Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Versed

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Versed

Pregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Versed as of 4/3/2022. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Don’t See Your Product? Read This Before You Ask About It…

Please read the Pregnancy Beauty Guide intro first, where you will learn which products you actually need to worry about (spoiler alert, you don’t need to worry about all makeup or hair products). I will not review products that fall into the “don’t worry about it” categories. If you want to ask about a specific product, I require that you follow these guidelines for asking about pregnancy/nursing safety. You can also learn more about how to use these pregnancy safety lists. I will delete questions that don’t follow the guidelines or are rude.

The day dissolve is a cleansing balm, why is it under not safe as a chemical sunscreen?

      • 3.16.22
        Christine said:

There are now different ingredient lists on the Versed and Target sites (I suspect a reformulation is taking place and Versed updated before Target)

        The Target ingredients:
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Peg-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Polyethylene, Tocopheryl Acetate, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Leaf Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Caprylyl Glycol, Eugenol, Limonene

The Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane is Avobenzone, a chemical sunscreen. This happens a LOT with products that aren’t sunscreens, and it happens with products that advertise as a mineral sunscreen. Explanation is here: Why did you say this product has sunscreen when there isn’t an SPF?

        Hello,

Day Dissolve, the cleansing balm, is under your unsafe list due to chemical sunscreen. But, it’s not a chemical sunscreen. Versed also says Day Dissolve is pregnancy safe. I think you might have unintentionally put that product there by mistake.

        • 6.22.21
          Christine said:

I believe there may have recently been a reformulation, as the Versed and Target ingredient lists are different. Per Target’s site this is the ingredient list:
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Peg-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Polyethylene, Tocopheryl Acetate, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Leaf Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Caprylyl Glycol, Eugenol, Limonene

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane IS a chemical sunscreen and should be avoided in pregnancy. I very intentionally put that product in that section. The version on the Versed side is pregnancy safe and doesn’t contain that ingredient, but as the versions on Target and Versed’s sites are currently different I would be very careful about what I was using.

          These discussions are also relevant:
          • Why does X Brand say this product is safe but you don’t think it is safe? (or Vice Versa)
          • Why did you say this product has sunscreen when there isn’t an SPF?

Hi Doc, Just double checked the ingredient list for the Day Dissolve Cleansing Balm from Target and I think it’s been updated to below:
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Polyglyceryl-6 Dicaprate, Synthetic Wax, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Leaf Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Eugenol, Limonene

Since the ingredients list does not include Butyl Methoxydibenzoymethane, should this product be okay to use for pregnancy?

            Thank you!

            Christine said:

I would just make sure you’re getting the new version. My list reflects the updated version (from the Versed site) and Target took a long time to update/follow up with the new version.

I’m looking at the Weekend Glow Toner and it says both Kojic Acid and Glycolic Acid – but if I search those items both come up as safe for breastfeeding/unlikely to be absorbed into the skin/pass into the milk. Any clarification/links would be helpful – thanks so much for doing all this research to help us stay beautiful and keep our babies safe and thriving! <3

Glycolic acid is actually 28% absorbed in studies and a lot of physicians (including myself) advise avoid in pregnancy. Kojic acid is the same as hydroquinone, it works via the same mechanism and is more highly absorbed AND we do do think that’s in the milk.
