I would avoid during pregnancy due to the licorice root, but it is ok for nursing.
what is with licorice root.. i have searched everywhere after your suggestion…

There’s more information in my post on skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. It is thought to act via some of the same mechanisms as other skin lighteners such as hydroquinone. Most of the ingredients we say to avoid are more theoretical reasons to avoid rather than hard evidence that they are unsafe. I added licorice root to the list because an increasing number of my OB friends were concerned about this ingredient during pregnancy. As I call out the ingredient of concern for every product, if you’re ok with Licorice root it is very easy for you to still use those products.

What I stated in that post is that I don’t know how HA keeps ending up on people’s “to avoid” lists, as it is a very large molecule that is already made in large quantities in your body, so not only is it already already there but it is so large that it has a very difficult time moving throughout the body. It is absolutely safe in pregnancy and is not an ingredient I screen out for my site.
Hi! I just bought CosRx Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Power Essence which is listed as pregnancy safe here, but saw that it has snail secretion filtrate. I’m not sure if it’s a new formulation. Should I still use it?

In particular that’s an ingredient that we don’t know much about in terms of what is in it, and it can vary a lot more than similar ingredients (like bee venom, that’s much more uniform). The discussion is in here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Do you have any scientific or medical ground for saying snail secretion filtrate is harmful during pregnancy and nursing? I’ve asked to COSRX about the safety of snail secretion, and they answered it is safe to use it during pregnancy and nursing. They also have confirmed that there is no glycolic acid in snail secretion filtrate

Basically it boils down to we don’t know for sure what is in there fully and it has no safety data. That’s all, so I call it out as something to watch out for but it’s really up to you if you feel ok using it or not.

This is ok for pregnancy and nursing
Hello there, First, just wanted to say Thank You for all your hard work that you do for us! And wanted to double check with you about COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid that contains 4% natural BHA component of Betaine Salicylate which is (according google info) twice as gentle as salicylic acid, i.e. a 4% betaine salicylate product is similar to a 2% salicylic acid one. And they say that products with 2% and lower are safe to use during pregnancy. Just wanted to know your thoughts about this. I am 37 weeks pregnant never used this before.

First, there’s no studies regarding safety during pregnancy for most ingredients, and we can’t do those studies as they’re actually unethical.
Second, given we don’t know if things are actually safe or not, we also don’t have exact cut offs for when something is actually safe. I can’t do a study to say 1% salicylic acid is safe but 4% isn’t. A “natural” version like you’re talking about is chemically the same regardless of where you have sourced it.
Along those same thoughts, would a higher percent be ok if you applied to only half of your face? What about if it is your body? Which trimester, but then what if you have your dates wrong? What if you have an eczema flare up and your skin is absorbing ingredients more easily? It kind of goes on and on. We can’t study any of this.
Because of those reasons, if there’s enough reason to think an ingredient is unsafe, we recommend complete avoidance. There’s not really a gradient of this, it’s an all or nothing thing. If you’re comfortable with it that’s fine, it’s your body and your choice, but I won’t recommend it as safe on my site.

Hi Doctor, just some confusion. The betaine in the ingredients of the pregnancy safe products including the galactomyces toners is a salicylate. Does this mean it is unsafe? The product contains a warning about not using it if you have an aspirin allergy (despite absence of word salicylate after betaine in ingredient list).
It isn’t closely related enough to be considered one of the ones to avoid in pregnancy, it needs to undergo too many transformations to be of a concern

I have some new products from Cosrx and my question is regarding snail mucin. I see you have some products listed as “safe for nursing/not safe for pregnancy” due to snail secretion and salicylate, but under “not safe for pregnancy or nursing” you have other products with snail secretion and salicylate. I feel confused by this and am wondering if the snail mucin essence I have is safe while I am breastfeeding. Thank you
I think that’s honestly a formatting error. When putting these lists together on my view I do it in html, that makes it easier to put everything in for the link to go to the correct location. But it gets busy looking and sometimes things are in the wrong spot. Both should be fine for nursing, but not pregnancy. I fixed it now.

Hi! I am just trying to understand… I thought a chemical sunscreen is safe as long as it doesn’t contain “oxybenzone” which Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF50 PA+++ doesn’t have. Why is still not safe?

Oxybenzone is just the one with the most evidence against it (it was recently linked to Hirschsprung’s Disease), but I recommended avoiding all chemical sunscreens before that. I would avoid in pregnancy due to the salicylic acid and salicylate, it’s ok for nursing.
All over the counter products are under 2%, which is the most that can be sold without a prescription. Which is key to know, because brands want you to think it’s safe (so you’ll buy it), but we don’t have information to support that. Discussion in this post: But what about this % of an ingredient?

Doing my research – currently nursing, but ordered COSRX aha bha C-vitamin and bha toner…
It’s because they name them that but they’re counting ingredients found within extracts/oil, which don’t matter for pregnancy safety. The AHA/BHAs do need to be avoided, but they only count if listed separately as chemicals.
