Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Yves Saint Laurent

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Yves Saint Laurent

Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.

Here you’ll find every pregnancy safe skincare and makeup product from YSL as of 5/16/2019. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. If they release a new product that is not listed here, please comment below and I will add it. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Please refer to my post on pregnancy safe makeup, where I explain why you don’t need to worry about your mascara, powders, eyeliners, brow products, etc. I do not review these products.

How to Request a Product Review

I try to review all of the products that I can when I publish a list. Note, I am in the US and I only have access to US products. Please don’t be rude if I skipped your favorite cleanser, when items are out of stock sometimes they aren’t on the brand’s site, or maybe you are in Asia and I am in the US.

I reserve the comments on each post for reviews of product from that brand, this makes it easier for others to find products later. Please only ask about YSL on this post, I will delete other product questions. You can find other brands here. If your brand is not included, please ask on the brand list post.

YSL’s All Hours Foundation contains Octinoxate as its active ingredient. I thought that wasn’t safe for pregnancy. Thanks so much for all the work you do.

Unfortunately I’m at the mercy of online ingredient lists, which didn’t have that listed when I reviewed it (and actually the ingredient list no longer appears on Sephora or YSL’s site), but it now says that on the front of the bottle, which I don’t remember from before. I’ll move it down to safe for nursing only.

    Hello,

In one of your links under Foundations Safe for Pregnancy I noticed YSL Touche Éclat Cushion Foundation is listed as safe for pregnancy. However, on the other link for Foundations Safe for Pregnancy it is listed as not safe for pregnancy but ok for nursing.
Could you please clarify before I make the purchase? Thanks!

So, there are (or were) multiple versions with the same name. If you look at the products, they do NOT have the same ingredient list. The one on Nordstrom has no chemical sunscreen. They likely have changed something or they might actually sell a different version to Nordstrom, but the one on the YSL site has sunscreens. I put the lists together about 18 months apart, but that’s still the case. If you do decide to purchase I would look at the ingredients on your product, but currently the one on YSL’s site isn’t safe, but Nordstrom is fine.

I don’t know truthfully, I think it must serve some other purpose than exfoliating the lips, but I’m not a cosmetic chemist, just a physician 🙂

    Hello,

Thank you for such informative guides, we are seriously lacking here I’m the UK and you’ve provided a wealth of information and in turn reassurance.

Since discovering your site, I purchased the Touche ÉCLAT cushion compact. But, I’ve since noticed it’s listed in a separate article as not safe (chemical SPF) It does not list this and wondered if you had any further information?

Also the YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick doesn’t seem to contain the liquorice root or Salicylate in this formulation listed as unsafe in your guide and wondered if this was a new formulation or if they were listed under other names….

    Ingredients:
Octyldodecanol, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Stearyl/Ppg-3 Myristyl Ether Dimer Dilinoleate, Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Polyethylene, Cera Microcristallina (Microcrystalline Wax), Polybutene, Propylene Glycol Dibenzoate, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Titanium Dioxide, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Parfum (Fragrance), Caprylyl Glycol, Aqua (Water), Ammonium Glycyrrhizate, Mannitol , Polyurethane-15, Acacia Senegal Gum, Glyceryl Stearate, Lecithin, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Butylene Glycol, Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) Extract , Yeast (Faex) Extract , Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Citric Acid [+/- May Contain: Ci 77019 (Mica), Ci 77491 (Iron Oxide), Ci 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), Ci 15850 (Red 7), Ci 15850 (Red 6), Ci 45410 (Red 28 Lake), Ci 77492 (Iron Oxide), Silica, Ci 19140 (Yellow 5 Lake), Ci 42090 (Blue 1 Lake), Ci 17200 (Red 33 Lake), Ci 75470 (Carmine), Ci 12085 (Red 36), Ci 77499 (Iron Oxide), Ci 15985 (Yellow 6 Lake), Ci 77742 (Manganese Violet), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Ci 73360 (Red 30), Synthetic Fluorphlogopite.

I’m very confused and would appreciate any clarification. Thank you

The cushion compact is also listed here as having chemical sunscreen. Note YSL uses very similar names for many of their products, in particular their lip products. This is why you’ll need to click on the links to see the exact product I am discussing.
The formulation you mention above has the salicylate (it is the 2nd ingredient) as well as the licorice root (Ammonium Glycyrrhizate) and it also has a retinoid, making it unsafe for pregnancy.

Hi! Thanks for providing us the best possible information on pregnancy-safe skincare. Is YSL pure shots night reboot serum safe for pregnancy/nursing?
    Ingredients:
Aqua / Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Limnanthes Alba Seed Oil / Meadowfoam, Seed Oil, Isononyl Isononanoate, Glycolic Acid (3.4%), Propylene Glycol, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Glucose, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Cereus Grandiflorus Flower Extract / Cactus Flower Extract, Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract, Adenosine, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Hydrolyzed Linseed Extract, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Panthenol, Tocopherol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Salicylic Acid, Caramel, Limonene, Parfum / Fragrance.
Please note that the glycolic acid % in this serum is 3.4% (<10% glycolic acid is considered pregnancy-safe?) Thanks again!

    • 10.26.20
      Christine said:

There is no % glycolic that’s considered “safe”. There’s no studies regarding safety during pregnancy for most ingredients, and we can’t do those studies as they’re actually unethical. Glycolic acid isn’t universally accepted as safe by the medical community, it is highly absorbed (at least 28% in some studies) when used topically, and as it’s fairly small we think it goes systemic very easily.
Second, given we don’t know if things are actually safe or not, we also don’t have exact cut offs for when something is actually safe. I can’t do a study to say 9% glycolic acid is safe but 11% isn’t. That 10% number isn’t based on actual evidence. Along those same thoughts, would a higher percent be ok if you applied to only half of your face? What about if it is your body? Which trimester, but then what if you have your dates wrong? What if you have an eczema flare up and your skin is absorbing ingredients more easily? It kind of goes on and on.
Because of those reasons, if there’s enough reason to think an ingredient is unsafe, we recommend complete avoidance. There’s not really a gradient of this, it’s an all or nothing thing.

I recommend avoiding this while pregnant due to the glycolic acid and salicylic acid. Ok for nursing.
