They both have salicylate. Ok for nursing but not pregnancy. Please read above about which hair products you need to actually worry about, because the mask is probably fine since it shouldn’t be applied at the roots anyways.

The tonic has salicylate, which needs to be avoided in pregnancy. But the tonic is the one you spray all over and the volumizing spray (which is fine) goes at the roots, so I think you’re fine to keep using them.

I just purchased the Aveda Nutriplenish light moisture and the matching conditioner only to realize that it contains Benzyl salicylate (ingredients below). From what I’ve read on your (extremely helpful!) site, if I’m just using it on my ends, it’s okay, right?

Hello! I am bit confused about the safety lines for shampoos and condicioner….I believe I read in your blog that we should not worry about the during pregnancy, but now looking at the Avena safe products list I see a few Not Safe shampoos…could you please clarify? I ask because the shampoo and conditioner I am using has Benzyl Salicylate….
Also the Avena volume tonic that you mention in your last email, is it safe for pregnancy?
    Thanks again!

      15mins said:

Technically, none. Most OBs will tell you not to worry about any hair products. Your hair is a dead protein, and it can not absorb anything. It’s amazing how pregnancy brain can take over and we forget that simple fact!

Personally, I screened products that would sit on my scalp for a few minutes (aka- shampoos, scrubs, etc). My thought process was that those products would be similar to a face wash, even if washed off right away it sits there for a bit. So, on this list you’ll find products that sit on your scalp. This is shampoo, scalp treatments and root styling products. Other styling products should just be on the hair shaft, and if you’re worried about sprays being inhaled, I recommend holding your breath while you spray and then step away a few feet.

The volume tonic only goes on the hair, not the scalp, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Can you clarify your thoughts on safety of Benzoic Acid, which is an ingredient in the aveda rosemary purifying shampoo? It’s not thought to be closely related enough to benzoyl peroxide that we worry about it. The issue isn’t really the benzoyl peroxide breaking down, it’s the free radicals they create is my understanding from discussions with other physicians.

Be sure to read the section above about which products to worry about, unless you’re applying them directly to your scalp (which these products really shouldn’t be) then you don’t need to worry about them.

    • 4.25.22
      Christine said:

That’s interesting you feel that way. Rosemary is one of those ingredients that we (meaning the medical community, I’m a pediatrician) don’t feel need to be avoided in pregnancy. The evidence supporting your statement is in animals, with extremely large amounts of rosemary. It’s not even recommended that you avoid eating rosemary during pregnancy, which is a MUCH larger level of exposure than topical rosemary. There’s no evidence to support avoidance of topical rosemary. Remember that your skin is a barrier and keeps most things out.

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. Rosemary is not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community (we don’t recommend avoiding eating it, and that’s a lot more exposure than shampoo). My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Just a question, for the Botanical repair strengthening overnight serum, you stated above it has Salicylate, however it is to be used on the ends of hair. Since its being used on the ends of hair, do you think it safe to use during pregnancy? I understand that you list it above as not pregnancy safe but ok for nursing based on the Salicylate in general.

Honestly, it should be fine. There’s a link up in the post about which hair products you really need to worry about. For a long time I wouldn’t have even screened products like this, but I would get frequent (and truly, very rude) comments/emails from readers insisting that I had to screen these products, because of whatever reason. I now just screen and write down all hair products to avoid these interactions because they would make me so upset. (I’m not sure why people think their hair is so different physiologically than everyone else. It’s dead protein still, their hair can’t absorb it… but… whatever.) As long as you’re not applying a product to the scalp or very close to the root, you don’t need to screen the ingredients at all.
