Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Deciem: The Ordinary, Chemistry Brand, Hylamide, and Niod

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from The Ordinary

Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find every pregnancy safe skincare product from Deciem’s Brands as of 12/2/2022. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

I have included The Ordinary, Chemistry Brand, Hylamide, and Niod all in the same post. For some reason, readers were consistently going to other brands and asking about products I had already reviewed. To prevent this from happening, they are now all in 1 post. Scroll down to find your brand. The brands are separated.

            Hello!!

Hoping you can help me with the following questions as I am reading mixed reviews.

I currently use the natural moisturising factors + AH but it does have Phenoxyethanol in it. Is this ingredient considered not pregnancy safe?

Also you have mentioned that Glycolic acid is not suitable during pregnancy, however most other reviews mention topical Glycolic is a pregnancy safe alternative to salicylic.

If you could help clarify that would be great.

            Thank you 🙂

Phenoxyethanol is in this discussion: ingredients I’m not worried about during pregnancy

The discussion on glycolic acid is in here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy, but bottom line is that this isn’t universally accepted as safe and there are people in the medical community that go either way (esp in the US, where I live). I’m on the conservative side.

Check the list when you get your foundation, but when people provide another list from another country, I’m only screening the list they provided.

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. Nursing is even less restrictive than pregnancy.

It’s absorbed 27% into the skin and the actual studies to prove safety can’t be done (they’re unethical to perform), so it’s on the list of ingredients to avoid from many OBs

Hi thanks for all the info! If I could piggyback on this question, I’ve read several articles reporting glycolic acid is ok for pregnancy. I’ve been using a 5% glycolic toner am and pm for about a month (I’m 24 weeks) and my OB was fine with it. I’ve also polled some mom groups I’m in and many have used the same toner throughout pregnancy. What are the actual concerns if you are aware of them other than absorption. TIA:)

In all of my discussions with OBs they mention glycolic acid as an issue and it was on the “to avoid” list from my OB at the University of Michigan. It is absorbed into the body, but conducting actual studies of safety for ingredients during pregnancy is actually unethical to do the studies we need to do to prove true safety. It’s up to you, I’m not the end all authority on this, if your OB and you are fine with it that’s your decision. Personally, I avoided glycolic acid while pregnant and it is on my list of ingredients to avoid while pregnant.

Arbutin and hydroquinone and similar acting ingredients are one of the few hard and fast “do not use this while nursing” ingredients. Note we do not have big studies to back this up, but due to the way these ingredients work it is recommended to avoid them while pregnant or nursing. If you need to target hyperpigmentation I would look at a vitamin C serum instead.

This article references oral supplementation, which is a very different level of exposure than the amount you’ll find in a topical product. Every OB I’ve asked about it considers it fine to use topically.

      • 6.30.19
        CG said:

Why do you have licorice root on your list of ingredients to avoid when the only studies of it in pregnancy are also in ingesting it and not applying it topically (like resveratrol)? Wondering why you view licorice root differently from resveratrol (and glycolic and salicylic acid for that matter since there’s no evidence finding they’re harmful).

        • 6.30.19
          15mins said:

Licorice root was added to the list based upon discussions with many OBs who were having reservations about it and telling their patients to start avoiding it. Nothing specific came out that made me put it on the list, but it was mentioned by many OBs over and over for months as something they tell their patients to avoid.

Almost none of these ingredients have evidence they are unsafe, doing those studies (for oral or topical) would be unethical. The study you already linked wasn’t even in humans, such a study could never be performed in humans. Instead we make some educated (or not so educated) guesses based upon what we know is absorbed, what we know about the ingredient’s mechanism of action and how that could affect a baby.

For example, glycolic acid has been documented to have effects on rat fetuses (here and here), but not on rabbit. But we could never replicate this study in humans. We do know (I can’t find the reference now) that it is 28% absorbed after topical application. We don’t have evidence that it is harmful, but we also don’t have evidence that it is safe. We know it is absorbed and could be harmful. Salicylic Acid and Benozyl Peroxide are widely warned against by OBs in the US, however note a few years ago ACOG came out with a statement that they were safe and ok to use during pregnancy. No new information was released, and many OBs still recommend avoiding it as a result. They’re similar to glycolic acid in that they are absorbed and have theoretical (but unproven) risks.

A lot of this data is still emerging. I’ve recommended avoiding chemical sunscreens for years because my OB (part of one of the top 5 academic OB departments in the US) said to avoid them. They are absorbed, there’s concern about oxybenzone and it’s potential estrogenic effects, and chemical sunscreens can cause skin irritation and pregnancy is known to be a sensitizing time for the skin. A few months ago more evidence came out about a potential birth defect from Oxybenzone exposure (here and here).

My recommendations are just that- recommendations. I’m not the end all be all. My recommendations tend to be on the conservative side, but note that when an ingredient is already found in the body naturally (lactic acid) or you aren’t recommended to avoid eating it (resveratrol and close chemical relatives are found in foods, as are parabens) I generally don’t recommend avoiding them in topical products, as that is a much lower level of exposure. There are a lot of discussions about what ingredients to avoid topically in a few online forums I’m in (extremely large groups of female physicians), mostly OB and peds but also FP. I pay attention to those discussions and what other physicians are worried about.

In the US in medical education we’re taught that pregnancy and to a lesser extent nursing are times of the ultimate risk avoidance. We don’t recognize moderation or gradiations of risk. A good example of this is alcohol. In Europe they say it is ok to have 1 drink a day while pregnant, we don’t do this in the US and in fact we vilify pregnant woman who do drink or are even thought to be drinking.

I discuss some of this though usually not this in depth in my post on Ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. Though I had to turn the comments off on that post because people were asking about specific product safety over and over there, often on products I already addressed elsewhere. Note I specifically call out ingredients that I’m concerned about when talking about pregnancy safety. So if you don’t mind licorice root, and that’s the only ingredient I’ve mentioned, you can consider something safe. I don’t call out Resveratrol as I’m not concerned about it, I’m waiting for more evidence to come out. Given the data that is out there now I do anticipate something more will come out in the next few years, someone it likely looking at it.

I hope all of my rambling made sense, I wrote this pre-coffee while getting breakfast for my girls LOL

Not exactly the same as glycolic acid, but I would look for lactic acid products if you really want chemical exfoliation. Otherwise this is a good excuse to buy a facial cleansing brush like a clarisonic

I need to know if it’s safe to use Ordinary Natural Moisturizer Factors+ HA; Buffet (Peptides serum); lactic Acid 10%+HA while breastfeeding. I have asked Ordinary customer service in Canada if those products are safe for use in pregnancy/breastfeeding but they have replied to me that even they cannot say for sure because the brand didn’t have enough research and testing done. Thank you in advance for your answer!!!!

Please read the link about why I require a product list to answer your question. I work full time. I am currently doing long stretches as a doctor in a CoVID unit. These products have different names at different stores and in different countries (and note, as I’m in the US I can’t even view the websites of your stores in India). Asking me to then hunt down and find your exact product is a huge time ask, and you’re not even being polite about it. I need you to provide the ingredient list of your exact product, this is stated in the post above and then also in the link I just provided. I get up to 50 questions about product safety a day, it is not unreasonable on my part to ask you to provide this list.

My husband doesn’t understand how restrictive I have to be with everything I put in and on my body during pregnancy, and how hard it is to find out if products or safe or not. Because of this, I skipped skincare altogether during my last and current pregnancy. Now, because of you and all of the amazing time and effort you have put into this, I can go back to some of my favorite products. Also, I can’t imagine why anyone would be rude to you! I’m confused as to why you’re listing glycolic acid as unsafe for pregnancy. Everything I’ve read and my dermatologist advises that glycolic acid (10% and lower, no peels, OTC products) is safe. Could you explain please? I have the glycolic toner. Thanks!

      15mins said:

I’m a pediatrician, not a dermatologist. I align more with OBs, we receive the same training in counseling patients regarding medications and products during pregnancy and nursing.
First, there’s no studies regarding safety during pregnancy for most ingredients, and we can’t do those studies as they’re actually unethical. Glycolic acid isn’t universally accepted as safe by the medical community, it is highly absorbed (at least 28% in some studies) when used topically, and as it’s fairly small we think it goes systemic very easily.
Second, given we don’t know if things are actually safe or not, we also don’t have exact cut offs for when something is actually safe. I can’t do a study to say 9% glycolic acid is safe but 11% isn’t. That 10% number isn’t based on actual evidence. Along those same thoughts, would a higher percent be ok if you applied to only half of your face? What about if it is your body? Which trimester, but then what if you have your dates wrong? What if you have an eczema flare up and your skin is absorbing ingredients more easily? It kind of goes on and on.
Because of those reasons, if there’s enough reason to think an ingredient is unsafe, we recommend complete avoidance. There’s not really a gradient of this, it’s an all or nothing thing.
More on glycolic acid in particular in this post: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

    Hello,
first of all thank you very much for this helpful article. ❤
I have a question: I am currently using some the ordinary products that are not pregnancy safe. If I am to get pregnant in the next few months should I stop using these products now or is it enough to stop using them when I am first tested positive for pregnancy.

I am asking this because I used to take Isotretinoin before and my doctor said that I should not get pregnant until 4 weeks after the last pill.

Is this also the case with the ordinary products ?

    Thank you in advance !

Unfortunately we don’t have data that shows us when you should stop using things, as that would mean we know what levels in the body are dangerous and how quickly things leave the body. I agree with your doctor that I would stop using things a little in advance, and you should also start taking prenatal vitamins in advance too. I’ve heard anything from the day you start trying to 6 months in advance. I would probably use the 4 weeks your doctor mentioned as the minimum time.

I’m actually confused on the glycolic acid…so many articles and women have used it saying it’s fine and this was the first time,I see it’s not. I also hear it’s borderline and just depends. Susan Yara did a pregnancy skin care routine and she recommended the ordinary glycolic acid toner. So I’m just more confused than ever!! Haha

There’s some discussion on this in this post:
skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Glycolic acid is uniformly regarded as safe by a lot of people online, but it’s never been uniformly accepted as safe by doctors, who like pesky things like evidence… Glycolic acid is highly absorbed when used topically (as much as 28% in studies) and can be even more absorbed in certain skin conditions, and there’s no studies to prove it is safe. It has long shown up on many physician lists of things to avoid. Pediatricians and OBs get special training in how to counsel women regarding product/drug safety during pregnancy and nursing (I’m a pediatrician), and my list is pretty conservative. I think it comes down to who you want to listen to regarding information. I have no idea who Susan Yara is. I would recommend asking your doctor for their opinion.

There’s some info in here on when I disagree with brands: pregnancy beauty FAQ

In general, retinoids are uniformly regarded in the medical community as something that should be avoided in pregnancy. Avoidance during during nursing has shown up more and more over the last 5 years as a recommendation though i don’t know of any real evidence to say you need to do this. So I typically screen it out but say use of a retinoid while nursing is up to the person, depending on how conservative you are.

There’s no research about rosehip specifically (note, there’s very little specific research for pregnancy safety and ingredients, the study designs that would truly prove safety or harm are unethical to perform), but based upon what we know about the formulation of the vitamin A in rosehip the medical community think it’s fine.

Hello dear doctor, I have Keratosis pilaris on my face and I want to use Ordineric lactic acid for it. To begin with, considering that my facial skin is somewhat dry and sensitive and I also use azelaic acid, what is the best percentage to start with? 5% or 10% Is there a problem in the first trimester of pregnancy? Can you introduce me to a product that contains urea and amlactin to solve this problem?

    • 12.29.21
      Christine said:

The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA (listed here) is pregnancy safe and has urea. Amlactin is a brand name for a urea containing lotion. It works great, but is better for the body rather than the face.
I would start with 5% azelaic acid and ease into it. Pregnancy safety isn’t different 1st trimester vs 2nd or 3rd. If it’s safe in pregnancy then it’s safe.

    Hi there,

Why is glycolic acid considered unsafe during pregnancy? Most websites are saying it’s considered safe.

    • 2.16.22
      Christine said:

Glycolic acid isn’t universally accepted as safe by the medical community, it is highly absorbed (at least 28% in some studies) when used topically, and as it’s fairly small we think it goes systemic very easily. There’s no data specifically saying it is safe, and due to that many physicians say to avoid it.

        Hi again,
Thank you for responding. There are two different products with super similar names- one is the salicylic acid 2% solution and there is also the salicylic acid 2% anhydrous solution and they have different ingredients. The anhydrous one has squalene in it. I saw the regular salicylic solution in the list but I didn’t see the anhydrous one. So I wanted to check to make sure the anhydrous one was safe during nursing. Sorry to be confusing! Thanks again!

Hi there! Thank you so much for taking the time to write these articles. They are extremely helpful. One I am unsure about is the Borage Seed Oil. I have been using this on my face for the past few months and it has been helping with my facial eczema tremendously. However I did google it today and it seems like every other site states it’s unsafe mostly due to pyrollizidine alkaloids. Is that substance not in The Ordinary’s Borage seed oil? Just want to know the difference between your suggestion and what I’ve read on google. Thank you!!
