There’s a statement on that page about always deferring to the brand lists, as the round ups do NOT get updated in the case of reformulations. I’ve just removed the product from there, but also verified that the statement is there (and it was). Only the brand pages are updated, it’s too hard to review all of the round ups. This is ok for nursing but not pregnancy.

Hi Dr, thank you for this website, It is so useful. Just a question about the PHA – Gluconolactone. Its an ingredient you have put to avoid in the ilia skin serum foundation and conealer. I was under the impression that this was even more gentle than lactic acid and therefore safe, is this not the case then?
It’s not a matter of being more gentle to skin, it’s something that is more highly absorbed than lactic acid and other AHAs and we have no safety data. It’s thought to work similarly to AHAs. Note, lactic acid gets a pass only because it is something that is already made in your body, so adding a little more topically won’t mke a difference.
Hello! You mention the Ilia Super Skin Tint SPF 40 is unsafe for pregnancy due to salicylate however it is mentioned on several other derm blogs by derms and OBGYN’s as being a safe product. Ilia says on their site that it is a mineral sunscreen. Can you elaborate why this isn’t safe? On your breakdown of what to avoid during pregnancy you mention salicylate but you don’t provide a reason why it should be avoided.

It’s something most OBs and peds say to avoid. Note, derms know a lot about the skin, but not much about the physiology of pregnancy/fetal development.

Hi! Thank you so much for all of the work you’ve done in sharing your knowledge! I recently found out I was pregnant and I took with me to the doctor my Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 with the ingredient list. My doctor said it was fine to use, and that the Butyloctyl Salicylate used topically (and under 2%) was not an issue during pregnancy. Then I came here to do more research for other products I’d just purchased, and found the Super Serum on the no list! Now I’m so worried. Is there any info/text you can direct me to that I can share with my doctor? At minimum I’d like to point this out to him in case he isn’t aware of the latest information out there! Thank you so much for your thoughts, I truly appreciate it! 💛
My list is pretty conservative, none of these things are straightforward and the recommendations are slightly different when you’re a pediatrician vs OB (I’m peds). And in general I can tell you that coming at your doctor like that is a great way to have it really backfire and have him feel attacked. My recs are overall conservative, and all doctors have different recommendations for what to avoid as there’s little to no actual information in the literature (the studies we actually need to do are all unethical to do, so we make educated guesses). I would likely ask why he feels it’s safe to use and he can explain his reasoning.
But Salicylates are pretty commonly recommended to avoid in pregnancy, my own OB recommended avoiding it 11 years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest. The 2% isn’t something I’ve heard mentioned for Salicylates in general, many people try to say that for Salicylic Acid. Note there isn’t any evidence to back that up, it’s mentioned as the % because that’s the max amount of salicylic acid you’re allowed to have in an over the counter product. The % in a product really shouldn’t matter, there’s some discussion here: But what about this % of an ingredient?

As their site states their products are all non-toxic and pregnancy safe. I took it upon myself to just check your site and see the it is in fact not safe. I actually reached out to them to inquire about this misleading info on their site and lack of transparency of ingredients on the actual bottle. Would love your thoughts on their response.

Butyloctyl Salicylate is used as a UV stabilizer in formulations where Salicylic Acid is used as a skin exfoliator or preservative. Our regulations team is not aware of any such issues when applied topically. For Butyloctyl Salicylate there are currently no regulatory requirements for special labeling in relation to pregnant women for topical use and the percentage in our Super Serum is 5%. The founder used ilia during all of her pregnancies and continues to recommend to those who are expecting. Please have a read as the things you read on other websites can be false, misleading and just give you anxiety! It is against the law for a beauty brand to give out false information. Ilia beauty is one of the most natural make up brands out there. (:
