightening effect with this product would be from the Vitamin C, which is fine in pregnancy and nursing.

Hi! I am curious about the Biossance Lactic Acid night serum. It’s one of my favorite products from them. Is the 10% Lactic acid too much for everyday use? I’m curious if being 10% means it needs to be used sparingly or if it even matters. Thanks so much!!

    • 3.18.21
      Christine said:

It’s doesn’t matter. There’s discussion on the % issue here: But what about this % of an ingredient?

But overall, % doesn’t matter. It’s either safe or it isn’t. Lactic acid is fine. I would say you might want to consider being careful with it, as a lot of people have more sensitive skin while pregnant, so I would just be mindful of that. If you’re used to it you’ll likely be fine.

Don’t pay a lot of attention to the “key ingredients” that get called out, you need to look at the ingredient list. You’ll see that the AHA is lactic acid (safe, it’s already in your body. I measure levels all the time at work.) And Glycolic Acid isn’t even listed. It’s in an extract, which is fine.
