No, it was left off of the list due to the chemical sunscreens
So I have a question about PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion marked above as safe. It contains methylparaben and propylparaben so is it still safe to use it during pregnancy? I’ve been using it during my 1st trimester because I found it to be safe, but later I’ve read that methylparaben and propylparaben are hazardous. So I’m confused and worry about my baby.

The medical community considers parabens safe. Please refer to my post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy for more information. If you are concerned you can avoid them, but I don’t screen products with parabens out of my pregnancy safe criteria.
Hi, your pregnancy safe list has the cerave skin reneweing eye cream in it, but on checking the ingredients it has butylene glycol and caprylyl glycol. I know you usually filter out products with glycolic as unsafe, so are these variations ok?
They’re far enough from Glycolic Acid that they’re fine.
I read your article just now and I am pregnant for 6w 4d. I just learned that the sunscreen is not safe for pregnancy. I will stop using it right away but what will happen with my baby’s development if I have used it already? Any sunscreen recommendation? Thanks.

I actually left those ones off due to the Pramoxine, I was waiting to hear from an OB friend about that ingredient. We can’t figure out if it is pregnancy safe or not, it’s a category C and the brand recommends talking to your OB. It is a somewhat unusual itch relief ingredient and not found in other topicals. I’d likely talk to your OB about an alternative.

I would talk to your doctor, it sounds like you have a folliculitis if it’s widespread. You may need antibiotics.

It’s fine, nothing to support avoidance. Many OBs recommend using it orally for constipation, so…. in a face cream is much lower exposure. More info on what to watch out for here:

Speaking about OB, last time my OB mentioned to avoid hyaluronic acid. I was confused because most of the pregnancy safe products I bought were containing it.
Is there any evidence or maybe she was confused with it and something else ?

Hyaluronic acid isn’t a real acid, it’s a very large molecule (already found in large amounts in your dermis) and is so big it often can’t penetrate down into your skin, and is felt to be safe. Info here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

No, many physicians don’t think so, there’s no evidence to support that. 2% is what you can buy over the counter without a prescription in the US. Discussion here: But what about this % of an ingredient?

Regarding the CeraVe am facial moisturizing lotion. It says because of chemical sunscreen, but isn’t the problem with pregnancy and chemical sunscreen the ingredient Oxybenzone or benzophenone-3? I don’t see that in the ingredient list for the CeraVe am? So why is it not safe?
All of them have issues, and they’re all well absorbed. Most of them also count as salicylates, and the links to hypospadias have also been found with others beyond the benzophenone-2. That’s why I (and many other physicians) recommend avoiding all of them.

Hi! Thank you for this resource, the website is very informative and thorough! One question I had was regarding a prop 65 warning that I saw when trying to purchase CeraVe daily Moisturizing lotion. It warns of chemicals that is known to California of causing birth defects and reproductive harm, but all the ingredients are on the approved list. I am feeling overwhelmed with trying to figure out what to use . Thank you for the help!
The prop 65 warning in California was something the voters decided to add. It’s pretty much added to everything in the state, when things end up on the “warning” list it’s done in a petri dish, at very high doses. I don’t know any physicians who recommend looking for the warning on items, it’s so broad that it’s actually somewhat useless.

Cerave Moisturizing Cream has phenoxyethanol in it which is definitely not safe for pregnancy but is on your pregnancy safe list.
You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Hi! I found on a lot of sources that salicylic acid should be avoided but no one mentions salicylates. Also, in the EU basically every soap or shower gel contains sodium salicylate or benzyl salicylate as a preservative. Isn’t that safe? And if not, why?
These things will be helpful. Note, the EU isn’t the end all be all in terms of product safety either during or without pregnancy.

Pregnancy safety is something that is based a lot on conjecture and assumptions. We don’t have actual science behind most of it, because you can’t do the actual needed studies. It’s unethical. And I would say that those products with sodium salicylate or benzyl salicylate as a preservative aren’t safe in pregnancy.

Hello, I find some online information saying the ingredient Phenoxyethanol is bad for pregnancy. Some of the creams like Cerave’s eye repair cream are listed as safe but they have this ingredient, so I wanted to confirm if the cream is ok to use? Thank you very much!
