Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. The Salicylate
Is Salicylate same as Salicylic acid? I read from this article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3114665/. It said that even a small portion is absorbed into the skin, it is unlikely to pose any risk to a developing baby. What do you think?
In the US we recommend avoiding ALL salicylates (Salicylic acid is just one of many types), even if there is a small risk it is still a risk and we don’t know how small of a risk is actually “ok”. Especially when you consider there are so many other face products on the market, it’s pretty easy to avoid them by swapping to another product.
Just a heads up that you currently have the Ultra Facial Toner on the pregnancy safe list. Should it be moved to the not-safe list?
This question was re: an international version of the product. My lists are for the US. Kiehl’s has different versions for most of their products in the US vs other countries. They do like to reformulate frequently though.

Ack! They changed it! On the Sephora site and others there’s no Salicylic Acid. My jar doesn’t have it on there (I bought it last winter), and the Kiehl’s site says “New Improved Formula” and that’s definitely a new ingredient. You’re right, it isn’t safe. I’ve moved it in the list above and added the note about the reformulation.

Super multi-corrective cream lists capryloyl salicylic acid. Is that ok or should it be on the no list ?
I’ve screened the US versions of these products, the websites I consulted (Sephora and Kiehl’s) as well as my own jar don’t list that ingredient. If there has been a reformulation it hasn’t been reflected in those resources. that is an ingredient to avoid for sure, but I can’t verify that it is actually in there….
I just looked further, I think you are referring to the SPF VERSION which has that ingredient as well as sunscreens. The non-SPF version linked here to the Kiehl’s site and above to Sephora (with identical ingredient lists) do NOT have that ingredient. Which is the version I have listed as safe. You are referring to a different product than what I have listed, which is why products are linked directly. Kiehl’s also makes an eye serum version which has a salicylic acid derivative in it and isn’t safe.

The list directly from Kiehl’s now has salicylic acid in it. Previously it did not (I used it while pregnant), I believe this was a reformulation. There are likely 2 versions out there currently, and the list you posted is fine but I strongly suggest checking the actual container your product comes in to make sure it is this version.

Hi – I thought aluminum in anti-perspirants was not good for pregnancy. The Superbly Efficient Anti-Perspirant and Deodorant has Aluminum Chlorohydrate and other companies use Aluminum chloride hexahydrate, and Aluminum Zirconium. Is all aluminum bad?

They’re considered safe, this is a pretty good overview. Note you typically get a lot more exposure with a lot of different foods, especially fish.

I prefer to lean on the conservative side as well and would find your current choice list reassuring. The precautions cover all of pregnancy, it isn’t broken down by trimester. It’s less restrictive when you’re only nursing and no longer pregnant

thank you for all your info, it’s so helpful. I was using Kiehl’s ultra facial cream for the first 2 months of my pregnancy and then switched to cethaphil. It’s odd because on the sephora webiste, it doesn’t list salicylic acid as one of the ingredients (which is why i was using it), but on the kiehl’s website they have salicylic acid as the last ingredient. Would this mean it is safe to use the one from sephora? Not sure if you would know the answer to this, but now i’m worried that i used it for the first 2 months.

I have info in my Pregnancy Beauty FAQ about what to do/think if you’ve been using a product that isn’t “safe”.
Kiehl’s seems to reformulate their products frequently (more than other brands). I doubt that the Sephora version is different, they likely haven’t updated the ingredient list on the Sephora site. I would check the container, that’s the only way to know which version you have. I’m sorry!
Ugh, looks like the Ultra facial oil-free cleanser now has salicylic acid too. Shoot, I thought that one was safe. Thanks for all the valuable research, time & info. I’ll be checking a few other products too.
Yeah, the updates are constant with Kiehl’s! I especially recommend checking your container with this brand. I love their products, but I wish it was more consistent.

You’re located in the UK, and I’m in the US, note this is mentioned in the post above. Many brands, including Kiehl’s, have different international versions for outside of the US. The US version has been reviewed and is safe. Salicylic acid is an ingredient I would suggest avoiding in pregnancy, but note I have not seen this ingredient list (and I can’t view the Kiehl’s UK site, I get booted back to the US site automatically), so I can’t comment further on safety.

I have a post about physical vs chemical sunscreens, anything not zinc or titanium under active ingredients will be a physical sunscreen basically. Sometimes they’ll change to more chemical names, in this case the Ethylhexyl Triazone, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, and Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate. I wouldn’t use this while pregnant but nursing is ok.

We don’t have info to differentiate between months of pregnancy, so it’s true for the entire pregnancy.
We don’t have evidence to really support avoiding rosemary. For things that you can also eat, if you’re allowed to eat it then it should be fine topically (as eating is a bigger exposure). I hope that helps!

Hi! Khiel’s butterstick lip balm contains ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE so it is unsafe?
That’s a chemical sunscreen that I would avoid in pregnancy. The list for the non-SPF version from their website is below, which is what I reviewed (please read the bolded paragraph above for info on issues with the Kiehl’s lists). If yours is different, then I would not use it.

Sorry I think I posted my comment in the wrong spot and I didn’t submit an ingredient list. I have a question about the Kiehl’s Creme de Corps. On the product label it says it has Benzophenone-3, which is also known as Oxybenzone, or a chemical sunscreen. I’m not sure why it is not disclosed on the ingredients list on their website. It is on the ingredients list on both Ulta and Sephora sites though. Here is the ingredient list from Ulta:

It’s likely undergoing a formulation change, kiehl’s does that a LOT and it drives me crazy. The most up to date version is usually the one on their website, and I always defer to the brand website, esp for Kiehl’s. You’re right, if the Benzophenone-3 is there it’s ok for nursing but not pregnancy, I would check on your actual product to see which version you have.

I never stated that Glycerin isn’t safe. Glycolic Acid isn’t safe, but I’ve never made that statement about Glycerin.

This is one of those cases where the AHA they are calling out is actually in the extracts, which is fine. You only need to worry about the AHA when they’re in larger amounts and added separately.

Both of these are ok to me. There are websites out there that list almost every possible plant to avoid, but the only ones that I know of with enough evidence that doctor’s think they *should* be avoided are willow and licorice.

Doh! It’s likely a change. Kiehl’s loves to put Salicylic acid and a few other ingredients in and out of their products. They drive me a bit bonkers. That bottle is ok for nursing but not pregnancy.

Please refer to the section under “how to ask about products” where I specifically address that Kiehl’s very frequently changes formulations, they vary by country and even by store. It’s very frustrating. At my last review, the product did not have salicylic acid. If your product has it, I would avoid it in pregnancy. Unfortunately I can’t control how frequently they change their ingredients. I have received many complaints about this, and if you read through the nearly 300 comments on this post you’ll see that many people have been less than kind towards me about it. I AM NOT KIEHL’S and I can not help if they change their formulations every few months without notice.

Those are very different, they’re solvents and felt to be fine. Just worry about actual glycolic acid.
Oh okay, so is glycolic also different than glycolic acid? Ex if a product says “glycolic” should that be fine,?
I’ve never seen Kiehl’s do that. That makes me wonder if there was a typo somewhere? Kiehl’s is one of those brands that changes their ingredients frequently unfortunately.

Hello! First of all, that you so much for this website! This is an absolute holy grail for any expectant mother, including myself. Now, the question I have is about Kiehl’s Creme de Corps. I ma not sure if during the time of your review the list of ingredients was different, but now it lists Propylene Glycol as one of the components. Numerous online sources claim that it is, indeed a harmful ingredient that should be avoided… Wright or wrong? Thanks!
You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. Also, off-topic, I was wondering about your approach to toothpastes. I know you review only skincare and cosmetics; I guess seeing lots of beauty brands coming up with toothpastes these days, got me thinking about their safety during pregnancy, although I have been sticking to natural/organic versions for a while now.
See the discussion above about the continually changing versions of Kiehl’s products, though note that per your IP address you’re in the UK and will have different versions than me in the US. I do NOT think salicylic acid is safe in shampoos.
I don’t review any dental products as I’m not a dentist and their ingredients are quite different.

Yes, I read about ingredients being different country to country, and usually compare product ingredients via links that you provide. I guess the best thing is to keep in mind that products get reformulated and keep checking.

I was reading the ingredient list of some of Kielh’s products and I saw that some contain butylene glycol, propylene glycol, phenoxyethanol and caprylyl glycol. I have read from other sites that these ingredients should be avoided when pregnant but I wanted to know what your thoughts are on these ingredients? I just wanted to add a comment here with no intended disrespect, but in the few products I viewed in your list of pregnancy safe things to use, there were many ingredients that are not safe during pregnancy. I only looked at a few on your list but I wanted to let you know because I’m sure many women are trusting you when they choose these products that are on your list. A simple google search on each ingredient will show you that they are not safe for pregnancy. Again, please know I mean no disrespect. But this list is very misleading and I am concerned for the pregnant mothers who would buy and use these products.

Hello! Kielhs just came out with a new super multi corrective “soft” cream that when I spoke to one of their skin experts, they said it was safe for pregnancy use. I did noticed that it does not have the salicylic acid derivative that their super multi corrective cream for face and neck has. Is it good to use during pregnancy? Here are the ingredients.
