Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Mario Badescu

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Mario Badescu

Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.

Here you’ll find every pregnancy safe skincare product from Mario Badescu as of 4/5/2021. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. If they release a new product that is not listed here, please comment below and I will add it. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

Please note, it can take up to an hour to review the ingredient lists of each product. I review with my own list of pregnancy safe criteria. I obtain my ingredient lists from the brands and major retailers (typically Nordstrom and Sephora), and I review the US versions. Please do not ask me to re-review the same products over and over, I do not have the time to do so, and many people have been rude about this. For more brands, please head over to the list of pregnancy safe products.

How to Request a Product Review

I try to review all of the products that I can when I publish a list. Note, I am in the US and I only have access to US products. Please don’t be rude if I skipped your favorite cleanser, when items are out of stock sometimes they aren’t on the brand’s site, or maybe you are in Asia and I am in the US.

I reserve the comments on each post for reviews of product from that brand, this makes it easier for others to find products later. Please only ask about Mario Badescu on this post, I will delete other product questions. You can find other brands here. If your brand is not included, please ask on the brand list post.

I noticed a lot of these products have methylparaben is them, I thought parabens were unsafe during pregnancy? I would love to use these products but the methylparaben has me worried

Parabens are fine during pregnancy. There’s an explanation in my post on what ingredients to avoid in your skincare while pregnant. Parabens are certainly much easier to avoid now than they used to be, so if you are worried at all you can avoid them. However I do not screen them out during my process of deciding safe vs unsafe.

Hi Christine! I keep reading mixed reviews on other blogs/articles regarding Propylene Glycol and Fragrance/Parfum in skincare products under the “avoid” section when it comes to pregnancy skincare. I noticed that some of the products listed here have both ingredients and are considered safe to use. So I just wanted clarity on why that’s the case to give me a better peace of mind :).

Additionally do you mind reviewing the below product I have from Avene? Thanks in advance for sharing this wonderful content – love it!

    Product: Avene Cicalfate Repair Cream
AVENE THERMAL SPRING WATER (AVENE AQUA). CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE. MINERAL OIL (PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM). HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL. GLYCERIN. ZINC OXIDE. PROPYLENE GLYCOL. POLYGLYCERYL-2 SESQUIISOSTEARATE. PEG-22/DODECYL GLYCOL COPOLYMER. ALUMINUM SUCROSE OCTASULFATE. ALUMINUM STEARATE. BEESWAX (CERA ALBA). COPPER SULFATE. MAGNESIUM STEARATE. MAGNESIUM SULFATE. MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX (CERA MICROCRISTALLINA). WATER (AQUA). ZINC SULFATE.

I haven’t been able to find anything about propylene glycol as unsafe, it isn’t listed in any of the trusted sources that I have, it only appears on lists from sites like the EWG, and I do not consider them a reputable source, they are primarily a lobbyist group.
      This avene is fine!

I am new to the skin line and I love it. Sadly I have seen some recent articles surface about horrible side effects from a control cream that used to be sold by the company. There was a lawsuit and the product was discontinued. Are there other products like this in the line? Steroids in other products the company sells causing addictive skin responses? I look forward to hearing from you

    • 4.10.19

I don’t know of steroids in these products, in the US the ingredients must be listed and steroids must be labelled differently (as an over the counter drug) and none of the Mario Badescu products have steroids. I have never heard of an “addictive skin response” in any of my medical training.

Hi. What do you think about Mario Badescu putting Salicylic Acid as the very last ingredient in their Drying Lotion’s ingredients itself? Is that meant they just use it for a very tiny dose? It got me reconsidering again and again every time I need some spots treatment. But still, I know It’s not safe though.

I am not sure what your background is but I just wanted to clarify that Glycolic Acid is absolutely safe to use during pregnancy. It is an AHA along with lactic acid, same category! BHAs are not safe during pregnancy which are all salicylic acids.

    • 3.3.20
      15mins said:

I’m a pediatrician, a double board certified MD (note- pediatricians are specifically trained in product/medication safety during pregnancy and nursing).

Glycolic acid and AHAs are NOT universally accepted by the medical community as safe during pregnancy as glycolic acid is absorbed ~28% during topical use and is known to cross the placenta. There are many who think it is fine, but many who are calling this into question more recently in the literature. Note that this is always a changing process, as we can’t perform the appropriate studies to really prove safety during pregnancy (that would be a double blind study with pregnant women, it would be unethical and no research board would approve it). The thoughts behind other ingredients are evolving as well, such as the safety of sunless tanners, retinoids during nursing, etc. In large part, these ingredients are moving away from being considered safe and glycolic acid in pregnancy is following that trend.

My list is very conservative for the medical community, but given the controversy I include this as one that I screen out (I screen out all AHAs except lactic and citric acid). I do list the specific ingredients that I am concerned about in each product in case you are fine with those ingredients. More information here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Hello! I am so thankful for all these lists as resources! Honestly skin care considerations during pregnancy are overwhelming!

I think Mario Badescu recently added this one that I’m asking about-

    Azulene Calming Mask
Aqua (Water, Eau), Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil, Huile Minérale), Zinc Oxide, Kaolin, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Starch, Lanolin Alcohol, Talc, Dimethicone, Cera Microcristallina (Microcrystalline Wax, Cire Microcristalline), Cellulose Gum, Panthenol, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Seed Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol, Sarcosine, Chondrus Crispus Extract, Cera Alba (Beeswax, Cire d’abeille), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Polysorbate 80, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Magnesium Aspartate, Potassium Aspartate, Parfum (Fragrance), Propylene Glycol, Sodium Chloride, BHT, Citric Acid, Methylparaben, Benzoic Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Propylparaben, Linalool, Benzyl Salicylate, CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 45410 (Red 28), CI 19140 (Yellow 5), CI 42090 (Blue 1)

I think from reading your other articles that the Benzyl Salicylate will make this ok for nursing but not pregnancy, but it’s my favorite mask so worth a check 🙂

Hi! Are the products for not safe for pregnancy also for wanting to get pregnant or just while pregnant?

While trying to conceive you need to act as if you are already pregnant in every way, since there is a chance you already are pregnant and haven’t reached the point you could test positive. This means using pregnancy safe products, avoiding recreational drugs and alcohol, taking a daily prenatal vitamin, etc.

Hi! Thank you so much for this list! I’m at 8 weeks and skincare junkie!

Quick question: in other places you’ve said that all hydroxy acids are not recommended but the AHA & Ceramide lotion is listed as ok. I have used that moisturizer and love it so wanted to double check that the AHA in it wasn’t a problem.

It’s because brands will call out AHAs when they’re in extracts, but when you look at the actual full ingredient list (which is what i look at) they’re not listed separately. Therefore the product is fine.

I read that Propylene Glycol (found in the enzyme cleansing gel) and a few other ingredients are not pregnancy safe…is this true?

No. You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Special cleansing lotion o contains camphor. Camphor isn’t considered safe during pregnancy. I just found this after using the product during my pregnancy and am now very concerned. I should have investigated further but I urge you to update your list.

Hi! I clicked on the Ulta link for Mario Badescu’s AHA Botanical Body Soap and it looks like glycolic acid is included in the ingredients. Is that safe for pregnancy?

🙁 It’s a reformulation I think. It previously wasn’t listed, it was just extracts I think. I’m hoping to redo the entire list this week.
