Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Obagi

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Obagi

Pregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Obagi as of 12/20/2021. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Don’t See Your Product? Read This Before You Ask About It…

Please read the Pregnancy Beauty Guide intro first, where you will learn which products you actually need to worry about (spoiler alert, you don’t need to worry about all makeup or hair products). I will not review products that fall into the “don’t worry about it” categories. If you want to ask about a specific product, I require that you follow these guidelines for asking about pregnancy/nursing safety. You can also learn more about how to use these pregnancy safety lists. I will delete questions that don’t follow the guidelines or are rude.

ZO Skinhealth by Obagi is found in a separate post.

    Hi Doctor:

You said Obagi Nu Derm blend fx is ok for breast feeding but Nu Derm Clear fx not ok during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to Arbutin, but the Nu Derm blend fx has Arbutin as key ingredient too, so why is that one ok during breastfeeding? Could you please clarify? Because I was thinking about getting one until I noticed Arbutin. Thank you so much.

Unfortunately I’m at the mercy of the online lists, which are sometimes wrong. I don’t remember the Arbutin being there before. I’ll move it down to not safe. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your clarification, I won’t get it until I stop breastfeeding then. Do you have any recommendations on what I can use to lighten up those stubborn pregnancy mask on my face while breastfeeding? I am not sure if they are called pregnancy mask, but they are dark spots I got from pregnancy. I am already using vitamin c and it’s not helping. Thank you again.

Unfortunately Vitamin C is pretty much the only one you can use while pregnant or nursing. Niacinamide has a little bit of action against hyperpigmentation, but not much. The hormonal shift after weaning will help a lot!

Hi there. Apologies if you’ve already answered this question and I haven’t see it, but I thought that products with glycolic acid were ok for use during pregnancy as well as nursing. Is it not safe to use them while pregnant?

Thanks so much for your help!

I address it in my post on skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. Glycolic acid during pregnancy is more controversial than many people think. With topical use 28% is absorbed, and we don’t have evidence that it is safe or unsafe beyond that. But we are pretty sure that it reaches the baby. It was listed on the “to avoid” list my OB gave me when pregnant (I went to a very large and well known OB department at the local university). My list is pretty conservative, but with the info we have now I feel it should likely be avoided. Since I call it out in my posts, if you’re comfortable using Glycolic Acid during pregnancy it is easy to take that into account.

Hi! I’ve read salicylic topical is okay — you have CLENZIderm M.D. Pore Therapy: Salicylic Acid as listed not okay during pregnancy. I used during my first two with approval from my doctor so I’m curious why you listed as not. Pregnant with my third and was considering using again as pregnancy acne has flared up!

    • 9.13.19
      15mins said:

So it’s a bit more controversial when you talk to physicians. Some think it is fine, but others aren’t as sure. There’s some discussion here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
My own OB (part of a large, top ranked University OB department) included it in their list of ingredients to avoid. I’m on the more conservative side in my recommendations, your doctor might not be as conservative. As there isn’t much data regarding actual safety, we don’t have concrete information to say if it is or isn’t safe. So all recommendations are based upon concerns and logical assumptions.

Hi! I just wanted to say that 15minutebeauty has been a huge help during my first and my second pregnancy and breastfeeding (although I have found it a bit too late after buying several Omorovicza products packed with essential oils😂😂😂).
As my second baby-girl, Nora, is now almost 5 months old and still breastfeeding full-time, I am getting back on track with my skincare products. As I am an anestesiologist, I always opted for a skincare that is simple and all-in-one product as I usually don’t have the time to layer products. I have my day routine covered now with vitamin C moisturizers and mineral SPF creams, but I am looking for an effective anti-age/renewing night treatment so I was wandering what are your thoughts on Vintner’s Daughter serum? It says all over the net that it is breastfeeding safe, but it has lot of essential oils and I just wanted to be sure before taking a splurge. Thank you and many kind regards from Croatia!

Essential oils are ok for pregnancy and nursing (the main exceptions for oils/extracts are licorice root, neem and willow bark during pregnancy), I just wouldn’t take a bath or use giant amounts. Looking at the ingredients of that one I think it’s fine! I’ve heard it’s great, I hope it works for you 🙂
