Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Herbivore as of 3/18/2023. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

    Hello!

I noticed the Prism Glow Potion isn’t on the list – I’ve scanned the ingredients and can’t tell if there are any serious offenders here. Would you mind reviewing? TIA!

    Hi Christine,

I just wanted to say that I appreciate all the work you put into your site. I just found out I’m pregnant with my first almost two weeks ago and I’ve been scrambling to put together a pregnancy-safe routine and rather quickly as I’m starting to get desperate; my hair and skin suddenly started getting super oily this past week, thanks to the hormones, haha (also, if you have any recommendations for shampoos, I’d love to hear them). There’s just so much information to take in and there are a lot of ingredients on my usual products to research, so I’m really grateful that sites like yours exist to help with that.

On your page where you list ingredients to avoid, you mention that all hydroxy acids are unsafe or that there isn’t enough research to say that they’re safe. However, Sephora’s description for Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist lists malic acid as an ingredient and you list it as safe to use. Was this an accident or is the amount used in their product very little or something? Thank you so much!

      Hi there!
      A few things
      1) You don’t need to worry about shampoos unless you’re using them more like a treatment and leaving it on your scalp for a long time.
      2) It’s deceiving to look at the “key ingredients” on many products on sites like DermStore and Sephora. Often they are incorrect or they will mention things that are actually in extracts in the product (which other than Neem and Willow Bark don’t really count). In the case of that face mist, the malic acid is included in the extracts. It’s ok to use.

Regarding shampoos, I know you don’t count products with salicylic acid or salicylate as safe for pregnancy, but I was using T/Sal for seborrheic dermatitis. I stopped once I found out I’m pregnant (same for T/Gel and Nizoral). Would you still say I don’t need to worry about shampoos since I just wash it off less than a minute later, or do you recommend erring on the side of caution and continue to avoid these?

Also, I just want to be sure I understand your second point correctly. When you say key ingredient, do you mean that it’s the main ingredient, as in there is a lot of it in the product? And extracts are ingredients in a small enough amount that they don’t count? If so, I’ll have to pay more attention to how things are described or listed on labels!

Thanks for the quick reply! There are so many blogs where people leave the author comments seeking additional information or clarification and never hear a word; I’m really thankful about how interactive you are with your readers.

          15mins said:

I think the treatment shampoos like that most people do (and should) leave on for a few minutes and I would screen those for safe ingredients. Normal shampoos you lather up and rinse immediately. I tend to be overly cautious usually for these things, but that’s what I did when pregnant.

When I mention Key Ingredient I’m just referring to the ones that retailers will call out in their description of a product. DermStore calls these key ingredients, Sephora doesn’t always name them anything. They list ingredients that they want you to know are in there. But while they do this, they frequently just copy and paste things from other products and they’re often wrong, ingredients that aren’t included or something that might only be in an extract is there. I only look at the actual ingredients list. There’s only 2 extracts that actually really have enough to count, that’s Neem and Willow Bark (which counts as a salicylate). Others are variations of the active ingredients when in the plant, or the amount included is much lower and varies so much that we don’t count that. I hope that makes sense!

I try to respond to everyone, but it’s hard! A lot of comments get stuck in the spam filter, but I can get thousands of spam comments a day (literally) so I don’t dig through those. I don’t think that happens very often though, the filters are good at picking out what is a real comment and what isn’t real.

Pretty much every brand that uses Bakuchiol says it “works just like a retinoid” but I haven’t been able to confirm it’s actual mechanism of action. Until then, I advice treating anything with bakuchiol just like a retinoid, so avoid during pregnancy and if you’re on the conservative side then avoid it during nursing as well.

Bakuchiol is now listed as safe for pregnancy; will you update your recommendations to reflect this?

          Christine said:

No. I don’t agree that it’s safe in pregnancy. It uses the same receptors as retinoids and works the same way, there’s no reason to think it would be safe if it’s doing the exact same thing. Note, I recently added Bidens Pilosa to the same retinoid category as it does the same thing as well.

      Hello!

I just found out I am pregnant with my first. I make most of my own skin care and one think I use religiously is a tallow balm I make that has a tiny bit of blue tansy oil in it. I love it and I am wondering if I need to change it up for my pregnancy. I have read blue tansy is not good but I wonder if the concentration has to do with it. Thanks!

Hi there! Currently 12wks pregnant and I just bought/started using Herbivore’s Lapis Blue Tansy Facial Oil. Just a few days in. I noticed your “no-no” list included the BT mask, assuming b/c of the BHA/AHA associated, but what about the blue tansy face oil? Since it’s not just BT oil, but also jojoba and a few other ingredients, would you think it ok to use when pregnant? My skin hates me being pregnant and I’m always on the hunt for something to safely keep the breakouts at bay. 🙂

It’s because of the salicylate in the Willow Bark (I comment next to each product specifically what ingredient you need to avoid and I was concerned about). Note, I put it under the category of ok for nursing but not pregnancy. Blue Tansy oil itself is fine. My concern is the willow bark.
I have a post on my advice for dealing with acne during pregnancy.

Thank you so much for this amazing resource! Herbivore just came out with a new product “Hand Hero” – struggling to find a safe hand sanitizer. Expecting during covid is an extra adventure! Definitely hope this one is ok!

Additionally I saw that glycerine is rated “C” for pregnancy but I see it listed in many recommended products on pregnancy blogs. Can you speak to this ingredient?

    Ingredients:
    Grapefruit:
Aloe Barbadensis leaf water, alcohol, water, glycerin, hyauronic Acid, hydrogen peroxide, citrus paradisi(grapefruit)seed oil, Malia azadirachta leaf extract, melis azadirchta flower extract, coccinia Inca fruit extract.

    Lavender:
Aloe Barbadensis leaf water, alcohol, water, glycerin, hyauronic acid, hydrogen peroxide, lavandula angustifolia (lavender oil)Malia azadirachta leaf extract, melis azadirchta flower extract, coccinia, indica fruit extract, solum melongena (eggplant) fruit extract, aloe batbadenis flower extract, ocimum sanctum leaf extract, ocimum basilicum basil flower/leaf extract, curcuma Kong’s (turmeric) root extract.

    Thank you!!

Most things are rated C, it means we have no data. That’s pretty much every single product ingredient. But we don’t have a reason to think there will be an issue based upon absorption/possible interactions. But if you’re going to avoid anything with a C, then you’re pretty much left with just water. Just FYI. LOL

Both of these look ok to me for pregnancy and nursing.

There’s no Arbutin in that list. You only need to worry about it when it’s added as a chemical ingredient.

Is it okay that there is caffeine in this eye cream? I know that pregnant women are supposed to be careful with caffeine intake. You have it listed as safe for pregnancy and nursing.

This is fine for pregnancy and nursing. Note, I always screen with the brand website lists (they’re more up to day even than sephora), and note that I put the date of my last check of the brand in the post. I redid this list 4 days ago.
