The Environmental Working Group (EWG) Cosmetics Database lists Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser and cleansing cloths as having ingredients that are considered “level 7-high hazard” when it comes to developmental and reproductive toxicity (see links below). The ingredients are PROPYLPARABEN and BUTYLPARABEN. Can you please provide your take on this? I’ve been using these products daily for the last 6 months of my pregnancy and am now concerned of the potential effects they could have on my baby’s development. Thank you in advance!

I address parabens in the post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. They really are found naturally in things like blueberries, and studies don’t show definitive links to anything. The associations they thought were there were later disproven. All we can prove is that they are absorbed. You can avoid parabens more easily now than a few years ago, but you should know that the preservative that is usually used instead is prone to reactions and doesn’t have safety data.
The EWG isn’t a scientific group, they’re a lobbyist group. The scientific and medical community have major issues with them, they often take studies and come to very different conclusions than even the scientists that actually did the studies themselves. I don’t listen to anything they say truthfully.

I read that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate should be avoided and just saw it in my Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. I’ve also read in some places that Sodium Laureth Sulfate should be avoided as well (though elsewhere I see that LAURETH is okay but not LAURYL). What do you think of these ingredients?
It’s not something that I’m concerned about at all except that laureth tends to be harsher than lauryl, so sometimes people have difficulty with it if their skin is dry or sensitive.

Do you have an ingredient list for the Cetaphil? I can’t find that one.
Differin is a retinoid, so definitely do not use that while pregnant. Many recommend avoiding while nursing as well.
Clindamycin should be fine, but as it is a prescription I would discuss with your doctor, they may want to change things up due to pregnancy.

The face wash has licorice root and the lotion has a chemical sunscreen and salicylate in addition to the licorice root. So, both are ok for nursing but not pregnancy.

I noticed a lot of cetaphil’s products (and products in general) contain the ingredient SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE. There are articles online that say this ingredient isn’t safe for pregnancy so wanted to get your view on this ingredient. Thanks so much!
That ingredient is fine. It can be a bit harsh and drying to the skin, but there’s no concern for safety during pregnancy.

Wondering how you think the moisturizing cream is safe when it has dimethicone and propylene glycol, two things that we are told to avoid in pregnancy.

Cetaphil has much fewer ingredients than other brands, it is one of the reasons that many derms recommend it. Pregnancy is a “sensitizing” time, meaning it’s a time many people start to have reactions to topical ingredients that they are usually fine with. I’d discuss with an allergist.

I’m confused multiplier sites that have obgyn and other doctors say Cetaphil Pro Oil Removing Foam Wash. In all ingredients I’ve looked up not once is licorice root mentioned

The licorice root is the Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate.
It isn’t super clear cut what to avoid and what not to avoid. I’m on the more conservative side (meaning, I say to avoid more things than some other physicians), not everyone says to avoid licorice root. While this discussion talks about brands, it’s also relevant here: Why does X Brand say this product is safe but you don’t think it is safe? (or Vice Versa)

I feel like my eyes are going to fall out I’ve read so much, trying to find a non-tinted mineral face sunscreen that is safe for pregnancy. Any suggestions?? I’m going with UltaMD for tinted but every non tinted I find isn’t safe (salicylates usually). Help!

This looks ok for pregnancy and nursing. Just double check that there isn’t a separate “active ingredient” area. I’m about 99% sure the sunscreen ingredients are the titanium and zinc listed here, but those are usually pulled out (which is how the FDA mandates sunscreens be labelled in the US, so typically brands will do it worldwide. But not always.) I just want to make sure we’re not missing some sunscreens you need to avoid 🙂
