I’ve already reviewed the entire brand, the safe products are listed above. I’ll eventually fill in the stuff I left out (on purpose) in the categories below, but I haven’t gotten there yet.
Sounds like this one is a no go. I love it, too and since REN says all of their products are pregnancy safe I thought I’d do some additional research to see what people said.
Hi, Can you please tell me if the Rosa Centifolia Cleansing Gel and Rosa Centifolia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser are safe to use for pregnancy?

Good evening Doctor,
Thank you for what you do. I’m seven months pregnant with really bad malesma and was wondering if it is bad to use the Ren Youth Bio Serum during pregnancy.
As mentioned in the post, I need a full ingredient list to review your product as I’ve reviewed all of the ones I have access to. More info here: why I need an ingredient list to comment on product safety. Note, I do not follow links from readers, I need the actual list. Thanks!
Hi! This is a new product from REN:

Is this okay even tho it has rosemary extract in??
Yes. You are still allowed to eat rosemary, which is a much bigger exposure. Topical rosemary isn’t considered something to avoid by any physicians.

Hi again!
I was just noticing that many of the products on your list still contain “Phenoxyethanol.” You don’t find this dangerous to use while pregnant?
Thank you for taking your time to do this 🙂
No it’s fine. Please read my post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy.
Hi! Can you please tell me if the Flash Hydro boost instant plumping emulsion is safe to use for pregnancy?

I would avoid this during pregnancy due to the salicylate. Ok for nursing though.
Hello, but this product is in your safe for pregnancy product list. Is it a mistake?
It’s a difference in formulation between countries or a reformulation probably
why not the Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic??? I read this about willow bark..
“willow bark” and “salicylic acid” are not the same thing. Rather, when ingested, the body converts the salicilin contained in willow bark to salicylic acid, but this requires complex functions of the human digestive system that the skin does not do.3 Because they’re not the same, the benefits are different. Willow bark is not as strong of an active ingredient as salicylic acid, but it does retain aspirin-like qualities, specifically anti-inflammatory properties.
thanks
It’s specifically because of those aspirin like qualities that we say to avoid it. All salicylates are actually to be avoided (doesn’t your OB put in big letters on paperwork to NOT take aspirin?), Willow Bark has enough of that property that my OB specifically called it out. There’s more information in my post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy, but wow you seem very upset about my opinion. It’s just my opinion, as a physician. You can ask your physician.
Hi Doc Thank you so much for all the information. My OB has recommended me to take 1 aspirin at night time before bed everyday for future pregnancies after a stillbirth I had this year. I am just a little confused about aspirin and pregnancy now. Please could you shed some light? Many thanks.
This is best discussed with your OB as I’m a pediatrician not an OB. But this is all about a risk/benefit analysis we do before recommending anything to a patient. A daily aspirin is often felt to be lower risk than other blood thinners to prevent clots, preventing another miscarriage.
Dear Doctor, I just bought the VITA MINERAL cream from REN and it is said that it contains vitamin A (through the cynorrhodon). is it really safe?
thanks a lot
regards
They are referring to the Vitamin A in the rosehip oil, which is considered fine. There’s more discussion in my post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy.
What about the Ren Rose O12 moisture defence oil? The ingredients are:
Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Germ Oil, Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Macademia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Ximenia Americana Seed Oil, Parfum* (Fragrance), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Lipid, Oryzanol, Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Seed Oil, Safflower Oil/ Palm Oil Aminopropanediol Esters, Tocopherol, Cymbopogon Martini Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Rosa Damascena Flower Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Benzyl Benzoate, Citral, Citronellol, Eugenol, Geraniol, Linalool *100% Natural Fragrance – Parfum 100% Naturel
Looks good to me!

iam trying to get pregnant and just bought Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic and REN Bio Retinoid Oil anti wrinkel conctreated oil and REN Bio Retinoid Cream anti aging cream because susan yara used it while she was pregnant so i thought they were safe but after seeing your information i see that you say they are not safe? if i got it right. but when i google about the ingrediens you listed as not safe in these products : Willow Bark (Salicylate) and Bakuchiol i just cant find the explanation to why they are not safe. what should i use? i just bought the products and looked forward to use specially the ren Bio Retinoid Oil and bio retinoid cream because as susan yara said they are a retinol alternativ to use while your are pregnant. ?
skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Bauchiol is one that I’ve been treating as a retinoid as brands claim it has the same mechanism of action as a retinoid, but there’s no data supporting safety. As retinoids are the biggest ingredient to avoid because they have the strongest data linking them to birth defects, unless there is data supporting that they are in fact safe (which is unethical research to perform so we won’t get the needed data), I say to avoid them. I don’t think Susan Yara has any medical background, she’s just a “beauty expert.” I’m a pediatrician, we are specifically trained in looking at medications and products for nursing and pregnant moms.
Hi Doctor,

Hi, i wanna ask you why its evercalm overnight balm its not listed on the Ren official site on the section of pregnancy safe?
Thanks a lot!
It’s listed as pregnancy safe above, I’m not certain what you mean? I think I have it linked to Sephora as I found it there first.
Are the products that are listed as safe for pregnant women also safe for breastfeeding women?
Yes, pregnancy is much more restrictive
Thank you for the prompt response, can I use both products at a time? I am planning to use mask daily at night and cream in the morning daily.Sorry for too many questions.
You can
Hello! I just wanted to say THANK YOU for all this amazing information—it has really helped me be better informed and able to sleep better at night knowing that I am using safe products.
Quick question: prior to pregnancy I was using the REN AHA Renewal Serum to help with my KP on my arms—what other pregnancy safe products do you recommend for severe KP cases (I am very early pregnancy)? And, are hair products an area of worry during pregnancy?
Very grateful for this!
I don’t have any KP recs, likely just physical exfoliation with a loofah would be best. Hair products unless they touch the scalp a lot aren’t a concern.
Hi Dr. thanks so much for the work you’ve put into this website. I’m in awe and wish I had found it sooner. Have already shared with two preggos and I just found you tonight.

Is the Atlantic kemp anti-fatigue bath oil still safe to use even though it contains clary sage and rosemary leaf oil? I’ve read that these shouldn’t be used in pregnancy
Those are fine. There are websites out there that say almost everything should be avoided topically (and there is truth to the fact that extremely large amounts ingested aren’t good), but they aren’t things that the mainstream medical community things you need to avoid (I’m a pediatrician). This is what I screen out: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Great, thank you so much ☺️
Hello,
Thank you this website is great.

Is the new brightening dark circle cream safe for nursing mothers to use?

Hi! I’m curious if any ingredients have changed in the wake wonderful nighttime facial? The Dermstore page lists glycolic acid as one of the “key ingredients” of the product, but I didn’t see it in the ingredient list.
ithttps://www.dermstore.com/product_Wake+Wonderful+Night+Time+Facial_64358.htm
Aqua (Water), Sodium Lactate, Lactic Acid, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Oleyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Polyglyceryl-6 Distearate, Myristyl Myristate, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Germ Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Lauryl Laurate, Jojoba Esters, Oryzanol, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Seed Oil, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Seed Oil, Cellulose Gum, Cetyl Alcohol, Polyglyceryl-3 Beeswax, Mannitol, Faex (Yeast) Extract, Xanthan Gum, Behenyl Alcohol, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol, Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Passiflora Edulis Fruit Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract, Parfum* (Fragrance), Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Stearyl Alcohol, Alcohol Denat., Phenoxyethanol, Glycogen, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Protease, Subtilisin, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Citrus Aurantium Amara Flower Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Bisulfite, Limonene, Linalool.
It looks fine. Sometimes the key ingredients are calling out things in extracts or they’re just wrong, like someone copied and pasted them from another product but didn’t fix it.
Just curious why some products are listed as “not safe for pregnancy” because of Glycolic Acid and others considered safe? Is it the amount? Specifically curious about the Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask
listed here, and the Sephora Glow Peel Pads (for example). Thanks!
It’s dependent upon whether the ingredient is listed separately as a chemical ingredient, or they’re just calling it out in an extract. In an extract (like the Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask) doesn’t count, it’s felt to be slightly different in chemical structure and of a lower %. The Sephora Glow Peel Pads have glycolic acid added and listed in the ingredient list.
Hi Christine
I have a question on this. I wrote to the team at REN about the Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask to ask if there was any glycolic acid in the product (which it states in the ‘about the collection’ section of the page, but not in the ingredients list). They said that “Glycol Lactic includes Glycolic Acid – approx. 0.5% from Pineapple Extract”. When I asked why it wasn’t listed as an ingredient, they said “Unfortunately they are not able to list all the the ingredients present, only the high percentage and risk reaction ingredients are mentioned. ” I’m a bit confused by this because the full list of ingredients does appear to be on their website (for every product!)
From this response, do you still think this product is safe to use for fertility/pregnancy? Forgive me, because I don’t understand how ingredients are formulated or listed – I just want to be sure about it because this is one of the few products I use and love.
Thank you
Legally if they are adding the glycolic acid separately it MUST be listed in the ingredients, which is when you need to worry about it. If it is included as part of the pineapple, they do NOT need to list is separately. That’s also when you don’t need to worry about it.

Hello! Is the descriptions on their website and on Sephora, they both say Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask has glycolic acid. Even though I don’t see “glycolic acid” plainly listed in the ingredients – not sure if it goes by other nsmes. Do you list it in the safe category because the glycolic acid is from Pineapple Extract (according to Sephora website).
What to double check before I purchase. Thank you so much!
A previous version actually had it added in there, it wasn’t in the pineapple extract only. It’s ok for pregnancy and nursing now.

Hey, looking at the bio retinol range, you’ve listed Bidens Pilosa as the “unsafe” ingredient – is this just a precaution rather than a definitive? I can’t find anything to say that BP is harmful – do you know what it is that makes it unsafe, or is it listed as a precaution? Thanks in advance!
Bidens Pilosa and Bakuchiol actually work through the exact same mechanism as actual retinoids. Brands have been out there saying they’re safe but… they’re new and have no evidence themselves. But if they’re working through the same mechanism of action it’s a pretty safe bet to think they have the same issues as a retinoid.
Hi, thanks for providing all this valuable information. I didn’t see this in your guide, sorry if I missed it, but wondered why alcohols are considered safe by brands during pregnancy? Eg I can see Ren use Cetyl alcohol in their products, and most other brands use a type of alcohol. I’ve read fatty alcohols such as this are not drying but given all the focus on not ingesting alcohol during pregnancy it’s a bit frightening to see it on ingredient lists. Thanks in advance!
You’re using the chemistry term alcohol interchangeably with the lay person’s term alcohol. A chemical is called an alcohol if they have an OH group attached to them. They’re often very, very different and don’t absorb or interact the same way in our bodies, they aren’t associated with fetal alcohol syndrome, etc. There are many alcohols also found naturally in your body.
