    Hi Doctor,

I was thinking about purchasing the Coola Mineral Sun Silk Creme SPF 30. It is included in your picture collage (which usually corresponds to products that you list as pregnancy-safe), but it is listed under the “not safe for pregnancy, ok for nursing” category. Will you please clarify if it is safe for pregnancy?

    Thank you!

There are salicylates in the rest of the formulation which also need to be avoided during pregnancy. The Mineral Body Sunscreen is on the ok for nursing but not pregnancy list, I specifically call out each “problem” ingredient.

It’s confusing because the way in which brands label stem cells is not consistent. Some times it is cells and sometimes it’s just actual just of a stem or something.
For this product it is these ingredients: Rosa Alba Leaf Cell Extract, Rosa Centifolia Leaf Cell Extract, Rosa Damascena Leaf Cell Extract, Rosa Gallica Leaf Cell Extract
I look at what the brand is advertising for the product, and if it is confusing I email/call them. Sephora doesn’t say it on their site, but when you look at Coola’s site: https://coola.com/products/mineral-face-spf-30-rosilliance-tinted-organic-sunscreen-lotion#
Scroll down and you’ll see this under all start ingredients:
      BOUQUET OF ROSE STEM CELLS
      • Revive Commiphora and Rose from Damas gives skin it’s bounce back. • Purify Apothecary’s Rose promotes health and nutrition of skin cells. • Smooth Lightening White Rose provides protection against daily environmental aggressions. • HydraGeneration Pale Rose hydrates the skin.

HI! Thank you so much for providing this incredible research!!

I just bought Mineral Body Organic Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 b/c it was listed on many sites as being pregnancy safe, but you have it here listed as unsafe because of the Butyloctyl Salicylate. My confusion is that it’s listed as an inactive ingredient, just like, for example, in Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, which you have as one of your safe sunscreens. Could you explain the difference?

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

The active vs inactive ingredient term is misleading as that’s a term the FDA uses to differentiate ingredients that are treated as a drug. Ingredients that fall under “inactive ingredients” still do things and count toward pregnancy and nursing safety. My list is more conservative than a few others, but the salicylates are pretty universally something that should be avoided while pregnant. More here: pregnancy beauty FAQ

    Hello,
Just stumbled upon your website while doing research to edit things out of my skincare and body products before I start trying to get pregnant. The Coola Mineral Face Organic Matte Finish Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 you list on this page was one of my choices to replace my daily facial sunscreen. I also looked at the ingredient list myself and found an ingredient that sounded similar to salicylates. After some googling, I couldn’t find the answer. Could you help me figure out if ‘Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate’ is a salicylate?

The full list was redone just a few months ago, so be careful with comments before that date. Also keep in mind that my site is popular now worldwide, so sometimes the comments are from a different country and the ingredients don’t line up. As well, sometimes I don’t have products in my list because I build the list based upon brand sites. They don’t have those products on their site, or at Sephora here in the US, and I don’t trust other sources enough to base my list upon them. I’ll answer about safety, but I don’t add to the list based upon reader supplied ingredient lists.

Both of these are Safe for pregnancy and nursing

The classic organic sunscreen spray spf 50 is listed as unsafe for pregnancy…. I don’t see salicylate in their active ingredients and a lot of other articles recommend using that one. I also checked the chemical ingredients that are harmful for pregnancy and none of those are listed active ingredients either. Is it for sure unsafe? Thanks!

I know it is on you “safe” list and also I read the comments regarding the same product. But seems like I have a slight ingredient difference from the one you linked. This is the ingredients list I’ve got:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Zinc Oxide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Dimethicone, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Butylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Didecyldimonium Chloride, Glyceryl Caprylate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Jasminum Sambac (Jasmine) Leaf Cell Extract, Methylpropanediol, Niacinamide, Peg-7 Trimethylolpropane Coconut Ether, Polyisobutene, Polyquaternium-80, Propanediol, Schinus Molle Extract, Sorbitan Isostearate, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Extract

I wasn’t able to find that on the brand website and previously, and Sephora hadn’t said anything about stem cells. I was suspicious that it was either under reformulation or about to be discontinued. Do you have the full ingredient list? If it says stem cells you’re right, I wouldn’t use it while pregnant.

      • 5.13.22
        Danielle said:

I’m just looking at the ingredient list on Sephora too, which I agree is unclear:

Alumina, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethicone/Vinyl, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Hexyl Laurate, Iris Pallida Leaf Cell Extract, Isododecane, Lonicera Japonica Callus Extract, Mica, Nymphaea Alba Leaf Cell Extract, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Polysilicone-11, Silica, Stearic Acid, Titanium Dioxide, Trimethylsiloxysilicate.

However right on the front of the bottle it says “plant stem cells” 😀 I noticed because I happen to own this – I bought it in 2018 before I was ever pregnant, and I currently have the need to use it again for another formal event so I dug it out of my makeup stash and have been re-checking my products for safety since I’m still nursing. (So just to confirm, plant stem cells are ok for nursing?)

But in the list safe for pregnancy above, the sun silk cream, moisturizer and Rosillience tinted moisturizer seems to have cell extract in the ingredients based on the website that I clicked on the list. Maybe I am missing out something here? Will you please advice me on this? Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your reply, doctor. It is very confusing as you mentioned, as per the description as below(from the website), it is stated that there are Stem Cells in the Sun Silk Cream. Is that not the type of stem cell in the sense that we have in mind to better avoid?

Description of Sun Silk cream from the website:
The effortless everything. Our organic, oil-free formula provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection while our proprietary plant-derived BlueScreen™ Digital De-Stress™ technology helps mitigate the effects of HEV light (including blue light), IR, and pollution. This airy, antioxidant-rich formula also helps minimize free radical damage while plant stem cells and niacinamide helps promote radiant, youthful skin. Bonus: our transparent non-nano zinc oxide forms an airy-light veil that layers perfectly under makeup!
