Anti-Aging 101: Anti-Oxidants

anti-aging, aging, 101, review, simplified, antioxidant, anti-oxidant
As part of my Anti-Aging 101 Series, I have decided to revamp old posts that describe different ingredient categories. I'll go over how and if these ingredients work. Not a lot has changed regarding some of these ingredients (such as anti-oxidants), but I'm planning to take advantage of the 2 cosmetic dermatology books I have in revamping these posts, so there likely will be some new info.

The involvement of free radicals in the aging process was first proposed all the way back in 1956, and it is one of the few things in anti-aging that is widely accepted. Free radicals have not only been implicated in the overall aging process, but also in photoaging, skin cancer and inflammation (which in turn contributes to aging, photoaging and some postulate skin cancer).

So, what is a free radical? How can you mitigate all this damage, and what exactly is an anti-oxidant?

Makeup Artist Juliana Landis Shares Key Wedding Makeup Tips!

Juliana Landis, makeup artist, wedding makeup tipsAs a bride I was more stressed about my makeup than my hair or even my dress (I can't believe that was 7 years ago today!). I did my own makeup, and while I wanted to be beautiful, I also did not want to look at pictures of myself in 15 years and cringe.

That means I wanted what most brides do: A classic look that was me but better, long lasting and would look good in pictures.

Luckily makeup artist and brow/lash expert Juliana Landis has some great tips to help achieve that stunning look on such the special day. Juliana is based at the Umberto Salon in Beverly Hills, where she does make-up, eyebrow shaping and eyelash extensions services. After looking at her site I can honestly say that I wish I had known about her when I still lived in the LA area, the Beverly Hills Lashes look amazing!

• Creating a flawless base that doesn’t look heavy or caked on is essential. To do this, Landis believes a good primer is essential. Stay away from shimmer as it doesn’t always photograph well and stick with a matte bronzer. To avoid unwanted shine, Landis likes to use a yellow toned translucent powder concentrating on the forehead, nose and cheek area. The most important step in creating a beautiful blushing bride is – blush! A critical step to avoid looking washed out in photographs.

Eyes should be as natural as possible to create a classic and timeless look that will remain in style for years to come. Juliana Landis likes to use a beige color all over the entire lid, with a taupe color in the crease and a sweep of peach across the lid. This color combination will give the appearance of a no makeup look. Eyes should be lined with a soft brown pencil, and if needed, individual lashes can be applied to add drama. Make sure to use waterproof glue, or better yet – have semi permanent lashes applied by a professional. These will stay put through the wedding day tears all the way through to the end of your honeymoon.

• To ensure long lasting lip color, Landis suggests using a lip liner a few shades darker than your natural skin tone and fill in with lipstick applied with a lip brush. This technique will hold much better than lip gloss.

• For at the alter emergencies, the Maid of Honor can keep a rescue kit with concealer, lipstick and tissue.

L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Primer: A Mousse to Smooth Everything

L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base, primer, review
I seem to be on a major primer kick lately, I want to test every thing out on the market! Here's another great one, this time from L'Oreal. While a tad more expensive than other mass market primers, the extra money does seem to really be worth it in my opinion.

This primer is not the typical silicon based primer. First, it is a light opaque pink, and it feels spongy. Very similar to a mousse. Truly. It only needs a small amount, I just spread a pea sized amount on my t-zone with a finger tip. Perfect. Wait a minute or so before applying foundation (too soon and it does seem like the foundation will slip off), but application is perfect with almost every foundation. Pores and fine lines are just eliminated, which I love! It does help with wear (pretty much all day with this primer), and it is somewhat mattifying but not to the same extent as MoM. I have found that this primer is a must if you are going to do the MoM trick for matte skin. Without it the primer great foundation application is pretty difficult, and silicone primers love to pill over the MoM. The L'Oreal applies beautifully as though the MoM wasn't even there.

This is definitely a primer that I'll be keeping in my makeup drawer permanently.

Kinda Obsessing Over Blueberry Body Wash from Tone

Tone Body Wash, review, blueberryYes, Tone. I know you see the bottle there on the shelf at Target or Walmart, and if you're like me you think "Oh, that's a Grandma product." Then you reach for a different body wash.

But, you might want to revisit that. I've been using Tone for a bit now (ok, long enough to have just finished a bottle), and I have to admit I'm somewhat obsessed with this body wash. It has a great lather, cleans everything off my skin (sunscreen, dirt, etc) quickly and easily, is lightly hydrating and rinses off easily.

Also, there are anti-oxidants in the formula. While most of them rinse off, some are likely left behind to help out your skin, which is especially helpful if you've recently been exposing it to the sun.

But the best part is the smell. It isn't exactly blueberries, more like blueberry pie. It's refreshing in the morning, but not too sweet. Even my husband comments on the smell if I've used this body wash.

Yay! Viewpoints names me "Best Quick Makeup Blog"

A cool thing happened while I was in Hawaii. Viewpoints, a leading consumer reviews site, named me "Best Quick Makeup Blog." Yes, likely this was in large part due to my name (I don't actually feature many "quick makeup looks", instead I like to feature products that work well and work quickly), but it looks like they really did their research! Quite a few of the other blogs mentioned were some of my favorites like my friend Tammy over at A Mom in Red High Heels.

Back from Vacation!

You may have noticed that I've been slacking on the posts for the last week or so. Why? Well, I went on an actual vacation. Amazing but true. The last real vacation my hubby and I went on (where neither of us was there for work or we weren't visiting family) was to Maui over 3 years ago. That trip was a disaster (I had severe abdominal pain that turned out to be gall bladder issues, had to have surgery when we got back, not to mention the drunk driver that hit us the one time I felt well enough to leave the resort). We thought we kinda deserved some time away, alone, and **gasps** without our computers!

So, I prepared some posts to auto-publish, we hopped on a plane . . .

My Current Lip Gloss Obsession: Clinique Black Honey

clinique black honey lip gloss, sephora exclusive, review
Clinique's Black Honey is like Nar's Orgasm or OPI's I'm Not Really a Waitress. It's one of those iconic, classic makeup shades that seems to work on a lot of people and is perpetually mentioned in lists of cosmetic favorites. Black Honey is usually found as the Clinique Almost Lipstick, a semi-translucent gloss-lipstick hybrid. Clinique describes the shade as "Deep blackened raisin", but it definitely looks different on almost anyone that wears it.

I had heard from friends that Black Honey existed as a gloss, but had never actually seen it in person or on-line. It isn't listed even on Clinique's website. I loved the Almost Lipstick version, but on my pale skin it was just too much, I knew a gloss would be better.

Well, I found the gloss when I was in Seattle last week! It turns out that it's a Sephora Exclusive, and it just hasn't been in any Sephora I've ever been to before. I snatched a tube up (and you can get yours on the Sephora website if you want it too). I couldn't wait to try it out, I was opening the box as I walked out of the store.

You can see from the swatch above that the color is definitely more translucent than the Almost Lipstick (if I can find my Almost Lipstick of it I'll post comparison pics, it's around here somewhere). It is a berry color but with a bit of purple thrown in. It's perfect for punching up my natural lip color. Something is obviously there, but it isn't too dark with my skin tone, it's just really pretty. Not to mention the gloss itself has great shine, isn't sticky, has no taste and lasts for hours. All of which are must haves in my book.

Milk of Magnesia: The Secret to a Matte Face?

milk of magnesia, anti-shine, matte, face, primerGetting a matte face in even the most hot and humid weather is definitely possible. It doesn't take a hard to find primer or a finely milled powder that you can only buy in Paris. Nope. What it takes is a quick visit to your local drugstore for Milk of Magnesia (MoM). Really.

I thought this tip was crazy when I first heard about it as well, but I looked it up on Makeup Alley, where hundreds of girls have written about it in product reviews and on various forums. There are also quite a few YouTube videos about how to do this properly.

I've been doing this for a few weeks. I bought Phillips MoM, but that was because the Walmart brand was out of every size except what appeared to be a full gallon. I didn't want a gallon. It's best to buy the Original flavor, but if you have to buy a flavor make sure that it does not contain Mineral Oil, since this can cause clogged pores and breakouts.

I apply the MoM as soon as my daily moisturizer has fully absorbed. Shake the bottle well and pore a small amount into the plastic cup that comes with the MoM (you don't want to get bacteria into your bottle, so excess from the cup should just be washed down the sink). I dip my finger into the cup and apply a small amount across my nose, onto the center of my cheeks and up onto the center of my forehead. Only apply to the areas that you get oily. I rub in until I can't see it, and then give the MoM a minute or two to dry. Areas that have too much MoM can get a white chalky residue, just rub this off.

You can apply makeup directly over the MoM, but I find that foundation applies more easily if I apply a primer first.

Using MoM has dramatically cut down on shine for me. Much more so than any primer, oil absorbing product or powder ever has in the past. I no longer need to repowder my t-zone during the day, my face stays matte all day long.

Anti-Aging 101: Ok, Really, What to do First?

Anti-
Aging, Aging, 101
Last week, I told you what dermatologists recommend you include in your anti-aging regimen. Sure, that's all fine and dandy. I even named a few products I've tried and liked to fit into those steps. But, should you really just go out and buy an entire new skin care routine?

No. It's actually much more simple than that.

Prada's New Infusions: Infusion de Tubereuse and Infusion deVetiver

Prada's New Fragrances, Infusion de tubereuse, Infusion de vetiver, fragrance, perfume, parfum, review
This year Prada is adding to their Ephemeral Infusion collection, and this year they are bringing two new additions, including their first men's addition to the series.

First off, I have to admit a bias. I kinda love Prada fragrances. I've had good luck with them in the past, and I like pretty much everything they release. However, I haven't tried any of their infusions. But, when I heard that in addition to the Tuberose, Blood Orange would be featured as a note.... I had to try it out. Mention a fruit note and I am there.

Feeling Coral...

I will be the the first one to admit that there are a lot of colors that don't work well with my cool toned complexion. One of them is usually coral. Which is why I was so shocked when so many coral tones from MAC's Pret a Papier collection worked for me. I have to say that I've been reaching for these shades over and over. The blush is especially amazing. The coral shade has just enough peach in it, and brightens up my face perfectly.

Colors here: Coral Crepe Paint pot, Fold and Tuck Lipglass, Instant Chic blush. They are all sold out on-line, so snap them up if you find them at your local counter!

Literally, I was fawning and gasping over an email. It's a really good thing my husband wasn't home, he would have thought I was crazy. I honestly said "Oh My God, I DIE!" I was about ready to put on my giant sunglasses (I have them, oh yes I do) and self tan my skin into a deep bronze.

And when you hear more about the product that hit Kiehls.com on Cinco de Mayo, you'll be fawning too!

Iman at the Met Ball 2010

Iman, Met Ball, 2010
I'm sure you've seen a lot of pictures of the clothes of the Met Ball that took place in New York on the 3rd. PR reps have started e-mailing information about some of the information behind the looks, and I had to share some of my favs!

I thought Iman looked fierce. Truly, there's no other word to describe it. Sam Fine created her look, which was described as a "Modern 30's Glam." While this was accurate if you take the entire look into account. For me this was all about dark smokey eyes that rather than being balanced by the "normal" nude lip, were paired with a dark red lip. The two balance each other quite well, and to me that is what makes this look so modern.

Skin: Every look that walks the red carpet begins with flawless skin. I start by using Iman's Second to None Luxury Radiance Liquid Makeup Enriched with Minerals (in shade 2) to highlight and conceal the under eye area. Then I uses Iman’s Second to None Stick Foundation in the same shade to achieve a flawless complexion that not only looks great on the red carpet, but lasts though the night!

After using Iman’s Semi-Loose Powder Enriched with Minerals (in Earth Medium) to set foundation, I dust bronzer near the hairline and sweep onto cheeks to add a luminous glow to the skin. Bronzer also takes the place of blush and can be worn both day and night!

Eyes: A smoky eye is one of Iman's favorite eye statements! I begin creating a smoky eye statement by using a dark shadow nearest the lashline and bringing it up past the crease of the eye, then using the same dark shadow underneath the eye to add drama and definition. Topping this off with a shimmering gold shadow on the browbone and lining the inner rim of the eye in black for added drama. And no red carpet face is complete without false lashes and a couple of coats of mascara! Iman Cosmetics Luxury Eye Defining Powders in Black Magic, Vixen & Bewitched are great for adding shimmer to the eye area.

Lips: I wanted to dress each feature of the face, so I lined the mouth with a deep brown pencil and filled in the lip with a bourdeaux shade of lipstick, Iman Cosmetic’s Luxury Moisturizing Lipstick in WildThing, to make the look sensuous, striking, and oh, so sexy!

My Daily Sunscreen Moisturizer, Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15

kiehls ultra facial moisturizer spf 15, moisturizer, daily sunscreen, spf 15, reviewI keep mentioning this product over and over and over. In fact, it was one of the first reviews I did for this blog.

I started using Kiehl's when I was a senior in college. I remember being frustrated with skin that seemed totally out of control. My combination skin was very oily and dry at the same time. I was having breakouts. I had tried a lot of different mass market products and nothing was helping. I read about Kiehl's in an issue of Allure, and hightailed it to my nearby Neiman Marcus (ok, maybe not so nearby, it's about a 45 minute drive to that mall), where I spent about 10% of my savings account at the Kiehl's counter. I bought cleaners, toners, lip balms, masks and of course this moisturizer. My skin loved the change. There was a marked decrease in breakouts and while my skin was still combination, it was at least no longer a study in extremes. I've been an avid Kiehl's fan ever since.

Sunscreen 101: How to Pick The Right One for You and Use it Properly!

Sunscreen, Sunscreens, 101, basics, how to select, pick, correct sunscreen, right sunscreen, use sunscreen correctly, right, sunblock
With so many sunscreens on the market, it is really hard to select one from all the masses to be "your" sunscreen. There are a lot of factors to take into account such as chemical vs physical ingredients, SPF, UVA protection, formulation, the list goes on and on. Once you've finally decided which product you'll buy, you need to make sure that you are getting your money's worth. Which means correctly applying the product so it can actually do its job.

Anti-Aging 101: Where to Start?

Anti-
Aging, Aging, 101
anti-aging, antiaging, routine, regimen
So, now that you know a little bit more about anti-aging, where does one start? There's a huge number of products out there. Do you need 10 treatment products? Should you include stick to the basics? The answers to those questions really should be determined by you. But, here's what a few little birdies (aka- the 2 cosmetic dermatology textbooks I own) say you should be doing to start off your anti-aging skin care routine. If you're interested in doing more than this or you want to be much more in depth it is likely worth your time and money to head off to a dermatologist.

What To Wear For The Rest Of Your Life: Really!

what to wear the rest of your life, book, review, style, french women, style secrets
While I know we'd all love to think that we look fantastic (and that we always will), the truth is that a lot of use get bogged down in the past. We age and time moves on... but the things in our closet don't.

The author confronts her closet in a huge number of ways in this book. Finding the perfect jeans. Figuring out what to wear to her daughter's graduation (where the ex is in attendance with his new, younger woman). She discusses how to solve these issues, how to flatter your body type and more.

The book has a lot of discussion, mostly revolving around the author's life (along with some anecdotes from other women), and I have to say I found her to be very engaging and often amusing. This isn't a fashion book, it's a personal memoir via closet.

Products I'm Coveting

I'm not quite sure how my poor husband puts up with me. I spend a good portion of my time thinking about, reading about or shopping for new beauty products.

I make him roam the cosmetics at department stores. He hangs out in the mall while I lose track of time for an hour (or more) in Sephora. On a recent trip I abandoned him in the terminal no less than three times to check out the beauty selection at different Duty Free shops. He just allows me to do it.

All that and there are still items I would love to get my little hands on to try out. Here's a list of them.

1. NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment: It sounds amazing. A sheer hydrating lip tint, with SPF?? And it's made by NARS? Sign me up! I'm looking at maybe trying out Greta or Lara.

2. Laura Mercier Secret Finish- Mattifying: I love Secret Finish. It's amazing- a little over your makeup makes everything look like it isn't makeup. I used it for my wedding, and a few special occasions since then, and the difference it makes is just fantastic. Unfortunately, I've never used it for every day since I tend to be a bit shiny. Laura has finally come out with it in a Mattifying version.

3. Bobbi Brown Cabana Coral Palette: Coral isn't a color that I usually gravitate towards with my cool toned coloring. But, these corals are somehow neutral and look perfect for adding a bit of a sun kissed look for even pale girls like me.

4. L'Oreal Paris Lash Boosting Serum: I've used lash products in the past with mixed results, I'm interested in checking out what this mass market giant has come up with. I love that it's about 1/4 the price of similar products, and the fact that it comes from L'Oreal.... Not that smaller brands won't come up with great things, but in general larger brands have a lot more money and resources to come up with great products. On my shopping list.

5. Stila Earth Day Sunset Palette: Need I say more? These colors look pretty universal in their flattering ability, not to mention that they will work for all sorts of looks.

Lanolips: Super Moisturizing Gloss And It's Pretty? Sign Me Up!

hydrating lip balm, lip gloss, lanolin, lanolips, review
It isn't often that I have to get a product from overseas. So, trying something out from Australia really makes me pretty giddy. (Going to Australia is pretty high on my bucket list. My husband is well aware of this. Using Australian lip gloss makes me feel closer to this goal)

So, is there a reason I'm trying out Australian lip gloss? Yes. It is actually quite a bit different from many other brands. Because it is different than many other lip balms/glosses. It's Lanolin based. True, there are some other products out there that contain lanolin. But, they don't contain medical grade lanolin (thinking about that makes me a tad ill actually), and they contain a lot less lanolin than Lanolips.

What is lanolin? Basically, after you shear a sheep you have to wash the wool. The sheep's wool is coated in lanolin, which is pretty similar to wax. After a lot of purification, that lanolin is considered medical grade. It's hypoallergenic, bacteriostatic (meaning, it can't harbor bacterial growth), and is so pure that we use it to help with wound healing in hospitals.

Getting the Perfect Hairstyle for Prom or a Wedding...

I know we all would love to think we can just show up at the salon fresh from our shower, and allow the hair geniuses do their thing and you'll look perfect. There is more you need to take in to consideration!
Latrice Strader, master hair stylist & owner of Washington D.C. based salon and spa, Destiny De’ve has a few simple tips to make sure your up do’s don’t turn into do up don’ts!

Down and Dirty: Shower the night before, not the day of your event. “Hair that’s a day or two old is easier to work with,” says Latrice. “When hair is too soft, it doesn’t hold curls or tease as well.”

Avoid a Wardrobe Malfunction: Wear a button-up shirt. “Some women are so distracted with everything else on their mind that they don’t think about the shirt they are putting on over their head the morning of an up do,” says Latrice. Imagine how you'll feel when you ruin that sleek up-do by pulling a t-shirt off. Just don't do it!

Think Total Package: You need to take into consideration what your dress and accessories look like. “Strapless gowns generally look nice with some romantic waves or loose curls hanging down, whereas dresses with busy tops would look the best paired with a French twist or sleek pompadour ponytail,” advises Latrice. Do a run-through by fixing your own hair as close to how you want it as you can, along with trying on your complete ensemble (shoes, bag, jewelry, the works), to see the whole picture. You may discover everything doesn’t fit together quite like it does in your head, and you’ll want to be able to rethink things ahead of time.

Don’t be afraid of hair accessories: Never underestimate the power of a well-placed accessory. If you see a piece in a store or magazine that attracts you, ask your stylist if it can be incorporated into your up do. Again, think total package. “If the rest of your look is simple, playing up your face with a stunning flower or sophisticated headband can add some high drama to your look,” says Latrice. But just don’t go overboard. You want one show piece that’s going to stand out, so don’t do this if you already plan on wearing an elaborate dress, necklace or other attention-grabbing piece. Simplicity is the key here.

Inject some personality: You should still look like yourself and feel comfortable. “If you always wear your hair down, maybe try an up do with a part that has some face-framing locks falling down,” Latrice says. “This way it’s similar to your typical look, but with some added glamour.”

Honesty is the best policy: If you are not 100% happy with your up do, don’t keep it a secret! “You may not want to sound rude or demanding, but your stylist would rather know if things aren’t looking like you imagined,” says Latrice. “They will be able to adjust the up do for you better in the salon than you will be able to do yourself at home.” As well, remember that an up do generally doesn’t look chic and polished until the very end, when the final spritzing and smoothing is administered.

Dr. Mukho is a fellow physician beauty blogger (ha! I'm not the only one!) and here she discusses washing your hair with conditioner, something I've never thought of doing. But, what I really enjoyed about this post is her description of what physicians go through to feel clean after taking care of their patients! I was cracking up- it's so true! I don't get sprayed with body fluids after a birth (I'm peds critical care, not OB-Gyn), but I definitely come home and scrub like crazy after admitting and taking care of critical ill kiddos that are infected.
