Pregnancy Safe Skincare from REN

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from REN

Pregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Ren as of 1/28/2022. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Don’t See Your Product? Read This Before You Ask About It…

Please read the Pregnancy Beauty Guide intro first, where you will learn which products you actually need to worry about (spoiler alert, you don’t need to worry about all makeup or hair products). I will not review products that fall into the “don’t worry about it” categories. If you want to ask about a specific product, I require that you follow these guidelines for asking about pregnancy/nursing safety. You can also learn more about how to use these pregnancy safety lists. I will delete questions that don’t follow the guidelines or are rude.

why not the Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic??? I read this about willow bark..

“willow bark” and “salicylic acid” are not the same thing. Rather, when ingested, the body converts the salicilin contained in willow bark to salicylic acid, but this requires complex functions of the human digestive system that the skin does not do.3 Because they’re not the same, the benefits are different. Willow bark is not as strong of an active ingredient as salicylic acid, but it does retain aspirin-like qualities, specifically anti-inflammatory properties.

    thanks

    • 7.7.19
      15mins said:

It’s specifically because of those aspirin like qualities that we say to avoid it. All salicylates are actually to be avoided (doesn’t your OB put in big letters on paperwork to NOT take aspirin?), Willow Bark has enough of that property that my OB specifically called it out. There’s more information in my post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy, but wow you seem very upset about my opinion. It’s just my opinion, as a physician. You can ask your physician.

      • 6.24.21
        Mimi said:

Hi Doc Thank you so much for all the information. My OB has recommended me to take 1 aspirin at night time before bed everyday for future pregnancies after a stillbirth I had this year. I am just a little confused about aspirin and pregnancy now. Please could you shed some light? Many thanks.

        • 6.24.21
          Christine said:

This is best discussed with your OB as I’m a pediatrician not an OB. But this is all about a risk/benefit analysis we do before recommending anything to a patient. A daily aspirin is often felt to be lower risk than other blood thinners to prevent clots, preventing another miscarriage.

skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Bauchiol is one that I’ve been treating as a retinoid as brands claim it has the same mechanism of action as a retinoid, but there’s no data supporting safety. As retinoids are the biggest ingredient to avoid because they have the strongest data linking them to birth defects, unless there is data supporting that they are in fact safe (which is unethical research to perform so we won’t get the needed data), I say to avoid them. I don’t think Susan Yara has any medical background, she’s just a “beauty expert.” I’m a pediatrician, we are specifically trained in looking at medications and products for nursing and pregnant moms.

Just curious why some products are listed as “not safe for pregnancy” because of Glycolic Acid and others considered safe? Is it the amount? Specifically curious about the Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask
listed here, and the Sephora Glow Peel Pads (for example). Thanks!

    • 2.10.21
      Christine said:

It’s dependent upon whether the ingredient is listed separately as a chemical ingredient, or they’re just calling it out in an extract. In an extract (like the Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask) doesn’t count, it’s felt to be slightly different in chemical structure and of a lower %. The Sephora Glow Peel Pads have glycolic acid added and listed in the ingredient list.

        Hi Christine

I have a question on this. I wrote to the team at REN about the Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask to ask if there was any glycolic acid in the product (which it states in the ‘about the collection’ section of the page, but not in the ingredients list). They said that “Glycol Lactic includes Glycolic Acid – approx. 0.5% from Pineapple Extract”. When I asked why it wasn’t listed as an ingredient, they said “Unfortunately they are not able to list all the the ingredients present, only the high percentage and risk reaction ingredients are mentioned. ” I’m a bit confused by this because the full list of ingredients does appear to be on their website (for every product!)

From this response, do you still think this product is safe to use for fertility/pregnancy? Forgive me, because I don’t understand how ingredients are formulated or listed – I just want to be sure about it because this is one of the few products I use and love.

        Thank you

        • 11.30.22
          Christine said:

Legally if they are adding the glycolic acid separately it MUST be listed in the ingredients, which is when you need to worry about it. If it is included as part of the pineapple, they do NOT need to list is separately. That’s also when you don’t need to worry about it.
