Easy Summer Beauty Update: With Pregnancy Safe Alternatives!

Summer Beauty at Walmart

As soon as the weather gets warmer, which took a lot longer than most years in my part of Michigan, I feel the need to revamp my beauty routine a tad. I want lighter coverage foundation, higher SPF (though I use pretty high SPF all year), and a revamping of my makeup shades is in order.

For me, this seasonal revamp isn’t usually a big thought out change. I’m not online shopping for coordinating highlighter and eye shadow. Instead, I’m usually out running other errands and I spot something pretty, and I fully admit that I have no choice but to put that shiny pretty thing in my cart. I’m like a beauty magpie.

More often then not, this happens when I’m at Walmart. I have a Super Walmart less than 1/2 mile from my house, and it has a huge and amazing beauty section right next to all of the groceries. The beauty section there has the biggest and most diverse selection of makeup and skincare in my area. They always have the new releases, and some amazing exclusives. Walmart is always the first place I check for beauty products.

Since summer is finally here, I thought this would be the best time to show you what I’ve picked up at my local Walmart for summer. And whenever possible, I’ll share a pregnancy safe product alternative.

Sunscreen update

Summer 2019 Sunscreen Update

It should come as no surprise that one of the first products I update each summer is my sunscreen. I need a high SPF and a water resistant formulation. I spend a lot of time in the sun, so I need my sunscreen to be affordable since I’ll be repurchasing it so often!

Coppertone Glow SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion with Shimmer

I was so excited to see the display of this sunscreen at my store! Why hadn’t I seen this before, a sunscreen with shimmer in it? I admit that I’ve been mixing a little shimmer into my sunscreen for a long time (L’Oreal True Match Lumi Glotion is my favorite for this), but this Coppertone sunscreen saves me a step. There are different SPF versions, but I’ve only found SPF 50 at Walmart.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50

My 4 year old hates lotions and creams, and keeps asking me for gel everything. So when I found Neutrogena’s new sunscreen gel lotion, I knew this was a must try! It also has SPF 50 and 80 minutes of water resistance, so it will be perfect for swimming. I’ve already been using it while outside gardening, and it feels very lightweight.

Olay Sun Face Sunscreen + Shine Control, SPF 35

When your sunscreen is included in your morning moisturizer, you have no choice but to use it every single day. I love that this one also mattifies a bit, which helps to combat my mid-afternoon shine!

Pregnancy Safe Alternatives

Pregnancy safe sunscreen alternatives can be difficult to find, especially for the face or incorporated into your daily moisturizer.

Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30

This moisturizer is lightweight, doesn’t feel greasy and works really well under makeup.

Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Zinc Oxide Mineral Sunscreen, SPF 50

This is a staple at my house, my girls love the “purple top” sunscreen! We usually buy a couple of tubes every few weeks.

Drugstore Sunless Tanner

Faking My Glow

I’m one of those very pale people that will not tan, no matter how much time I spend outside. I use all the sunscreen to avoid premature aging and the clumps of freckles that will appear when I’m outside. To get a great tan, I usually rely on sunless tanners.

To avoid a streaky tan, I go for products that are not creams, I tend to do better with sprays and foams.

Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun™ Light Bronze Sunless Tanning Mousse

I love that this product gives you a hint of a tan as you apply it, and then later you’ll develop a sunless tan under the bronzer.

Australian Gold Instant Sunless Spray

For years I’ve heard that Australian Gold makes amazing sunless tanners that look very natural without any orange tint. I grabbed this can so fast off of the shelf at my Walmart! I’m excited to see if it lives up to the hype!

Note: I do not recommend sunless tanners during pregnancy.

Best Shimmer Drugstore Products

Add a Little Shimmer

I love to add a little subtle shimmer to my beauty routine in the summer. Just enough to catch the light and look pretty, you don’t want to overdo it and turn into a disco ball!

L’Oreal True Match Lumi Glotion

I mentioned this above, but I love to mix this shimmer into pretty much everything. From body lotion to sunscreen, BB cream… you name it! A little goes a long way.

Note, this is ok for nursing but not pregnancy due to a salicylic acid derivative. Try Neutrogena Glow On Liquid Face Highlighter as a pregnancy safe alternative.

e.l.f. Cosmetics ELF+ Dewy Coconut Refreshing Mist

Because the last thing you want during the summer is dry skin… This spray is perfection! It does seem to be out of stock online, but there was a rather large display of it in my local Walmart. So look for this in stores. Pregnancy safe.

Walmart Exclusive Eyeshadows

COVERGIRL Ascension Eyeshadow Palette

I grabbed this version of the 4 different CoverGirl palettes because I love the mix of light neutrals. I’ve found them to be well pigmented and they last all day.

Maybelline New York Lemonade Craze Eye Shadow Palette

This is basic 4 different trios in one, with some great neutrals, updated pink and red based shades, mattes and shimmers.. it is all in this little palette!
