Pregnancy Safe Body Bronzers, Makeup and Highlighters

Pregnancy Safe Body Bronzers, Makeup and Highlighters

Today I am sharing a much requested list, my list of pregnancy safe body bronzers, makeup and highlighters. This list is not exhaustive, there are likely more options in my list of pregnancy and nursing friendly brands. Please check there first if your favorite product is not mentioned here!

A note about why this list exists. Both active ingredients found in sunless tanners (dihydroxyacetone and erythrulose) are ones that I consider necessary to avoid in pregnancy. They are commonly listed on “to avoid” lists during pregnancy in the US, though not in all countries. More on all of this can be found in my post on skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. I will not review sunless tanners.

This list includes body bronzers, highlighter and foundations. There’s a lot of overlap amongst these products, so I’ve just included all of those in this list.

How to Request a Product Review

This list is not an exhaustive list of pregnancy safe body bronzers. This is a list of products that should be easily found or ordered online, hopefully they will make your life easier!

I have now purposefully turned off the comments on this post. If your product is not here, please look for the brand in my list of brands that I have reviewed for pregnancy and nursing safety. If the brand is listed, ask about your product on the brand page. If not, please ask on the main brand page. Note, the brand pages are usually the most up to date, the round ups do not get updated routinely. So in the case of a conflict, the brand page should win.

No, it gets absorbed into the body. It’s been well known for a long time, and that’s the reason why so many physicians recommend avoiding sunless tanners during pregnancy. More info here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

I’ve read online views that Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Body Makeup Lotion/spray are not safe for pregnancy as contain some ingredients that aren’t safe. I know you’ve included it in your ‘safe list’ and I just wanted to know how it’s different from a sunless tanner? Does it just sit on the surface of the skin as opposed to getting absorbed?

    Thanks heaps.

This is something that isn’t well proven in the literature and the opinion varies by country. In the EU and UK many say they’re safe. In the US most physicians say to avoid them, as we know they’re well absorbed. I’m in the US and I’m conservative about this. Why risk your baby’s health so you can be a little tanner for 4 weeks? It doesn’t make sense to me.

        Hi Christine

Apologies I posted a product on the wrong thread as I didn’t know this one was here.
I have Sally Hansen airbrush legs light and noticed it’s on the safe list, but you mentioned it contains
gluconolactone which isn’t safe in pregnancy? I’ve only worn it once for about 5 hours then washed off but is so handy to cover my pasty legs now summer is here. Is it still classed as safe as per your list above? I’ve copied all ingredients below. Is gluconolactone very harmful?
Thank you for all your information, I’m half way through my pregnancy and have used your website for so many products.

Avoidance is recommended. This argue is slightly different but largely applies: But what about this % of an ingredient?

    Hello!
Thank you thank you for your website! I know you don’t recommend self-tanners while pregnant, but is it okay to use them while nursing? I used to use the Isle of Paradise self tanning drops before being pregnant and I’m wondering if I can again after birth. Thank you!!
