Thanks for your post, I have found your blog very useful. I am so confused because the ‘Noni Bright Vitamin C Serum’ and the ‘Tumeric Brightening and Exfoliating Mask’ are advertised by Miranda Kerr on her YouTube channel as being in her pregnancy skincare regime, as well as on the KORA Organic Instagram page under a pregnancy skincare instagram story. I am unsure why they are allowed to promote products specifically for pregnancy that are actually unsafe? Is this not very misleading?

Hello! I love this website and what you do to help women navigate what is and isn’t safe to use while pregnant. I just wanted to follow up about the Kora Turmeric Exfoliating mask. You mentioned it isn’t safe while pregnant because it contains Salicylic Acid. I went over the ingredients a few times and it did not mention Salicylic anywhere. Could you explain how that ingredient is found that makes it unsafe? If it doesn’t have that in it I’d really like to use it. Thank you!
I think it might be in the process of being reformulated. Note, I haven’t updated this list since 2021 (I’m working my way through the alphabet always, it’s coming up soon), but the ingredient lists between the brand and Sephora are different. When items are updated, Sephora will change the URL of the page (they create a nearly identical page, they don’t just update it), and my links break. My sephora link isn’t broken yet, so I think the brand has updated, Sephora has not, and I would be very careful about checking your actual packaging to see if you have the old or new formula.
This is the ingredient list from Sephora, I’ve bolded the salicylic acid, which IS present there. It’s not on the Kora Organics list.

KORA NONI GLOW FACE OIL contains clove flower extract. But I’ve searched onine, some say clove should be avoided. What do you think of this?

If I was worried about that ingredient I would have screened it out. My list is conservative for the mainstream medical community, but you can find info out there to support avoiding pretty much everything possible, it’s a matter of what sources you feel are appropriate.

I read on KellyMom that we should avoid ginseng while BF as it can be harmful to baby. Should we avoid this eye cream since it has ginseng Extract in it?
You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. In particular, we don’t recommend avoidance of eating ginseng, which is a much bigger exposure than topical.

Thank you for all the knowledge that you share 🙂 I just wanted to clarify about the Kora Organics Turmeric Moisturizer — the comments, there are several replies saying it is ok to use while breastfeeding, but above that is listed that it is not suitable for either pregnancy or breastfeeding? I have been using it during breastfeeding, and now am not sure. Thank you so much for your help 🙂
I recently (within the last month) added the problem ingredient, Bidens Pilosa, to my list of ingredients to avoid in pregnancy and nursing as I found evidence in the literature that it hits the same receptors as retinoids. I don’t know that it is in all versions of the moisturizer, as I do think this moisturizer has been reformulated at least once (typically I can tell that’s happened as Sephora removes a product and then reintroduces it as new), you can likely see if your version has it by checking the packaging.
Retinoids themselves are semi-controversial during nursing, I mostly recommend avoiding them because so many other physicians have started doing so, I don’t know of any “bad” evidence in the literature to make this change, but it’s definitely becoming more widespread to recommend avoidance. I’m pretty conservative that way. I hope that helps!

Safe for pregnancy and nursing
You said that the TURMERIC BRIGHTENING & EXFOLIATING MASK (at Sephora) is not safe because it contains Salicylic Acid, but when I read the ingredients list on Sephora.com, it does not list Salicylic Acid. Is it called another name, or is that an error?
I think it’s been updated in the last 6 months actually. I last did this list about 2 years ago and it’s due for an update, I work through the alphabet as I have time (and I just keep going always, it’s never ending, like the painting of the Golden Gate bridge) and I’m somewhere in the I’s right now lol
