Pregnancy Safe Facial Sunscreens, BB and CC Creams

Pregnancy Safe Facial Sunscreens, BB and CC Creams

One of the major issues I’ve been having in discussing pregnancy safe skincare is sunscreen. I feel like I tell everyone that emails me that their sunscreen is not safe, and they need to find a pregnancy safe sunscreen, and I’m sorry but I don’t have one to recommend. All of the sunscreens I used when I was pregnant have been reformulated and I can no longer recommend them.

I try to not recommend any chemical sunscreens (if you’re not sure what those are, check out my sunscreen guide for more information) as those are actually absorbed by the skin, they’ve even been picked up in urine tests! While many of these ingredients are likely safe, due to ethical reasons it is highly unlikely that clinical trials will ever be completed to prove the safety of these ingredients.

The sunscreens included on this list are all physical sunscreens, with the active ingredient Zinc Oxide, and usually (but not always, check individual products to be sure) Titanium Dioxide as well. This means that all of these products are full spectrum UV coverage.

Note, I have not tried all of these products. Once I started finding products that were full spectrum and pregnancy safe, I decided I would just list every product that I found! I know this list will be helpful to many of my readers. If you have tried any of these products, let me know how you liked it in the comments below. There’s also a list of pregnancy safe body sunscreens.

Read this before commenting to ask about your product

If you would like to ask if something is pregnancy safe please provide the product name, an ingredient list and limit yourself to a 2 products. I have readers asking about 20 products sometimes, and as much as I want to help, I simply don’t have enough hours in the day to check so many products. When you comment, please search the comments for your product first (command F will let you search for the name with most browsers) in the comments, I have already answered safety for hundreds of products.

Don’t forget to check out the other articles in my Pregnancy and Nursing Skin Care Guide! Please only ask about facial sunscreens, BB and CC creams on this post, you can check other product types on these other posts. I have been getting makeup questions here for the products that are already in these posts. I will no longer answer questions about products on the wrong product type post, it spreads the information out and is a waste of everyone’s time.

I used Cerave AM lotion all throughout my pregnancy. Eek! What are the risks? Is there anything in particular I should be concerned about or just lesson learned for the next one?

And, now that I’m nursing (and no longer pregnanat)—any reason to switch to a different AM moisturizer or is the Cerave AM safe?

        Thank you so much!

This one looks fine to me!
I’ve got both of those brands on my list to do. I’m a bit worried about the Origins ingredients as they’re owned by Estee Lauder, and they make the ingredients hard to find. I did Clinique recently (also owned by EL) and had a reader point out that the ingredients I had looked at on the Sephora website were incomplete and in a bad way! I had to pull the entire list from the post. I’m hoping that origins is more accurate, but…. we’ll see!

Thank you for all of your lists of safe products. Throughout my pregnancy and nursing years, I have used yours lists for products. My skin is dry and I’m having trouble finding a good night cream in my 40s while nursing. I want to try the Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore because I’ve tried so many night creams on your list and have yet to purchase one that is a good fit for my dry skin. In addition, I figured I’d also pick us a safe moisturizer, but the Skinceuticals one you have listed here is for oily skin. My question is this: is the moisturizer Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30 (it is formulated for dry skin as well as others)safe?

Again, thank you so much for your time and service to us! You have truly been a blessing.

The Triple Lipid Restore is fine! My skin is getting drier too and I’ve been planning on writing more about dry skin, anti-aging in dry skin, etc. I just haven’t gotten there yet. Let me know if you like this one, it looks really good!

That sunscreen has chemical sunscreens, so I wouldn’t consider it to be a safe for pregnancy. I hope that helps!

I’m not recommending any of the Juice Beauty Stem Cellular products based upon the company’s description of apple stem cells penetrating down into the skin and proliferating. I don’t think they could really do that, I’ve talked to a few dermatologists about it and that doesn’t describe how apple stem cells would work in their minds at all, but with the brand saying those things I would not use any of the products with this line while pregnant.

The ingredients of the supergoop are ok, but note that you don’t need to worry about powders (more info in my pregnancy safe makeup post), but also you should know that in order to get SPF 45 you’ll need about 1/3 of that entire container on your face…. I would NOT rely on that product to get your SPF, but as a mid-day touchup it’s probably ok.

      The Farmacy product is fine.

    Hello,

I saw someone else post this with an incomplete ingredient list. It’s Neutrogena Sheer Zinc face sunscreen. Is this safe to use? The active ingredient is zinc oxide (21.6%) and these are the rest of the ingredients:

Water, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Octyldodecyl Citrate Crosspolymer, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Phenyl Trimethicone, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Glycerin, Ethyl Methicone,Cetyl Dimethicone, Silica, Colloidal Oatmeal, Tocopheryl Acetate, Chrysanthemum Parthenium (Feverfew) Flower/Leaf/Stem Juice, Glyceryl Behenate, Phenethyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetyl Dimethicone/Bis-Vinyldimethicone Crosspolymer, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Sodium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin

If it’s not safe would you mind pointing out which ingredient so I know for future reference? Thank you very much for this and ALL your lists!

    Hello!
I need to add my thanks for your website! And maybe a product update – I just bought the Korres yoghurt veil as you listed above and it contains a lot of nonsense including avobenzone. So, perhaps they reformulated. Just FYI for your list.

Hi, nice to see your helpful website, but I need your help too about the sunscreen i used. It’s from Think Baby spf 50.
    Is it safe for pregnancy?

    Here i put the ingredients:

Purified water (0), aloe barbadensis leaf juice extract (0), capric caprylic triglycerides (0), sorbitan stearate (coconut based) (1), methyl abietate (pine wood resin) (0), vegetable glycerin (0), cetyl dimethicone (0), hydrogenated castor oil (0), magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) (0), sunflower oil (0), jojoba oil (0), ascorbic acid (vitamin C) (0), tocopherols (vitamin E) (1), olive oil (0), raspberry seed oil (0), cranberry seed oil (0), hyaluronic acid (made from vegetable) (0), glucose oxidase & lactoperoxidate (0), papaya (0).

I’m afraid when I read magnesium sulfate, hyaluronic acid, cetyl dimethicone, capric caprylic triglycerides.

Because I never heard it before

I really need your help, is it really safe for pregnancy?
    Thank you so much

This one is fine. Magnesium sulfate is just a salt of magnesium, hyaluronic acid isn’t even an acid, it is a large molecule that can’t penetrate down into the skin (though your skin makes it also so it is found in the skin) and attracts and holds on to water, so it is a moisturizer. The Cetyl dimethicone is a silicone used to help it feel slippery and aid in application, the capric caprylic triglycerides is derived from coconut and glycerin and also moisturizes.

Hello! I feel like I search high and low for safe cosmetics. It can be discouraging. Thanks for your time. I’m from Canada and so I don’t have as easy as an access to American products. For pregnancy and nursing, what do you think about Burt’s bees BB cream :
And how do I know even if one ingredient here is not safe ?

It’s like a whole other language. I’ve tried to familiar myself with certain words to stay away from.but also get lost when it comes to natural and essential oil ingredients because there’s ones to avoid too. I find this a struggle and am happy to have your website as a resource.

    It says key ingredients:
Medical Ingredients (Light Shade): Titanium Dioxide 5.3% and Zinc Oxide 7.0% Medical Ingredients (Light/Medium Shade): Titanium Dioxide 4.7% and Zinc Oxide 7.0% Medical Ingredients (Medium Shade): Titanium Dioxide 4.7% and Zinc Oxide 7.0% Inactive Ingredients (All Shades): Water, Glycerin, Decyl Oleate, Isoamyl Cocoate, Isoamyl Laurate, Octyldodecanol, Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Alcohol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Stearic Acid, Morinda Citrifolia Fruit Extract, Beeswax, Jojoba Esters, Mica, Iron Oxides, Silica, Sorbitan Stearate, Stearyl Alochol, Behenyl Alcohol, Sodium Carboxymethyl C10-16 alkyl glucoside, lauryl glucoside, magnesium aluminum silicate, xanthan gum, citric acid, isostearic acid, lecithin, polyglyceryl-3 polyricinoleate, polyhydroxystearic acid, sodium phytate, trihydroxystearin, alumina, arachidyl alcohol, sorbic acid, alcohol denat., potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, fragrance, phenoxyethanol.

Thanks for catching that! Arbutin wasn’t on the list to avoid when I made this post (it’s pretty iffy being on there, but I added it because it is so close to hydroquinone, but isn’t the same). I just crossed it off of the list.

Hi there! I clicked on the link to purchase the Neutrogena Pure & Free sunscreen … the link actually takes you to the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Face product on Amazon, not the Pure & Free. I didn’t realize until I received the product in the mail. Is the Sensitive Skin Face ok to use or should I return for the Pure & Free? Thanks!

It’s the same product, it looks like they’ve updated the name/packaging, but the ingredient list is fine.

Note, I have comment moderation set up on all of my posts, given the popularity of my site I can get thousands (literally) of people a day leaving spam comments, so I have it locked down. I would never be able to find actual people’s comments and answer questions otherwise, that’s why it didn’t autopublish 🙂
