Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Ole Henriksen

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Ole Henriksen

Pregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Ole Henriksen as of 8/14/2022. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Don’t See Your Product? Read This Before You Ask About It…

Please read the Pregnancy Beauty Guide intro first, where you will learn which products you actually need to worry about (spoiler alert, you don’t need to worry about all makeup or hair products). I will not review products that fall into the “don’t worry about it” categories. If you want to ask about a specific product, I require that you follow these guidelines for asking about pregnancy/nursing safety. You can also learn more about how to use these pregnancy safety lists. I will delete questions that don’t follow the guidelines or are rude.

I agree with Ana! Thank you so much for doing this! I realized that the Ole Henriksen «Express the Truth Moisturizing Creme» with African red tea extract, vitamin C derivatives and jojoba seed oil, is also not on there. I just bought a huge bottle as I thought it was the newer version of the Truth Advanced Moisturizing Creme, but then I realized that they were two different cremes. These are the ingredients:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ethyl Macadamiate, Parfum/Fragrance, Glycerin, Triisostearyl Citrate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Palmitic Acid, Stearyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ceteareth-20, Carbomer, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Laurate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Sorbitan Stearate, Polysorbate 60, Sorbitol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Hydroxide, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Vegetable Oil, Polyepsilon-Lysine, Caramel, Allantoin, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium PCA, Calcium Ascorbate, Magnesium Gluconate, Zinc Gluconate, Methylsilanol Mannuronate, Phenoxyethanol, Aspalathus Linearis Leaf Extract, Copper Gluconate, Myristic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol, Sorbic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Malic Acid, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Limonene, Linalool.

    Is this safe?

    Thanks again! Love from Norway.

          Not necessarily.
My discussion on bakuchiol is under retinoids in here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
And I think (?) I have discussion on retinoids in nursing here: Skin Care Ingredients to Avoid While Nursing

I’ve confirmed that bakuchiol acts via the same receptors as retinoids. We have no actual safety data, those studies haven’t been done and won’t be done due to ethical issues. There’s been a strong trend in the medical world toward recommending avoidance of retinoids while nursing, though we don’t have evidence to back up that but it’s similar to other recommendations where we think there are real reasons for this rec.

As such. I recommend avoiding bakuchiol for both pregnancy and nursing. Ultimately it’s up to you. You should know there also isn’t a lot of info regarding benefits of bakuchiol currently, at least in the peer reviewed medical literature. If you really want to fight aging while nursing and want to be more conservative with your ingredients, I would look at peptides, vitamin C and niacinamide.

Please read the post above, I don’t say it has retinoid, instead it has Bakachiol, a natural ingredient the brand claims works just like a retinoid. There’s no information specifically about how this ingredient works, so I have been treating it like a retinoid. Note, we also don’t have any specific information stating that it is safe. It also has other ingredients to be wary of that many OBs say to avoid such as licorice root. I’m more conservative than other sources, this is likely because I’m a pediatrician, and I’ve also spoken with a large number of OBs so I have compiled the ingredients they are worried about here. It’s up to you.

I thought I had removed it from the list there months ago (apparently it didn’t save the change? I just removed it again) but it’s in the comments there and here and also on that post (which I have now changed to bold to make it more noticeable, but it said this before), that in the case of a reformulation you need to always look at the brand page for the most up to date information. I can’t remember every post a brand might be mentioned in, and so I always say to check the brand page for the info, it is impossible for me to update every roundup.

This was very recently reformulated I think (or online ingredient lists were updated). So you would need to check your packaging to see if you have the benzophenone-4 or not. In this formulation it is only ok for nursing, not pregnancy.

So, there’s nothing here that looks like a stem cell. There’s also nothing that’s related to an orange. The US Sephora site has the same list and called out ingredients.

Per the Ole website THIS is the list of ingredients, which is different than what Sephora has:
Aqua/Water/Eau, Lactobacillus Ferment, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Panthenol, Sodium Polyglutamate, Tocopherol, Glycerin, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange) Peel Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange) Callus Culture Extract, Citrus Sinensis (orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange) Oil, Hippophae Rhamnoides Extract, Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Citrus Limon (lemon) Fruit Extract, Gluconolactone, Lithothamnion Calcareum Extract, Helianthus Annuus (sunflower) Seed Oil, Chondrus Crispus (carrageenan) Extract, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Citric Acid, Sodium Riboflavin Phosphate, Sodium Tocopheryl Phosphate, Sodium Citrate, Potassium Hydroxide, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Benzoate, Calcium Gluconate, Triethylhexanoin, Polyglyceryl-3 Laurate, Acrylates/c10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Triethyl Citrate, Limonene, Linalool, Citral.
*Naturally derived fragrance per iso standard 16128-1

It’s really odd that Sephora would have a different list up there, they’re usually very reliable for ingredient lists, but I try to review products based on what the brand says the ingredients are. I’ve added it to the post based on what the Ole site. I would consider it Ok for nursing but not pregnancy due to the stem cells and gluconolactone.

These are the stem cells: Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange) Callus Culture Extract

Ole seems to leave the “new formulation” designation on their site for over a year. When a product has a new formulation Sephora actually changes the page to a new URL and my links stop working (this is super helpful actually!), and my link is still working. I also checked the list you provided, and it’s fine. But every time I redo Ole’s list their most popular products all say “new formulation”…. I think they have a different definition of new than you and I do 🙂

Hi – I see Banana Bright™ Eye Crème listed as a pregnancy safe eye cream in various articles online.
Does that sound accurate? Are there any other pregnancy eye creams that you prefer?

    Thank you so much!

    Hi Dr. General question,
Above you have some products listed as nursing safe that have glycolic acid and licorice root, then below you have products listed as not pregnancy or nursing safe that have “Bakuchiol, Stem Cells, Glycolic Acid, Licorice root”, are these no longer nursing safe too because of the bakuchiol and stem cells? or also the glycolic and licorice root?
    Thanks

    • 6.2.23
      Christine said:

It’s due to the bakuchiol, which acts the same way as a retinoid. Stem Cells should be avoided in pregnancy but are ok for nursing.
