Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Palmer’s

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Palmer's

Pregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Palmer’s as of 1/14/2022. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Don’t See Your Product? Read This Before You Ask About It…

Please read the Pregnancy Beauty Guide intro first, where you will learn which products you actually need to worry about (spoiler alert, you don’t need to worry about all makeup or hair products). I will not review products that fall into the “don’t worry about it” categories. If you want to ask about a specific product, I require that you follow these guidelines for asking about pregnancy/nursing safety. You can also learn more about how to use these pregnancy safety lists. I will delete questions that don’t follow the guidelines or are rude.

Do the palmers cocoa butter massage creams actually still contain salicylates? The two linked above I can’t find it listed on the ingredient list. (It is in older formulations, maybe they hid it and changed the name?)

I just reviewed the ingredients listed on the Palmer’s website on 7/19/2019, so it was very recent. I linked to the products on Walmart’s website as they had by far the best selection. You can check your product, but according to the Walmart and Palmer’s sites, both have Benzyl Salicylate in their lists. It shows up toward the end.

Hi! I would just like to clarify the difference between the “Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks” listed as safe for pregnancy and the “Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks Lotion: Salicylate” listed as not safe for pregnancy but safe for nursing. Upon clicking the product links, both show the exact same product but only in different sizes. Both have vitamin E also. I look forward to hearing from you as this product is what I’m currently using. Thank you!

So I had listed them separately because 1 listed salicylate in the ingredients, but the other didn’t have a listed ingredient list, I had to click on the image to look at the ingredients and it does NOT have a salicylate. I couldn’t get the image of the 1st to enlarge enough to read on the bottle if the ingredient list in the posting matched what was on the bottle or not. I thought it was odd too, but they appeared to be 2 slightly different products with the same name. Fun times!
today I can enlarge the salicylate image enough to read the ingredients on the bottle, and there is NO salicylate 🙂 It all makes more sense. Pregnancy safe!

EDTA isn’t considered something to avoid according to any of the physicians I’ve spoken to, though it shows up on “clean” bloggers lists (not sure sometimes where they pick ingredients up from?). This product looks pregnancy safe to me.

It very well may have. Part of the issue with Palmer’s is that a lot of their products have very similar names and I wonder if they reformulate fairly frequently? I feel like there’s a lot of issues like that.

Hi! I think there might be a mistake. Same product (Cocoa Butter Hand Cream) is listed twice, once in ‘Safe for pregnancy and nursing’ (item 6) and once in ‘Not safe’ for either. This product contains retinyl palmitate, as mentioned by you, so I guess it shouldn’t be also in the Safe category. Thank you for your work, it’s very helpful!!

Those are 2 different products. I don’t see a product listed under not safe named cocoa butter hand cream. There is a cocoa butter (heals softens) concentrated cream, but that is NOT the hand cream, and if you click the link it is not labelled as a hand cream. It’s a different cocoa butter cream.

Safety isn’t based on how long something will be on your skin, most soaps are formulated to leave a residue behind. I would avoid this in pregnancy due to the licorice root, but ok for nursing

    • 10.25.21
      Christine said:

      It’s fine.
The prop warnings in California don’t actually mean much, I used to live in Orange County and I swear they put them on everything. If an ingredient has any studies that remotely link it to cancer, then it gets the warning. Even if the study wasn’t well done or is shown only in a petri dish (often the case), usually at levels many times higher than could ever be achieved in a human. It isn’t something that physicians pay attention to, honestly.
Having said that, it isn’t worth losing sleep over a product that isn’t going to do much. Info here on preventing and treating stretch marks in pregnancy. Other products might have a little more benefit, but nothing is really going to work well. You can pretty much pick any pregnancy safe moisturizer.

It’s NOT another name for hydroquinone. It’s another name for Vitamin E. There are a few isolated instances in which hydroquinone is a contaminant in tocopherol, but it depends on both the source and how it is processed, and it’s very rare. I wouldn’t avoid Tocopheryl based on those very rare reports.

Hi Dr. Someone else had included this cream (palmers massage cream for stretch marks) in the above comments (which does not seem to have salicylate listed in its ingredients) and you said it was safe, but say its not safe in your list at the top. Has this product seen an updated ingredient list that would perhaps no longer contain salicylate, thereby making it safe for pregnancy now?

        • 11.29.23
          Christine said:

No, it’s because there are different versions around the world. I can see the IP addresses from my side of the comments, typically the US, EU and Asian versions have minor variations. Canada is sometimes the same as US or EU, but sometimes is a 4th version. It’s because someone was from a different region.

Avoid in pregnancy and nursing due to the retinoid. I also have no idea what “ceetesomate-e complex” is, as that’s something they’ve made up.
