Pregnancy Safe Drugstore Shampoos

Pregnancy Safe Drugstore Shampoos

Today, I’m sharing a few drugstore shampoos that are safe to use while pregnant! I have a huge list of list of pregnancy safe brands, but one of my most requested product specific topics has been a list of inexpensive hair shampoos. This list isn’t exhaustive, and you’ll almost always find the most up to date information from the brand specific pages.

Which hair products do you need to worry about?

Technically, none. Most OBs will tell you not to worry about any hair products. Your hair is a dead protein, and it can not absorb anything. It’s amazing how pregnancy brain can take over and we forget that simple fact!

Personally, I screened products that would sit on my scalp for a few minutes (aka- shampoos, scrubs, etc). My thought process was that those products would be similar to a face wash, even if washed off right away it sits there for a bit. So, on this list you’ll find products that sit on your scalp. This is shampoo, scalp treatments and root styling products. Other styling products should just be on the hair shaft, and if you’re worried about sprays being inhaled, I recommend holding your breath while you spray and then step away a few feet. Conditioner and treatment masques don’t usually touch your scalp, though I have screened a few masques that people sometimes apply up to their roots. If you apply any of these further from the scalp, they’re all safe (even if I screened them as not safe).

Thank you so so much for your quick response! One question – on webmd it says willow barn is harmful for breastfeeding. Are you regarding it as ok as I’m not taking it orally just through my skulp?

“Breast-feeding: Using willow bark while breast-feeding is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. Willow bark contains chemicals that can enter breast milk and have harmful effects on the nursing infant. Don’t use it if you are breast-feeding.”

I’ve never seen Willow Bark mentioned as something to avoid while nursing. As it is fine to use directly on the baby, I’m would think it’s fine to use while nursing.

Hi! Thank you SO much for all of this, it’s super helpful! I read that Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT) should be avoided while pregnant and I’m having a hard time finding a shampoo/conditioner without it. I don’t see it mentioned on your site anywhere and it’s in some of the drugstore shampoos your approved. Your info is super detailed so I’m assuming this isn’t an oversight, what is your take on MIT/CMIT? Thank you so much!!

There isn’t any convincing data to suggest avoidance. You can find a site that says to avoid everything pretty much, in particular “natural” sites. They seem to not trust anything they can’t pronounce, whether there is data to support their stance or not. I would look carefully at the credentials of the person writing the site, any one self taught is pretty suspect. Personally, I’m double boarded in Pediatrics.
This is what I screen for: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Hi there! Is this shampoo safe for pregnancy?
by Dae haircare. I get confused if extracts are safe in skincare and haircare.

-Hibiscus Flower Extract: Cleanses skin naturally and gently, helping to shed dead skin cells and stimulate hair follicles.
-Aloe Leaf Juice: Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, it helps to promote healthy and shiny hair.
-False Daisy Extract: Has antimicrobial properties to help reduce flakiness and calm an irritated scalp.

Water, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Methyl Oleoyl Taurate, Betaine, Acrylates Copolymer, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Lauryl Lactyl Lactate, Silicone Quaternium-3, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Caprylyl Glycol, Chlorphenesin, Glycerin, Eclipta Prostrata Extract, Trideceth-12, Mica, Polyquaternium-7, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Titanium Dioxide, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Moringa Oleifera Leaf Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Butylene Glycol, Cereus Grandiflorus (Cactus) Extract, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Fruit Extract, Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Flower Extract, Phalaenopsis Amabilis Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice.

#1 has Glyoxylic Acid, which I hadn’t heard of before. I can’t find much info about it, but it is pretty close to Glycolic Acid (with one OH being swapped out for an aldehyde) and my PhD in chemical engineering husband was worried about reactivity, esp if it is as easily absorbed as glycolic acid. So it’s an unknown that I would avoid until there’s more info.
#2 looks ok for pregnancy and nursing

If the issue is oiliness and not flakes, I would look at this one from Klorane, it’s safe for both pregnancy and nursing and is meant for oily hair. You can find it on Amazon, I think Sephora and maybe ULTA? I would also consider trying out the matching dry shampoo (also pregnancy/nursing safe). I used to have to wash my hair daily due to oil (which then dried out my scalp, making it itchy and flaky), but over time I was able to train my scalp to make less oil. I would wash, immediately put in dry shampoo, and slowly I was able to space out my hair washing to every 2-3 days. It saves a lot of time and my scalp is so much happier!
