My Pregnancy Safe Skincare Picks from Walmart

My Pregnancy Safe Skincare Picks from the drugstore

Finding pregnancy safe skincare can be very difficult, and it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking you must buy something that is labeled “clean”, free of every chemical you’ve never heard of, and of course, expensive.

Guess what? You don’t have to buy into that hype. There are easily available, affordable, pregnancy safe skincare options at your local big box or drugstore. To prove it, I went to my local Walmart and put together a full routine of pregnancy safe skincare products. Walmart is one of my favorite places to shop for beauty products. My store has a huge selection of brands, so it is easy to find pretty much anything I need. And I can do that while doing my grocery shopping.

It didn’t take me long to pick through the products at Walmart and find a lot of pregnancy safe options. The most time consuming part was deciding which ones I would be including in my routine if I was currently pregnant, because I usually had a bunch of great options to pick among.

How to Request a Product Review

I have now purposefully turned off the comments on this post. If your product is not here, please look for the brand in my list of brands that I have reviewed for pregnancy and nursing safety. If the brand is listed, ask about your product on the brand page. If not, please ask on the main brand page. Note, the brand pages are usually the most up to date, the round ups do not get updated routinely. So in the case of a conflict, the brand page should win.

The Core Trio

I think every pregnancy beauty routine should have a core trio of products. The trio should include a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and a sunscreen. I go into this more in depth in my eBook on pregnancy skincare (tip: it’s free when you subscribe to my pregnancy beauty newsletter).

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser

This face wash has long been one of my go-to favorite products, and it is a dermatologist favorite for a reason! It takes everything off, and it won’t leave behind any residue on your skin or strip your skin of moisture.

Alternative: Liquid Neutrogena

CeraVe PM Lotion, Face Moisturizer for Night Use

This lightweight moisturizer has been a favorite of mine for a long time. It features Niacinamide and a slew of ceramides. The Niacinamide is a relative of Vitamin B3, it has antioxidant effects, improves hyperpigmentation and can improve cell turnover. The ceramides are naturally found in your skin, and in skin care products they help restore barrier function and hydrate the skin without feeling heavy. I love this moisturizer under makeup, it does a great job of prepping my skin with just the right amount of moisture.

Aveeno Positively Mineral Sensitive Skin SPF 50

A quick and easy to use mineral sunscreen. I would use this one for every day, regardless of what my plans for the day are. Pregnancy is the perfect time to get Melasma, and a sunscreen is your best defense!

Alternative: Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Face Liquid Sunscreen SPF 50

Shopping tip: My Walmart keeps most of the sunscreens together in a sunscreen aisle, rather than mixed in with the skincare products. You’ll find a couple of daily moisturizers with SPF in with the sunscreen (none of which are mineral based, so they aren’t pregnancy safe), so head to the sunscreen aisle to find the mineral facial sunscreens.

Once you have your basic trio of products, you can pick out the “additionals” that get added to your routine, or swapped out, when a problem arises. Because skin issues change quickly during pregnancy (thanks hormones!), I recommend only changing out the additional products if possible, and leaving the core trio intact. Sometimes adjusting to new products can cause more problems than you are fixing.

Garnier Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Water

I’m a big fan of eye makeup, in particular eyeliner and mascara. I need a little extra help removing those each day, and a micellar water like this is a huge help! It could even replace the gentle facewash completely, though I like to have both to use.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum

For some reason, my skin turns to a desert during the second trimester. The serum is full of hyaluronic acid to help add much needed moisture, but it doesn’t feel heavy and you can layer it with the regular moisturizer.

Neutrogena Moisturizing Hydro Boost Hydrating Face Mask

Sometimes I want a super treatment, rather than adding in a daily product, to “jump start” my results. Here’s a terrific option to super hydrate your skin. These sheet masks are sold in singles, which I love!

L’Oreal Paris Pure Clay Cleanser

and

L’Oreal Paris Pure Clay Mask Detox & Brighten

There aren’t many pregnancy safe acne treatments available, particularly at this price point. I primarily used clay masks to keep my pore clear, as well as an occasional warm compress if needed. This cleanser and mask are perfect for the task!

Note, Walmart also sells the Mint Julep Mask I used while pregnant, but the L’Oreal was released later and it is a bit gentler on skin while keeping pores cleaned out. So today I would pick the L’Oreal over the Queen Helene, but this a personal choice.

Olay Mist Ultimate Hydration Essence Calming With Aloe Leaf & Chamomile

In the summer I love a good mist, and this one from Olay is great for cooling down, setting makeup, or just misting before your moisturizer to add a little hydration to your skin.

Pregnancy safe eyelash serum

Amazing Find: Pregnancy Safe Lash Serum

With all of the products I am asked to check for pregnancy safety each day, I think I’ve seen 2 lash serums that are safe to use during pregnancy. Ever. And of course, I have lost track of which products those were and haven’t found them again.

We all want long and lush lashes, and that doesn’t go away once you’re expecting.

Equate Lash Enhancement Serum with 3D VitaRush Peptide Complex

Behold, a pregnancy safe eyelash serum! My Walmart has a huge end cap of these, making it easy to find them. I haven’t tried it yet (I have a huge stash of serum at home), but at $15 a tube I don’t think you can go wrong with trying it out!

What affordable skincare products have found their way into your daily routine?

Hi doctor, first off, thank you very much for taking your time reviewing all the products and providing us educational advises on pregnancy safe products, it is very overwhelming to go through the list and make sure we don’t mistakenly use the harmful products to the baby.

I was about to purchase the Aveeno Positively Mineral sunscreen SPF 50, but I saw “polyhydroxystearic acid” listed, I remembered reading your post about the ingredients to avoid and hydroxy acid is one of them, not sure if its because they are under “Inactive ingredients” therefore it’s ok to use?

Also, should we be concerned if “silica” listed there as well? (I tried to google it but no luck, I did ask you silica question on the other post as well), just wanted to make sure it’s not related to salicylic acid.

Thank you very much for your times and helps!

Neither of those ingredients are ones to worry about. Polyhydroxystearic acid is a suspending agent, NOT a hydroxy acid, and silica is related to silicon, completely unrelated to salicylic acid. I’ve already screened the ingredients and know how to read the chemical names.

Hi – thank you so much for this website. I think I consult it more than any other pregnancy resource! I was just curious – what makes the Walmart eyelash serum pregnancy-safe when no other brand is? Thanks!

It’s the combination of ingredients, most others include prostaglandin analogues.
