Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Dermalogica

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Dermalogica

Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe skincare products from Dermalogica as of 4/30/2020. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. If they release a new product that is not listed here, please comment below and I will add it. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Please note, it can take up to an hour to review the ingredient lists of each product. I review with my own list of pregnancy safe criteria. I obtain my ingredient lists from the brands and major retailers (typically Nordstrom and Sephora), and I review the US versions. Please do not ask me to re-review the same products over and over, I do not have the time to do so, and many people have been rude about this. For more brands, please head over to the list of pregnancy safe products.

Hi there! A number of articles online state that Daily Microfoliant is safe to use during pregnancy because the amount of Salicylic Acid is less than 2% and you wash it off (rather than let it soak in). Do you agree with that or you still feel like it’s unsafe because of it having any of that ingredient?

        • 6.10.19
          15mins said:

Pretty much all over the counter products max at 2% Salicylic Acid. And yes, it gets washed off but there’s usually some residue left behind. I have SA on my list because it was on my OB’s list and many OBs tell me that they tell patients to avoid it, but a couple of years ago ACOG put out a statement that they think SA and Benzoyl Peroxide are both safe to use during pregnancy. They previously didn’t say anything. I have them still on my to avoid list because so many OBs were still concerned, but really I do agree with you that a rinse of product is different than a leave on product. But, we don’t have actual safety data. The studies we would need to do are all unethical to perform. So I err on the side of avoiding, both on the site and also when I was pregnant. It’s up to you!

    Hello,

I’ve just purchased Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant and I haven’t seen before but on the ingredient list it says it has malic acid in it. I’m currently breastfeeding and wanted to know if it’s safe? I read somewhere that it’s not safe while pregnant but maybe ok while nursing.

After purchasing it and googling it for reviews, I spotted a website for a beauty salon stating that it’s not suitable for pregnant women! I am living in the UK and have cross referenced both the US and UK product ingredients, both are identical.
Please can you confirm that this product is definitely safe to use? I’m slightly dubious after stumbling upon the other sight. Thank you!

My review of the ingredients is fine, but as there isn’t a standard set of ingredients to avoid it depends on who you listen to. I’m a physician, not a beauty salon. I have specific training in pregnancy and breast feeding safety of medications. I don’t know what a salon would get in terms of training. I also don’t know what in the product would have worried them.

Hello, I see that clearing skin wash is not safe for pregnancy, but the salicylic acid is only at .5%. I also saw that its not good because of licorice root. Why is that? Would the biggest concern be if we used the product that didn’t get rinsed off right away like the age bright clearing serum and overnight clearing gel (all within the Active Clearing products)?

Also, I see that the Active Moist is listed under not safe for pregnancy bc it is a chemical sunscreen, but there is no spf in the product. Is there another one you are referring to there?

    Thanks so much!!

In the US we don’t recognize a gradient of risk when it comes to timing of ingredients during pregnancy or amount. As the studies to determine if an ingredient is even safe or not are unethical to do, the ones that would let us decide if 0.5% Salicylic Acid is ok but 2% isn’t are also ones we can’t perform. There’s also so many variables we would need to control for that we couldn’t do it (this baby will have X genetic disease, does that change things? This mom has eczema and things absorb more easily into her skin, this mom wants to apply SA all over her face instead of just a spot treatment)… so it doesn’t really matter what % the ingredient is in the product, if it is there we recommend avoidance, because we can’t do the studies to know what the actual cutoffs are.
      There’s discussion on that here:
      pregnancy beauty FAQ

Also, discussion on salicylic acid and licorice root are found here:
skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
My list of ingredients to avoid is pretty conservative. Salicylic Acid is actually classified now as something that’s ok to use during pregnancy by ACOG, but that wasn’t based on any actual studies/evidence, and I know a lot of other physicians who still recommend avoidance, so I do as well. Licorice root does act through the same mechanism as some of the more “bad” skin lighteners such as hydroquinone/arbutin, but it is weaker in that regard. I added it to my list when some OBs were expressing concern about it as well. But both of those are among my “softest” calls for ingredients to avoid. If you don’t agree with me on them (and they’re the ones that I’d say are the ones to disagree with me on), since I call out those ingredients in my product reviews you can still use those ones. Ultimately it’s up to you and your overall concern/anxiety about topical products during pregnancy. Talk to your own doctor as well!

Finally, Active Moist has Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, which is Octinoxate, a chemical sunscreen. In order to claim actual SPF value, brands need to put a product through expensive and time consuming sunscreen tests to prove it meets the definition of that number in that formulation. But, adding a sunscreen to a product will improve its photostability and shelf life. So they add sunscreens to non-SPF products a lot for that reason. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate is the one I see most commonly, it shows up in everything from cleansers to night creams.

I’m going to esthetician school and I’m pregnant. I am super stoked to find your page and very grateful for it. I will be using this so much now for myself and in the future for my clientele. At school we do use dermalogica products and at work we use, PCA, Jan Marini, Cyme, and obagi. Anyway I saw that rapid reveal peel was listed in the “safe” area and it contains AHA’s just making sure this was in the correct spot or if the amount was low enough to make it safe?

It’s because when you look at the actual ingredient list the AHAs aren’t listed on their own, they’re contained within extracts and such.

Hi! Thank you so much for this list! Wanted to ask about my favorite Intensive Moisture Balance. It is currently in “safe” products however in comments there was conversation that on Ulta it had retinoids in ingredients. I checked Dermalogica website and several other websites – didn’t find specific “retinoid” names. But wanted to double check with you to be safe

Unfortunately this happens when products are in the process of being reformulated. You won’t know until you buy the product and see which version you get.
