Pregnancy Safe Products from Monat

Pregnancy Safe Products from Monat

Pregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Monat as of 11/5/2020. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. If they release a new product that is not listed here, please comment below and I will add it. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Please refer to my post on pregnancy safe makeup, where I explain why you don’t need to worry about your mascara, powders, eyeliners, brow products, etc. I do not review these products.

Which hair products do you need to worry about?

Technically, none. Most OBs will tell you not to worry about any hair products. Your hair is a dead protein, and it can not absorb anything. It’s amazing how pregnancy brain can take over and we forget that simple fact!

Personally, I screened products that would sit on my scalp for a few minutes (aka- shampoos, scrubs, etc). My thought process was that those products would be similar to a face wash, even if washed off right away it sits there for a bit. So, on this list you’ll find products that sit on your scalp. This is shampoo, scalp treatments and root styling products. Other styling products should just be on the hair shaft, and if you’re worried about sprays being inhaled, I recommend holding your breath while you spray and then step away a few feet. Conditioner and treatment masques don’t usually touch your scalp, though I have screened a few masques that people sometimes apply up to their roots. If you apply any of these further from the scalp, they’re all safe (even if I screened them as not safe).

How to Request a Product Review

I try to review all of the products that I can when I publish a list. Note, I am in the US and I only have access to US products. Please don’t be rude if I skipped your favorite cleanser, when items are out of stock sometimes they aren’t on the brand’s site, or maybe you are in Asia and I am in the US.

I reserve the comments on each post for reviews of product from that brand, this makes it easier for others to find products later. Please only ask about Monat on this post, I will delete other product questions. You can find other brands here. If your brand is not included, please ask on the brand list post.

    Hi there,

Can you comment on the potential infertility Monat causes because of red clover traces in the products?

    • 2.13.21
      Christine said:

It’s actually known for pro-fertility benefits, but not to the point that even orally it’s considered effective by the medical community. Traces in a topical product (in this case for your hair, which can’t absorb anything) isn’t considered something you need to avoid.

      • 3.9.21
        Megan said:

Thank you. I have been reading glycolic acid is not of concern during pregnancy, but you recommend not using most of the skincare products because of glycolic acid. Can you explain a little further?

        • 3.10.21
          Christine said:

Glycolic acid isn’t universally accepted as safe by the medical community, it is highly absorbed (at least 28% in some studies) when used topically, and as it’s fairly small we think it goes systemic very easily. There’s no data specifically saying it is safe, and due to that many physicians say to avoid it.

I saw multiple “claims” of miscarriage and bleeding while using Monat hair products claiming to be due to the red clover. I’m really interested in trying their hair care but it made me nervous. May I know your thoughts? I value your opinion and refer to your page for every product I’ve used so far throughout my pregnancy. Thank you!

    • 3.4.21
      Christine said:

I don’t find those claims to be very credible. Hair can’t absorb anything, the amount of an ingredient (that hasn’t been strongly linked to issues in the past, it isn’t something we say to avoid) in shampoo is unlikely to have suddenly caused a rash of issues to this extent. Actual miscarriages are much more likely to be related to something like a genetic issue, which again, isn’t linked to shampoo. Unfortunately, I think this is a case of “true true unrelated”, and people are looking for something to blame for an unfortunate event.
If using the shampoo makes you nervous, then I would change to something else. It isn’t worth losing sleep over something like shampoo. But I’m not concerned about these reports.

        Patricia said:

Would it be bad since it goes into the pores of our scalp and skin? I had the same concern while pregnant and now I am breastfeeding.
Red clover is beneficial as a topical, if so, in what way?

        • 7.27.21
          Christine said:

Red clover isn’t proven definitely to be helpful or harmful either way as a topical. If it makes you worried I would just avoid it.
