    Hello,
I’d love to try Dr Barbara Sturm and see that you’ve categorized most of its products as safe. However, I just read that Purslane is rich in Vitamin A. I know Vitamin A should be avoided during pregnancy. What’s your insight on this?

Please refer to my post on pregnancy ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. Purslane has the exact same discussion as Rosehip Oil. Basically I think it is fine as do OBs I have talked to, but if you feel it makes you nervous then I would avoid it.

There are sometimes reformulations. I recently started the list from scratch (that’s always the date listed in the middle of the post). I don’t even look at the old list (since it could influence me). Instead I have a brand new list open and go through all of the products all over again. While I add new products or adjust things all the time if there are reformulations that I learn about, I do try to go through the brands every 12-24 months if I can, just to make sure I’ve caught any changes. I don’t remember what what the problem ingredient before with that product, but the most recent review it was ok.

Hello I believe the foaming cleanser and facial scrub are now safe. I read the active ingredients on the website and it looks like they removed the ones you have listed, is this correct? I reached out to them as well and they said both were safe to use when pregnant.

    • 9.25.21
      Christine said:

I’m in the US, which may alter things some. We likely have different ingredients than you have in Greece. In addition, you need to look at the full ingredients, not just the active ingredients on a product. In the US the brands can just call out whatever they want for that, but there are sometimes still ingredients to avoid in the full ingredients. The brand’s website does NOT feature the full ingredient list in the US.

The Cleanser is this (per Sephora), note Salicylic Acid is still present.
Water, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Lauryl Glucoside, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate, Panthenol, Urea, Lactobacillus/Portulaca Oleracea Ferment Extract, Citric Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Salicylic Acid, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Tocopherol, Pantolactone, Sodium Benzoate.

The Scrub is this (per Nordstrom), note the retinoid is Retinyl Palmitate, which is present.
Water (Aqua), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Octyldodecanol, Polyethylene, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Dicaprylyl Ether, Sorbitol, Glyceryl Stearate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Lactobacillus/Portulaca Oleracea Ferment Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Panthenol, Glycerin, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Shell Powder, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Butylene Glycol, Retinyl Palmitate, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract, Lecithin, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Pantolactone, Glyceryl Oleate, Hydrolyzed Silk, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Tocopherol, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben.

This discussion may be helpful for you:
Why does X Brand say this product is safe but you don’t think it is safe? (or Vice Versa)

Note, the retinoid is the #1 ingredient to avoid in pregnancy as it has the most evidence behind it for avoidance. Stating that ingredient would be ok for pregnancy is a big concern.

      • 3.7.22
        K said:

Thank you for your help on this. Maybe I am missing something but it looks like you are saying that the facial scrub is out due to retinol, but it still appears on the pregnancy safe list.

        • 3.8.22
          Christine said:

This is hard because the Dr Sturm website doesn’t list full ingredients, and I also think this product was in the middle of a reformulation (this reader thought the retinoid wasn’t in it, though my last review posted above is 4 months later). When I redid this list in January I used the BlueMercury list of ingredients, and I was surprised to see NO retinoid listed, I figured the reformulation must have taken place. Looking now, I see the retinoid on both the Nordstrom and BlueMercury lists. Sigh. Unfortunately, I’m somewhat at the mercy of the online ingredient lists (this is why I always say to check your actual product ingredient list), and things sometimes go back and forth. So, I’ve moved the scrub down.

These are the full ingredients in the US (where I’m located and all my lists are directed for): Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Talc, Cellulose, Maltodextrin, Water (Aqua), Xanthan Gum, Ascorbic Acid, Subtilisin, Lipase.

Your list is definitely different, which isn’t surprising given your location. Yours is fine for nursing, but not pregnancy.

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
As always, if I was worried about an ingredient, it would be included in the list and screened out. Those are both fine.
