Oh ok darn I’ve been using it basically my whole pregnancy. should I be worried? I use mineral sunscreen for my body but never thought that a hair product would contain chemical sunscreen!
I think unless you’re basically washing your hair in it, the exposure is super little. I wouldn’t worry about it.
But, 2 discussions that are helpful:
• You’ve been using a product with a “bad” ingredient
• Why did you say this product has sunscreen when there isn’t an SPF?

My hairdresser advises I use directly on/around the root to gift volume there so just wanted to know if there were any harmful ingredients
It has a chemical sunscreen and is ok for nursing but not pregnancy.

Please read above about which hair products you need to worry about. Conditioner isn’t meant to be used on your scalp, so you don’t need to worry about it, and since I already screen hundreds of products a week, I didn’t look at them.
This one has gluconolactone, and is not pregnancy safe. Except you don’t need to worry if it’s not on your scalp.
I just checked the Oribe website, and noticed that the Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo contains Salicylic acid, and the Gold Lust Transformative Masque contains Gluconolactone. Are these actually not Pregnancy safe?
Sigh. I made this listed based upon the ingredient lists on Sephora, as Oribe didn’t list anything on their site at the time. And that shampoo actually didn’t have salicylic acid when I made it (I know for sure, as it was the one I was using at the time and the ingredient list matched my bottle in my shower). They may have had a reformulation as those ingredients are now listed. I’m sorry, they are ok for nursing but not pregnancy

Safe for pregnancy and nursing
It’s ok to be extra careful, but keep in mind that there’s a point at which it’s ok to let it go and not worry about it (this is me giving you permission to do that) 🙂 It’s actually part of the reason that I don’t usually review products that you don’t need to worry about (that and I’m often overwhelmed with product reviews of products that should be screened). Pregnancy hormones are really great at taking over and causing worry about everything, to the point that the anxiety just takes everything over.
Thank you for this! If it hadn’t been such a struggle to get here I think I’d be less worried but I’m hoping as things progress and with a little more time I can relax. I can’t thank you enough. ❤️
Ok, good! I worry that people are consumed with worry and anxiety about these things, and I would say something if I was your baby’s doctor in the newborn nursery (I do that a lot, I love being in the nursery), so I should speak up here 🙂

Hi there. Thank you so much for everything you do. I see you have the super shine moisturizing creme as not safe for pregnancy or nursing because of retinoid and chemical sunscreen. I am breastfeeding and my hair stylist used the creme during a haircut earlier this week, which has me nervous. A few questions:
1. I know generally you say if a product isn’t a scalp treatment it is probably okay. Is this still likely ok in this case? Or since it’s a retinoid is it definitely a problem even on the shaft?
2. Would you recommend dumping the milk I’ve pumped since the product was used? I pump since I’m at work- baby has already had one day of milk since the product was used, but I could dump the rest.
3. How long does it take a retinoid to clear the system? I just washed my hair- how soon can I feel safe about the product being cleared?
4. Could you identify for me which product is the retinoid so I know? Here’s the ingredient list.

If it was just used along the hair shaft, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve started to add all hair products to the lists because even if I don’t think it’s a product to worry about (who applies hair spray directly to their scalp? What??) there’s always someone who applies directly to their scalp, or insists that their hair can absorb things differently (really?), and sometimes they can be rude and mean about it. So now everything goes in the list just so I can avoid being yelled at.
I would only worry about something that’s applied very close to the root of your hair, and when it’s not yet dried could be smeared onto your scalp and therefore maybe absorbed. Down the hair shaft will barely touch you and isn’t worth the worry truthfully.
Otherwise:
– no, don’t pump and dump. These are chronic exposure things, and we don’t have evidence for retinoids in nursing at all, it’s a conservative recommendation that’s been made more and more in the last 5 years or so. We don’t know how long it would take to “clear your system”, we can’t measure levels and we don’t know what a safe level would be, etc.
