Full Spectrum Pregnancy Safe Sunscreens

One of the hardest to find products in pregnancy safe skincare is sunscreen. Today I’m sharing the results of an exhaustive search for pregnancy safe sunscreens.

All of these sunscreens are physical sunscreens, with Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide. If your sunscreen as anything else listed under “Active Ingredients” then I would not use it.

Learn more about full spectrum UV coverage here, pregnancy safe facial sunscreens are here.

Note, I have not tried all of these products. Once I started finding products that were full spectrum and pregnancy safe, I decided I would just list every product that I found! I know this list will be helpful to many of my readers. If you have tried any of these products, let me know how you liked it in the comments below. There’s also a list of pregnancy safe facial sunscreens.

You can find many more pregnancy safe sunscreens listed in my big list of pregnancy safe skincare products. Please look there for your brand before commenting.

Read this before commenting to ask about your product

If you have questions about pregnancy safety in skincare or makeup, please follow these guidelines. I have answered thousands of questions, and checking in the right spot means you are more likely to find your answer immediately.

Ask in the right spot

The entire Pregnancy and Nursing Skin Care Guide has links to the posts, this is a good place to start if you are confused. If you have a question about ingredients to avoid while pregnant or nursing, please ask on those posts. If you have a question regarding a specific product, please start on the big list of pregnancy safe beauty brands where you'll find brand specific pages (these posts include makeup). If your brand is not included, feel free to ask on the page itself.

Please provide information

Please understand that I only have so many hours a day, many products have similar names and ingredients may vary by country. Please provide an ingredient list if you are asking about product safety. I will not answer you unless you provide an ingredient list.

Please try to limit yourself to a few products.

Please be respectful

I live in the US and have screened products available here, mostly through the brands websites. I have been treated very poorly by some international readers who seem to think I have skipped their favorite cleanser just to spite them. Sorry, I didn't know that cleanser existed! Please be kind and thoughtful.

This has salicylic acid and licorice root in it which you should avoid during pregnancy. The sunscreen ingredients also aren’t listed, but those may also be unsafe. I’d look for a vitamin C serum, check the big list of pregnancy safe products, I’m pretty sure there are options from Paula’s Choice, Murad and Dermalogica?

#1, 3, 4 have chemical sunscreens, #1 and 3 both have salicylates otherwise. So, lots of reasons for all of those to be avoided during pregnancy, but they’re all ok for nursing.
#2 looks pregnancy safe to me! Winner! LOL

Hello! I was searching for information about sunscreens by ISDIN as they are sold in pharmacies here, but I have only found this comment. I fear that I may have purchased and been using something that may not be suitable for pregnancy. If so, that is quite deceptive due to where I purchased it and the website stating “Daily photoprotection for all skin types. Suitable for the whole family.”

        https://www.isdin.com/en/product/fotoprotector-isdin/gel-cream-spf-50-spf-30-eng

Aqua (Water), Alcohol Denat., Octocrylene, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Dibutyl Adipate, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Cyclopentasiloxane, Tromethamine, Cyclohexasiloxane, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol [Nano], Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Polyacrylamide, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Phenoxyethanol, C13-14 Isoparaffinn, Carbomer, Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Parfum (Fragrance), Decyl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Disodium EDTA, Retinyl Palmitate, Laureth-7, BHT, Linalool, Propylene Glycol, CI 77491 (Iron Oxides), CI 77499 (Iron Oxides), Tocopherol, CI 77492 (Iron Oxides).

If it does contain chemical sunscreens, can you tell me which ingredient in the above is the chemical sunscreen so I will be able to know what to look for in the future? I know you must be busy…thank you for your kind assistance.

Huh…. Ok, I have to admit I find the whole “uv filters” thing a bit odd. There are some other ingredients that the FDA hasn’t recognized as actual sunscreens yet, but do have some of that benefit (Mango is one of them actually). As long as there aren’t other ingredients that we’re missing! That’s my main concern.

Ok, this looks like someone listed out every extract that it is possible to put into 1 product! I cracked up when I saw this list 🙂 Thank goodness there are a couple of chemical sunscreens in the first line (so it isn’t pregnancy safe), I couldn’t read the list anymore after that because I was going cross eyed (insert face palm emoji here!) I do have to admit that I’m curious about the “lobster extract” I saw listed at one point!

Thank you for such a quick response! I was worried about the Rosemary oil because there is a suggestion( that it induces uterine contractions and/or can be teratogenic, haven’t seen any scientific papers on the subject). I am guessing the amount must be rather minuscule to be of real concern.

Thanks once again for the great clarity you provide in navigating the complexities of pregnancy!

I think you need extremely large amounts to induce any of those issues. Topical use is much less exposure than you’d be getting by eating Rosemary, and OB is ok with that.

Hello , I was unfortunately using a daily moisturiser with chemical sunscreen ( and a salicylate ) nearly everyday for the first five months of my pregnancy and then one for all over my body on holiday . It just didn’t occur to me that these may not have been pregnancy safe !

I the fact that you’ve put the time in to help women navigate the thousands of products and all their ingredients .

Do you know what damage I could of potentially of caused ? There is little in the way of information about that on the net.

I’m being much more scrupulous now but it’s hard not to have anxiety with wondering what I may have done to the tiny thing .

    Any advice greatly welcome .

    Many thanks
