Pregnancy & Nursing Safe Makeup Primers

pregnancy safe makeup primers

As part of my ongoing efforts to share pregnancy and nursing safe products, today I’ll be sharing 3 of my favorite makeup primers. All 3 meet my pregnancy and nursing safe criteria, and they’re the ones that I reach for the most often in my daily routine. They’re pretty different, and I use them for different things. More on each individual primer below!

Note, pregnancy safe makeup primers are something that I get asked about a lot. While there’s a lot of great options out there (I have a big list of safe options at the bottom of this post, they’re all available at Sephora), you do need to be a little careful with primers. In large part, because this is a product category that does a lot of multitasking! Often they’re not just a primer. There are a lot of skincare ingredients built into these products, which I love! Who wouldn’t want to add a little extra hydration and tackle their uneven skin texture with one product? But that means you just need to pay attention.

My favorite things to look for in a primer are smoothing ability, prolonged wear of makeup, hydration, and a little bit of luminosity. Any additional benefits are a bonus!

All of today’s products are from Sephora. I found some of them because I was able to use my Beauty Insider Program points to get deluxe samples via the Rewards Bazaar. This is such an amazing way to try out new products! I also use my program status for things like free shipping. If you haven’t joined yet, make sure you do!

danessa myricks yummy powder

Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder

What is this stuff? It says it’s a powder it does look like a powder, and here I have it in a post about primers? Danessa loves to ignore the “rules” about products. Who says a product couldn’t be all 3? And that it couldn’t actually be formulated like a balm? (Have you seen her new powder setting spray? That product is another great example of this product category blending that Danessa ignores so well.)

This balm is great because it can be used so many ways that it is impossible to mess it up. It can be applied to skin alone as a primer/foundation (this is the universal translucent, but it also comes in shades and they provide a bit of coverage), as a primer under products, or over the top of products to smooth inconsistencies and blot oil. You can use your fingers, a brush, a puff or a sponge. I prefer to use my fingers for application, I barely need to touch the balm to get a small amount of product, and then I gentle apply to my t-zone and anywhere I want a smoother makeup application. Let it sit for a minute or two, and then apply the rest of your makeup. The Balm Powder gives my skin a satin finish, makes pores and other skin imperfections less noticeable, and helps improve makeup longevity.

dior backstage primer
DIOR BACKSTAGE Face & Body Primer

This primer from Dior has been around for years for a reason. It is super easy to apply with fingertips, has a satin/natural finish, and is great for dry skin. Like the Danessa Myricks, I give this a minute or two to set up after application before I apply any makeup over the top. It makes everything looks smooth and last all day. I reach for it when I want a natural look that will last morning to night without touch ups.

iconic london primer
Iconic London Underglow Blurring Primer

I started using this primer over the summer and it has become my go-to primer when I want a makeup look that lasts all day without touch-ups (which is basically every day), and when I want to add a luminosity. Which is also every day. It is formulated like a lotion, and while it looks pretty shimmery in the bottle and when initially applied, once it is rubbed into the skin your skin is just luminous without any obvious sparkle/shimmer (see comparison below with the Dior Backstage primer). I’ve started stocking up on this primer when I can get a deal on it, and I have it in my travel makeup bag as well!

Here’s a quick comparison of the Iconic London (left) and Dior (right) primers. The Iconic London is a little more liquid, the Dior has a slight gel consistency. You can see the shimmer in the Iconic London, but once it is spread out a bit, you no longer really notice it. It just gives luminosity without sparkle.
