Pregnancy Safe Body Washes

Pregnancy Safe Body Washes

While I’ve posted a lot about pregnancy safe beauty products including skin care and makeup, I haven’t done a lot on beauty staples such as body wash and deodorant. You will find some options within the brand lists in my list of pregnancy and nursing friendly brands, but today I wanted to share a list of drugstore body washes that are pregnancy and nursing safe!

As a reminder, you can learn more in my pregnancy beauty guide, and learn more about what ingredients to avoid while pregnant.

How to Request a Product Review

This list is not an exhaustive list of pregnancy safe body washes. This is a list of products that should be easily found or ordered online, hopefully they will make your life easier!

I have now purposefully turned off the comments on this post. If your product is not here, please look for the brand in my list of brands that I have reviewed for pregnancy and nursing safety. If the brand is listed, ask about your product on the brand page. If not, please ask on the main brand page. Note, the brand pages are usually the most up to date, the round ups do not get updated routinely. So in the case of a conflict, the brand page should win.

I came on this website a month ago to find pregnancy safe products. I’ve been using loocatine almond body wash for weeks now and when googling around today on oils to avoid, it came up bergamot and rosemary because they can cause misscarriage. Why do you tell women to use something that can cause a miscarriage? I hope to god that everything is ok after using it for weeks.

    Hi there!

I have two skin products that I would appreciate you reviewing and confirming to be pregnancy safe.

Nivea Cocoa Butter Lotion (I know you approved the other Nivea firming lotion, but I understand one ingredient that’s on the no-go list is fragrance, yet these products have fragrance listed – does that matter?):
Water, Glycerin, Isohexadecane, Cetearyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Palmitate, Mineral Oil, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Fragrance, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Trisodium EDTA

The other is Dove soap (white) – again on the fragrance concern:
Ingredients. Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Stearic Acid, Sodium Tallowate Or Sodium Palmitate, Lauric Acid, Sodium Isethionate, Water, Sodium Stearate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoate Or Sodium Palm Kernelate, Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, Tetrasodium Edta, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891).

    Hi!

I saw you had Dr. Bronner Castile liquid soap in the Rose scent, however are all their scents ok to use while pregnant or breastfeeding? I was wanting to get their hemp almond body wash and saw somewhere online that hemp oil should be avoided but I believe all their products for body wash have hemp in there.

Water, Organic Coconut Oil*, Potassium Hydroxide**, Organic Palm Kernel Oil*, Organic Olive Oil*, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Natural Almond Fragrance, Citric Acid, Tocopherol. *Certified Fair Trade Ingredients **None Remains After Saponifying Oils Into Soap & Glycerin.

All of the scents are different, I can’t make a blanket statement about safety.

Personally, I would avoid Hemp (note, I’m likely overly cautious, but with a decision like a body wash it’s just easy to pick a different one)

      Here’s my hemp blurb:
There isn’t info out there on the safety of Cannabis used topically during pregnancy or nursing. We do know smoking marijuana with THC has bad effects and should be avoided, though it hasn’t been fully decided if it is just the THC or something else as well.
Note that in theory Hemp and CBD do not have THC in them, it’s breed out of the plant is the official status. However, depending upon how it was processed many CBD oils will test positive for THC. But there are still the unknowns we haven’t decided about. I would not recommend using Hemp or Cannabis products while nursing or pregnant for that reason.

    Hi,

Thanks so much for this site! I’m curious about Dr. Bronner’s, more specifically the Unscented Baby Castille Soap. In other parts of the site, you recommend not using some products due to hemp oil, but two Dr. Bronner’s soaps were approved. If I’m using this as my hand soap, dish soap, cleaner, etc, is it overboard?

Water, Organic Coconut Oil*, Potassium Hydroxide**, Organic Palm Kernel Oil*, Organic Olive Oil*, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Citric Acid, Tocopherol
    *CERTIFIED FAIR TRADE INGREDIENTS
**None remains after saponifying oils into soap & glycerin.

Unfortunately this product has gluconolactone, so ok for nursing but not pregnancy.

It’s odd how they’ll completely reformulate some products for different areas of the world! I live in the US, and the asian market is very different. My aunt and uncle lived in Singapore for a long time when I was growing up, and my aunt didn’t like toothpaste and a few other products in Singapore. So every summer when she came back to the US she would bring an extra suitcase and stock up on so many silly things! I thought she was nuts, but I can understand it more now.

Thank you so much for your information and sorry for the double post. I thought it didn’t post properly yesterday.

Yes, I also surprised how exactly same product can have different ingredients in other part of the world.

I was a bit upset with Puracy because I found it from website and said is safe to use for pregnant woman (also has asked from Puracy seller in Singapore & they clarified that its safe to use for pregnancy). ☹️

I will just switch back to use the Dr Bronner’s. Thanks again and wish you have wonderful day!

Hi Christine, I noticed you have Dial Marula Oil Body Wash listed as okay here. Cocamidopropyl betaine is an ingredient in this product and I recently read that prolonged use brings cancer risks…but I couldn’t find corroborating evidence of the risk across different websites, and it seems like a common/popular ingredient in many washes! Can you share your thoughts on that? Thank you!

    • 11.3.20
      Christine said:

It’s one of a very long list of ingredients where they have a correlation between an ingredient and something else. Not necessarily causation. And often these correlations are so complex that they will never be sorted out. Currently we have no reason to believe it’s an issue during pregnancy.

The Dr. Bronner’s you have linked here does contain hemp seed oil, but I see you say to avoid it in a response even though the fda says hemp seed oil and hemp seeds pose no threat to pregnant or breastfeeding women (even for consumption). I use the Baby Unscented Pure Castile soap and I can’t find one that doesn’t have hemp seed oil in it. I’m wondering why you recommended something and linked it but then said something different.

    • 11.10.20
      Christine said:

It didn’t have Hemp in it when I linked it. I’m at the mercy of online retailers who are in charge of their own websites. Sometimes they have incorrect ingredients listed and that’s what I’ve reviewed or the brand will update a product and the new version has those ingredients. This is why I’ve said to double check your products. It’s not a conspiracy on my part… I am now removing all Dr. Bronner’s from the list given conflicting information. There have been some products from Dr. Bronner’s that per their ingredient lists had no hemp when I reviewed them. I have tried to be extremely careful with this brand given how many of their products do contain hemp.

Having said that, even though the FDA says that about hemp, many physicians have their reservations and recommend avoidance. This is my site, so I can share my reservations. It’s not up to the FDA. As a pediatrician who deals with babies with in utero exposure to marijuana, I definitely have concerns.

I linked the one I reviewed, but I’m in the US so it’s likely different. This is ok for nursing but not pregnancy due to salicylate, like you said.
