Pregnancy Safe Skincare from The Inkey List

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from The Inkey List

Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.

How to Request a Product Review

I try to review all of the products that I can when I publish a list. Note, I am in the US and I only have access to US products. Please don’t be rude if I skipped your favorite cleanser, when items are out of stock sometimes they aren’t on the brand’s site, or maybe you are in Asia and I am in the US.

I reserve the comments on each post for reviews of product from that brand, this makes it easier for others to find products later. Please only ask about The Inkey List on this post, I will delete other product questions. You can find other brands here. If your brand is not included, please ask on the brand list post.

Pregnancy Safe Products from The Inkey List

15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum
Alpha Hydroxy Acid Serum: Note as the acids are included in extracts they’re “safe”
Caffeine Eye Cream (I want to say that this eye cream is amazing for undereye circles. It’s my new favorite! I buy it in multiples now.)
Ceramide Hydrating Night Treatment
Collagen Serum
Hepta-Peptide Serum
Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Kaolin Mask
Lactic Acid Serum
Niacinamide Oil Control Serum
Oat Cleansing Balm
Oil and Water Double Cleanser
Peptide Moisturizer
Polyglutamic Acid
Q10 Serum
Rosehip Oil
Snow Mushroom Hydrating Gel Moisturizer
Squalane Oil
Tranexamic Acid Hyperpigmentation Treatment
Turmeric Moisturizer
Vitamin B, C, and E Moisturizer
Vitamin C Cream

Not Safe for Pregnancy, Ok for Nursing

Apple Cider Vinegar Peel: Glycolic Acid, Willow Bark
Beta Hydroxy Acid: Salicylic Acid
Glycolic Acid Toner: Glycolic Acid
Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) Gentle Exfoliating Toner: Gluconolactone
Salicylic Acid Acne + Pore Cleanser: Salicylic Acid

Not Safe for Pregnancy or Nursing

Note I’m including products with retinoids here, as those are a bit iffy. It depends on how conservative you want to be while nursing (still absolutely contraindicated while pregnant). Refer to my post on ingredients to avoid while nursing for more discussion.

Alpha Arbutin Brightening Serum: Arbutin
Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Moisturizer: Bakuchiol, which I screen as a retinoid. Most brands claim it “acts the same as a retinoid” but I can’t find any safety info. To be on the safe side, I treat it as a regular retinoid.
Brighten-i Eye Cream: Diglucosyl Gallic Acid is a lightener that acts through similar actions as hydroquinone and similar ingredients
Hemp Moisturizer: There isn’t info out there on the safety of Cannabis used topically during pregnancy or nursing. We do know smoking marijuana with THC has bad effects and should be avoided, though it hasn’t been fully decided if it is just the THC or something else as well. Note Hemp does not have THC in it, it’s breed out of the plant basically. But there are still the unknowns we haven’t decided about. I would not recommend using Hemp or Cannabis products while nursing or pregnant for that reason.
Multi-Biotic Moisturizer: Diglucosyl Gallic Acid is a lightener that acts through similar actions as hydroquinone and similar ingredients
Retinol Eye Cream: Retinoid
Retinol Serum: Retinoid

Hi. Why did you mark glycolic acid from inkey as unsafe? My dermatologist has listed glycolic acid as safe to use during pregnancy.

Glycolic Acid is NOT universally accepted as safe by the medical community. It is absorbed at least 28% when applied to the skin and we have no real safety data. More about this here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Unfortunately there are brands out there stating that it “works just like a retinoid” and we have no actual safety data. Just people saying “it works like a retinoid, but is safe”, but no reasoning to back them up and no further explanation of mechanisms. Until more info is out I recommend avoiding it and I’ve been screening Bakuchiol out like a retinoid, which is the #1 ingredient to avoid during pregnancy.

Hi! Thank you so so much for this website and this list of products. I have terrible melasma and only want to use products that are safe while nursing! I ordered the tranexamic acid and vitamin c and Egf brightening serum along with the ordinary’s azelaic acid suspension cream in hopes these will help! I already use the ordinary’s hyaluronic acid+b5 serum morning and night. To make sure I’m using these correctly is there an order I should be applying all of these products in? I of course use mineral sunscreen during the day as well.

It’s something I mention occasionally re: my concerns, but they haven’t reached the level that I’ve added the ingredient to my list of things to avoid. My list is very conservative, and includes more ingredients than most physicians say to avoid. Currently I’m not screening it out, but I’m watching for more information closely
