My Favorite Touchable Sprays For Loose Curls and Waves

pretty loose curls

For a while now I’ve been obsessing over loose waves/curls in my hair. My hair does have a small amount of wave already, but it’s really only there when wet and it goes away quickly. Curling my hair is difficult because it reverts to straight. So, I use a lot of hair product!

I shared this look yesterday on Instagram. This was my quicky Thursday work day hair, and it took me less than 10 minutes to curl my hair. It looked like this pretty much all day, and today (Friday) it has loosened up some and is still pretty. I’ve found that the key to getting my hair to look like this really is a great finishing/texturizing/hair spray. I’ve been experimenting with a lot of different ones, and I get asked about these sprays by readers pretty often via email. So, I thought it was time to share the results of my investigations!

My Favorite Touchable Hair Spray and Texturizing Spray

After much trial and error, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are 4 sprays that work in my hair for this look. Unfortunately, 3 of them are a bit pricier, but at least I recently discovered a TRESemmé option that works! Right??

I usually prep my hair with mousse (still experimenting to find the best one) and a hair oil (try the Nexxus Oil Infinite Nourishing Hair Oil that I posted about recently). I then dry my hair with my head upside down (it adds a lot of volume) and then finally I curl my hair. I usually use my BeachWaver or T3 Twirl 360 curling iron. The last step is the most important for product, skipping a finishing spray really makes my hair fall flat much sooner and the results just aren’t as pretty!

Redken Wind Blown 05 (buy it from ULTA or Amazon): This can has quite a bit of oomph when you spray it, it really does seem to create a little bit of wind! It offers some hold, adds non-sticky texture and I’ve found it also adds some volume at my roots if I spray it there.

Kérastase Laque Dentelle (buy it from Kérastase): This is the option with the most hold, so the most real “hair spray” option. And you definitely need the Dentelle option, not their more traditional hair spray, that is too strong of a hold and not touchable. Of the four, this is the spray I use the most often. I actually recently stocked up and have 3 cans under my sink, and I’m continually hoping Kérastase will release this in a travel version. (Please? Pretty Please?)

TRESémme Perfectly (Un)Done Ultra Brushable Hold Hairspray (buy it from ULTA or Walgreen’s): Can I tell you how happy I was to discover this hair spray for a recent sponsored post? It’s a great substitute for the much more expensive Kérastase, it’s just a little less hold and a little bit stickier, but not by much. And it is much more affordable!

Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray (buy it from BirchBox, Oribe, Neiman Marcus or Barney’s): Oooh yes, this is the classic product. It has this very classic smell (which I’m sorry, but I don’t know how to describe it), which initially I wasn’t a fan of but now I’m a bit addicted to it. It adds some nice shine, a little texture and helps hold my curls all day, though it isn’t a hair spray. It’s a bit of everything.

So, after trying about 15 different sprays (no, I’m not exaggerating) those are my favorites. I’m still working on the mousse situation, let me know what your go-to mousse is! I haven’t found an overwhelming favorite yet.
