Pregnancy Safe Products from Sun Bum

Pregnancy Safe Products from Sun BumPregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Sun Bum as of 2/25/2022. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Don’t See Your Product? Read This Before You Ask About It…

Please read the Pregnancy Beauty Guide intro first, where you will learn which products you actually need to worry about (spoiler alert, you don’t need to worry about all makeup or hair products). I will not review products that fall into the “don’t worry about it” categories. If you want to ask about a specific product, I require that you follow these guidelines for asking about pregnancy/nursing safety. You can also learn more about how to use these pregnancy safety lists. I will delete questions that don’t follow the guidelines or are rude.

That’s the original SPF 50 lotion that’s under ok for nursing but not pregnancy.
These are the chemical sunscreens: octocrylene, homosalate, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane
These are the salicylates: ethylhexyl salicylate, butyloctyl salicylate

Would their heat protectant spray be ok? I wasn’t sure if spray hair products were safe or not either in general because a lot of things say to avoid aerosols but this one is just a regular spray bottle.

It doesn’t go on your scalp, only your hair. Your hair can’t absorb anything, it’s dead protein. You only need to worry about hair products that are applied to your scalp.

Hi, thanks for the list it’s wonderful!!! What is your opinion about the product Sun bum blonde formula hair lightener in pregnancy?

    • 10.31.20
      Christine said:

You don’t need to worry about hair products that are just applied to the shaft of the hair, not near the roots. Your hair can’t absorb anything. I will say that these kind of sun in type products are really harsh on your hair and the results aren’t very predictable, so I would avoid it and just head to the salon for some highlights.

Different brand, but how about the John Frieda Go Blonder Controlled Lightening Spray? When I was little I had the lightest blonde hair, and now that I’m older and spend so much less time in the sun, it’s become fairly dishwater – ugh. The top of my hair is of course the worst, so I definitely would be spraying this close to my roots:

INGREDIENTS: WATER, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, POLYSORBATE 20, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, PHOSPHORIC ACID, FRAGRANCE, VP/VA COPOLYMER, POLYQUATERNIUM-47, POLYQUATERNIUM-55, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, EXT. VIOLET 2, VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE)JUICE EXTRACT, CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA(MATRICARIA) FLOWER EXTRACT, CITRUS MEDICA LIMONUM (LEMON) PEEL EXTRACT, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER)SEED EXTRACT, GLYCERIN, ALCOHOL, VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE) SEED EXTRACT, TOCOPHEROL, PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL.

Is the Sun Bum hair lightening spray okay to use on the root of the hair and scalp? Ingredients are: hydrogen peroxide, polysorbate-20, silicon quaternium-8, trisodium ethylenediamine discucinate, phosphoric acid, disodium phosphate, ext. violet 2. Are these ingredients okay to put directly on your scalp all day or even overnight if I don’t wash my hair til the next day?

It’s fine. I wouldn’t suggest it though, it’s not good for your hair to use lightening sprays.

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. Aloe Vera is not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
