I’ve been getting more questions about pregnancy safe deodorant and antiperspirants as part of my pregnancy safe skincare series. It can be uncomfortable enough being pregnant, but who wants to be pregnant, sweaty and smelly? Not me!
The first thing to discuss regarding antiperspirants is whether to use Aluminum Salts in your formulation. The biggest concern is obviously the “link” with illnesses such as Breast Cancer or Alzheimer’s. But… is there really a link? It turns out that there are a few studies that have linked Aluminum (not necessarily even in an antiperspirant) to those diseases. However, subsequent studies have not found the same links, so we currently believe the data is inconclusive. In addition, physicians believe that it is nearly impossible to expose yourself to enough Aluminum to see the same effects as seen in rat models. I found a good overview of how Aluminum Salts work in antiperspirant and the data behind the links in this post.
Personally, I used regular, Aluminum containing antiperspirant throughout my pregnancies and I continue to do so every day. If you don’t feel comfortable using Aluminum, then it is easy to avoid.
So, when looking for a pregnancy safe antiperspirant or deodorant, you really only need to keep the same guidelines in mind as when looking for pregnancy safe skincare. I’ve compiled a list of products that are fine to use.
How to Request a Product Review
This list is not an exhaustive list of pregnancy safe deodorants. This is a list of products that should be easily found or ordered online, hopefully they will make your life easier! Please note that many brands have a lot of different formulations, and many brands use slight variations on the same name for different products. This list is not exhaustive, it’s just a list of commonly found products.
I have now purposefully turned off the comments on this post. If your product is not here, please look for the brand in my list of brands that I have reviewed for pregnancy and nursing safety. If the brand is listed, ask about your product on the brand page. If not, please ask on the main brand page. Note, the brand pages are usually the most up to date, the round ups do not get updated routinely. So in the case of a conflict, the brand page should win.

Most aren’t pregnancy safe due to salicylates, but I recommend just spraying on your hair or clothing instead.
Thank you.. but wouldn’t it be harmful to inhale it then? I noticed that skit of perfumes contains cedarwood for example and it says to avoid it. But is that only when applying topical and not inhaling from the clothes??
It’s different when you’re just wearing it vs basically huffing a perfume. I never spray anything and breath it in directly (hair products, skin product mists, perfume, etc), I hold my breath and step away. Just breathing a perfume that you’re wearing should be ok.

Reading your blog, I found out that I used cleanser, toner, Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier that you do not recommend during pregnancy (all SkinCeuticals) and I started to worry how this can be harmful for my baby. I used these products last 4 months. Since I found out that they are not safe for pregnancy, I immediately removed them from my skin routine. The natural fragrance has a long list so please let me know if I should include that. It says this is >0.01% of the product. Of concern from these is benzyl Salicylate which it indicates is the scent of ylang-ylang.
