Thank you so much for covering this topic! I unknowingly used a makeup that had some type of retinol in it and probably a lot of other bad ingredients while pregnant and my baby developed moderate eczema within 1 week after birth, which means I have been putting steroid cream on my precious nugget for more than half his life at this point.
I would urge mothers to take your advice and steer clear of anything questionable. I am now trying for baby number two and being a lot more careful what I put on my skin.

This is fine, but you don’t need to worry about conditioner as it shouldn’t be on your scalp, only the hair shaft. Your hair is made of dead proteins and can’t absorb anything. So, no need to worry about hair products that aren’t applied to your scalp.
I think most of us probably spray this on our roots as well and since it’s a detangler we do t wash it out. Still safe to use?

I have a question about Phenoxyethanol and about Fragrance (Parfum) being listed in products that are considered safe. Some sites suggest that these are harmful for pregnant women, but then I also see them listed in products on sites that say that product is safe. Are these two ingredients anything to worry about during pregnancy? Thanks so much!
They’re not really anything to worry about. Per my discussions with OBs and derms, the main thing is actually that pregnancy is a “sensitizing” time, when you can start reacting to ingredients you haven’t previously, and those sensitivities might last longer than pregnancy. Fragrance is one of the most common ingredients to do this.

One thing I’m just noticing though is that I switched to the Honest Gentle Gel Cleanser toward the beginning of my pregnancy due to their website saying it was pregnancy safe but I see you have it on your “Not Safe for Pregnancy, Ok for Nursing” list because of Gluconolactone. Are you able to share a little more insight on this. I’m feeling really nervous now that I’ve been using this for about 5 of my 6 months being pregnant thinking it was safe but maybe it actually isn’t.

I have a question about the vitamin C radiance serum. I see that it is listed on the safe for pregnancy and nursing list, but I have a question about the diglucosyl Gallic acid – is that one of the AHAs? I feel like I read somewhere to avoid it.

I did send them an email and asked if to tell lip balm has licorice root, because I don’t see them in the ingredient list. So they did confirm tinted lip balm does not have licorice root.

The Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is a licorice root ingredient. This does in fact have licorice root. It just doesn’t say “licorice root” in parenthesis, so the person you communicated with may have been confused. But that’s licorice root.

Hi, my sister-in-law got me an Honest Beauty mama-to-be package for Mother’s Day that included the bump butter, body lotion and makeup remover wipes. I used the makeup remover wipes last night without checking here first and I see they are not good for pregnancy, and neither is the bump butter or body lotion! My question is, is it ok that I used the wipes once? I followed quickly with my actual facial cleanser so hopefully no damage was done 😔 thank you so much!

Gluconolactone (poly-hydroxy acid), Glycolic Acid (alpha hydroxy acid) and Gluconic Acid (carboxylic acid related to glucose) are all different things. Gluconic acid is fine to use during pregnancy. Also keep in mind if it isn’t going near your skin you don’t really need to worry about it, which is likely the case with conditioner. Info here: Hair products to worry about

It’s possible, brands randomly due that. I don’t see the licorice root here either, it often starts like glycc… and then more chemical name.
I do NOT recommend utilizing the EWG. They ignore many pregnancy safety recommendations and their conclusions about many scientific studies are often overstated or sometimes even in direct opposition to the scientists who performed the actual studies. They’re not well regarded by most of the medical and scientific communities, they are a lobbyist group.

Hi, just wanted to let you know that the Gentle Gel Cleanser appears to have gluconolactone in it, at least according to the ingredients list on Honest Beauty’s website. I see you usually have gluconolactone-containing products listed in nursing-safe but this one is listed in your pregnancy-safe list. So I’m not sure if they added it to their ingredients recently, but thought I’d mention it!

Hi! I see the Honest “Mama’s Gotta Glow Face and Body Wash” is on the list of not safe while pregnant, but I’ve been using it my whole pregnancy (now 23 weeks). How bad is that?? I thought it was safe because it seemed “clean”!
Clean isn’t a thing really. It’s a marketing term. And it means nothing for pregnancy/nursing safety.

I am looking for a safe mineral spf during pregnancy and am not finding any options. I noticed you have the Honest self-defense mineral sunscreen on the safe to use during pregnancy but I noticed there is gluconolactone in the ingredient list. Is it still safe to use?

Safe for pregnancy and nursing
Hi! I’m 19 weeks pregnant and a little worried because I just read that here that the Mama’s Gotta Glow Face & Body Wash and the Bump Body Butter are not safe for pregnancy. I’ve been using the face and body wash every day since I learned I was pregnant and just started using the bump butter. Is this something I should be terribly worried about affecting my baby? I obviously am switching products today.
