The other day I shared a great runway inspiration from the team at NARS. The look revolved around a great red lip, perfect skin, a strong brow and a nude eye. Today I thought I'd bring you a similar look, again from NARS, but here you can see how they've translated the look for "real life" including a bit less coverage with the foundation, a stronger eye and still a bold lip. Emmy rocked this look during fall's Fashion's Night Out (I think this pic was taken at Bergdorf's), and she looked amazing!
Skin: • Apply NARS Deauville Sheer Matte Foundation • Dust NARS Flesh Loose Powder over the skin for an extra-mattifying effect • Brush NARS Orgasm Blush on the apples of cheeks for a soft glow
Eyes: • Apply NARS Indian Summer Duo Eyeshadow dusting the left side all over up to the brow and the right side within the crease for a soft sultry eye • For a perfectly eye-opened affect, use the NARS Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo to draw a line from the middle of the lid to the outer corner finishing by bringing it upward a bit toward the brow • Finish by coating lashes with NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara
Lips • Line lips with NARS Salsa Lipliner • For an ultra long-lasting effect apply NARS Indian Red Lip Stain Gloss
I have to admit, that this look is a tad scarier looking when you look at the model above. Please ignore her Brooke-style eye brows. This look is not about giant eye brows! Really, look at her clear and glowy skin. The red va-va-voom lip stick. Then click below for the rest of this post, and when you see the inspiration for this look you'll understand why I picked it.

1. Comb LiQWD Catalyst throughout wet hair. 2. Dry hair in small sections to create volume and body. 3. Spray Elnett Hairspray all over head. 4. Set hair in hot rollers (really). 5. Once rollers are cool, carefully remove curlers from hair, then brush hair to separate and soften. (Note that the "official" press release said to do this, I think you might have better results if you use either a wide tooth comb or your fingers) 6. Spray with Elnett a second time to hold wave. 7. If desired, add a jeweled hair clip or accessory.
I have to confess that as an Allopathic (aka-Western) health care provider I have a built in skepticism when it comes to herbal medications, alternative treatments such as acupuncture and pretty much anything that screams "Chinese Medicine."
Once those initials M.D. went after my name (after years of incredibly hard work and probably a few hundred grand shelled out by my very generous parents), I became very focused on evidence based medicine. I believe that to claim something, you should study it in a lab and produce some results that someone else in a different lab would also be able to produce. Don't give me a little guy in a shop somewhere claiming that his ancestors took an herb to help their liver.
I remember in high school being a big jealous of the girls who used Pantene. I'm not sure why, I was blessed in the hair care department with a mom who "forced" me to use salon products (oh no! The Aveda!), and I loved those products. But I had a few good friends that used Pantene and they were girls that had great hair. I somehow decided in my head that Pantene=super soft and great smelling hair.
Which, it turns out is not too terribly far from the truth.
Exactly who is this woman? I kept seeing her and her name pop up over and over this awards season. I had no idea who she was. Turns out, she's the blonde that George Clooney fell for in up in the air, she's just a brunette now and I couldn't recognize her. Vera Farmiga actually looks better as a brunette the more I see pictures of her, and I really loved her Golden Globes look. She's truly just so pretty, there's no other way to describe it.
I remember well how stressful Prom season was. Will he ask you or not? Where did you buy the dress? Who even has time to think about hair and makeup?
Well, I thought I'd take a few laps through my giant backlogs of email (It's rather impressive how many thousands of emails I have managed to fully ignore in my inbox) and pull up a few looks that might help everyone out! For the next month or so I'll be showcasing a different look a day about 3-4 times week. It might be hair, it might be makeup. It might be from a runway show or a Hollywood event. Somewhere a pro took time to send me a pic and instructions on how to achieve the look at home. While I'm doing this for the girls preparing for prom, these looks would work just as well for another event, like a wedding. There will even be a few contests included in these posts, so be prepared!
As always, remember that these looks are a "jumping off point" meaning you can use them as inspiration to recreate the look on your own, use elements of the look (maybe you really love the cheek but not the eye) and that even the colors are just suggestions. If they used a rose colored blush but you already have one from a different brand or in a slightly different shade don't feel you need to rush out and buy the recommended one.
Believe it or not, I've decided to do Prom coverage! For the next 4 to 6 weeks or so I'll be featuring different makeup and hair looks that have been sent to me by different companies or makeup artists and just... hung out in my inbox. I'm sure they've been featured around the web since being sent to me, but oh well. Every couple of days there will be a a new look posted.
This year Clean & Clear is working with Gen Art, leading arts and entertainment organization dedicated to showcasing emerging talent, are challenging aspiring designers to create the ultimate Prom dress. You can help vote on the best designs on Gen Art, the top choices will be reviewed by a panel of judges from Gen Art, Clean & Clear Skincare and Seventeen magazine.
The winning designer will not only receive $5,000 but his or her winning design will be “unveiled” to the media at a high profile press event in New York City. As part of a national sweepstakes courtesy of Seventeen magazine on lucky teen will win the designer Prom dress and have it custom made just for her. Then, she’ll be able to show off her new dress at an exclusive Prom party thrown just for her, which will take place in her hometown with 50 of her “best friends.”
To celebrate the Gen Art contest, Clean & Clear has offered to sponsor a contest here on 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic! 5 (yes, 5!) lucky winners will each win a set of Clean & Clear's new Finishes Collection. This collection is a gentle, oil-free line of cleansers and a pore perfecting moisturizer that is infused with skin-perfecting minerals to give your face a perfect finish. Each winner will get the entire line (so, 2 different cleansers and a moisturizer), twice! Which means one set of products for you and one set for a friend.
The contest is only open to those in the US. Prizes will be sent by Clean & Clear, but only information of the actual winners will be shared, and only for shipping purposes. All other information provided will remain private. Enter gibberish for the mailing address if you want, I'll email you for that if you win, I can't take it off the form for some reason. :D
I know, you are probably looking at that picture saying to yourself, "what the heck is that thing?" I'll tell you.
It is your flat iron's new best friend.
That's a heat proof travel item that can protect your flat iron, your curling iron or any thing else that is hot. It holds everything (there are even great little pockets for items like combs and bobby pins) and then can unfold to protect any surface from the heat. So, you can prevent damage to your countertop while you use your flat iron. Or, you could even use it as an ironing board surface in a pinch.
Overall, this thing is big enough (it's about 15" square I think) to hold pretty much any appliance. It is definitely heat proof and the nylon is tough enough to survive the craziness I put it through. Which means the whole thing is tough. I loved using it recently to take my Fhi Go 1" Iron on a trip, instead of having to settle for my smaller folding travel flat iron.
I wanted to add that I HAD to have this purple after seeing my friend Michelle's pics of it over on All Lacquered Up. I literally couldn't find it in a store in California or Michigan, so I ended up ordering it from Sephora.com. It was well worth the wait! This is an amazing deep purple. Michelle's pic was a bit more berry, and that is what I had been hoping for, but I still love the dark purple with flashes of blue and berry shimmer.
During my blogging break, I was determined to find some great beauty items on my own, with no input from publicists, press releases or even other bloggers. I wanted to walk into stores and discover something amazing.
Actually it happened. See those 2 cans there? I discovered those in the clearance section of ULTA! It was a box, marked down to about $8 or something insanely low. Two cans. The box promised incredible volume and hold. It said to use Guts 10 Spray Foam on wet hair, blow dry, then curl and set using the Forceful 23 Finishing Spray. Big bouncy curls that last all day? Sign me up! That box quickly went in to my basket.
I love these cans. The products in them are amazing. The Guts Foam sprays onto your hair, quickly foaming up like a mouse. It is easy to control the direction of the spray, whether you want volume and put it on your roots or more hold and put it on the rest of your hair (I like both, so I separate hair and put it in a few root areas then spray it down the length of my hair). I use a wide tooth comb to distribute it evenly throughout my wet hair. I then blow dry as usual. Since I use this product on days that I plan to curl my hair I don't take the extra time to perfectly straighten my hair. I just get it dry, fairly straight using my paddle brush and I do a lot of the drying with my head flipped over to keep volume.
Next I set my hair with hot rollers. I know, it's very 1980's of me, but I love hot rollers! The curl really does last all day, and it's pretty fast to roll my hair quickly and let them cool while I put on makeup. With a curling iron doing the same look can take me about 45 minutes, instead of the 3 minutes or so to roll my hair. I use an older version of these Conair curlers, which I love for the different sizes available in 1 set. I use the medium and large sized rollers, dividing hair into about 1 to 2 inch sections depending on the curler size. Really I'm not at all scientific about it, I just grab chunks of hair based on about how big they need to be to set all of my hair without using the really little curlers. I roll the bottom 1/2 to 1/3 of my hair around the curler and then roll the whole thing up to hold the curler in the hair. I wait until it all cools down, then take out the curlers. I run my fingers through my hair to separate the curls since my aim is to have waves, not spiral curls. I finish with a few sprays of the Finishing spray.
The end result is a lot of volume, with pretty waves. I had my hubby take this pic of my hair from behind, which shows some of the waves. This picture was taken at 8:30 pm, and my hair looks the same as it did at 8:30 am!
Overall I'm very happy. I love this look. My hair has great volume, the wave stays all day, and my hair is actually touchable. It doesn't feel crunchy or sticky (it does feel like there is product in it, but I don't feel the need to wash my hair after touching it).
Probably no one is more surprised than me that I'm writing this post. Actually, my husband may be equally surprised. Growing up, this is not a store I ever went to. There wasn't one close to where I lived, and on the rare occasion that I was in the store's location in a near-by town I hated this store. It was crowded, the aisles were small and it wasn't as nice as the stores in my town. For years I've talked about how I don't like this store.
Flash forward to today. This store has just opened a brand new "Super" version of itself about... 1/2 mile from my house. Pretty hard to ignore that. I reluctantly agreed to check it out. If nothing else, I figured I would be able to easily pick up milk and other essentials there. I didn't have to like it.
So, imagine my surprise when I first entered the store and immediately was presented with a large, airy and bright cosmetics area. I was immediately in love. Shocking, I know.
Tonight I got an email about a new clothing collection from an unexpected store. The intro image was enough to get me interested to look at the collection. And I am in love. Seriously. It's classic American Sportswear, the silhouettes are classic but updated, and I even love the colors of every piece. This is a collection that reminds me of J. Crew or Banana Republic, and I want to run to the nearest location and try on most of the pieces.
Read on to find out where these clothes are from, and check out which are my favorite pieces.
Well, a few weeks ago I promised everyone that I would try out CoverGirl's ShadowBlast Eye Shadow and let you know what I think. This product comes in a fat marker-like package with a color at each end. Meant to be fast and easy, this shadow seemed to have really polarized a lot of on-line beauty addicts. People either loved it or hated it. Given my recent CG love (I truly think that Pat McGrath has done something to the drinking water over there, they seem to be able to do no wrong), I was optimistic, though I was nervous given the number of complaints I had heard about this product. My trusty CG rep sent me 3 shades to try out, the Silver Sky, Onyx Smoke and Tempest Blue.
First I tried out Silver Sky on its own. I applied it to clean lids (ok, maybe I had some concealer and powder on there, but no primer). The ShadowBlast is a tad oily feeling, almost like a lip balm. It does have some pigmentation thought not a lot. I had to go over an area 2-3 times to achieve the pigmentation level I wanted. I then tried to blend with a fingertip. Whoa, big mistake. Everything came off with barely a tap. I tried again. Same result. I wiped off my lid and tried over. This time I applied the ShadowBlast exactly where I wanted it without needing blending. I left it as is, applied my liner and mascara and went about my day. About lunch I noted that the color was a bit lighter, though still present and there was no creasing or smudging. A few hours later though things went downhill (a lot of creasing) and by about 4 pm nothing was left on my lids other than what had collected in the creases.
The next day I tried using a lid primer first (UDPP). I again applied the shadow without touching it, then waited to see what happened. It did seem that the creasing was decreased, though still present. The color stayed put a tad longer, but I still had bare lids by about 5 pm.
Despite the wear duration and creasing issues I saw after about 6 hours of wear, I did like this product initially. It was easy to use and it really didn't seem to require the blending I wanted to do anyways. The colors were nice and with layering I was able to obtain a more intense look (tip: wait a minute or two between coats to do this). The product was very easy to use, which is perfect for those that are intimidated by a more complex eye look. While it didn't last all day it would be fine for about 5 hours, which is long enough to go out to dinner or a similar activity.
I'd love to see this product in a more powdery version, especially if the wear was longer.
I didn't post anything from this year's Fall fashion shows, but when I got an e-mail last night with videos on how to achieve looks from NARS, I had to share! All three of these looks are very pretty and would work any time of the year. Enjoy!
Marc Jacobs
Dramatic eyes, perfect skin and light, natural lips. This is pretty much the look I've been going with for the past 2-3 weeks and I love it!
Face • Sheer Glow Foundation • Enchanted Blush (Summer 2010); try Gina Blush for a similar look
Eyes • D. Gorgeous Single Eyeshadow (Spring 2010) • Black Moon Eyeliner Pencil • Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo • Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara
1. Cotton papillon blouse: This would be great with a skirt or pants 2. Printed antique-ruffle top: Already sold out on-line, you'll need to look for this in the store 3. Cotton-gauze ruffle cardigan: So pretty over a cami! 4. Long beach cardigan: I see this as the relaxed version of the boyfriend jacket. I have a similar sweater in black with 3/4 length sleeves and I find myself wearing it every where, I should probably replace it soon. 5. Perfect Pencil Skirt: The only issue is that it doesn't seem to come in tall, so I'll likely have to buy mine from a different brand. 6. Classic ripstop Brenna short
With my recent trip to California, recent discussions at home regarding two upcoming trips for me, and then talking about travel to Italy for some of my family, it's no wonder I have travel beauty on the brain!
There was extensive discussion last week about what beauty products to bring on a long trip. Where to buy said products? Do you stick to the bare essentials or bring extra products like skin treatment products?
We all have our favorite ways to bring beauty products with us when we travel. It's up to you whether you want to decant your favorites into smaller sizes or splurge on all new small travel sizes. I thought I'd share a few of my favorite products which ever way you choose to travel, then watch for the big list of places to buy travel sizes on the web. Let me know if you have a favorite site!
I've been thinking more and more about Spring. I think it's the fact that it is no longer snowing many feet a day in this midwestern college town. It's been over freezing for several days in a row and I have hope for leaves and flowers soon! Which means that Spring clothes have been in stores for about... 2 months now (why do they put them out right after Christmas! I beg you retailers to stop this madness!), and most of what I want to buy is likely sold out. I will have to cope I suppose.
This spring I have decided that I want a more fresh and polished look. I've started looking for style gurus, and I've found three.
I admit that I love peeking into the makeup bags of my fellow beauty bloggers. The few times I've attended Total Beauty events, that's been one of the most fascinating things for me- visiting other bloggers and seeing what they've brought with them! This past weekend I travelled back to So Cal, where I spent a lot of time hanging out with friends and family (and I did some shopping, you can see my haul at the end of this post).
I thought that I'd share what I brought with me to California. I pretty much just pulled together stuff that I already have, though I have the advantage of my beauty closet and the huge numbers of products found there. While I was visiting with family, there was a lot of discussion about travel beauty products and where to buy them. In a few days look for a post about some of my favorite sources (this is for you Cathy!), and if possible I would love to make this a semi-regular feature on 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic! Please e-mail me what you bring with you when you travel, your beauty travel tips or where you buy your travel products from. I know I'm curious, I'm sure that others are as well.
I get a huge number of emails a day in my inbox, and there's no way I could possibly post everything that comes my way. But, I thought there were a few things that I should share with everyone.
I'm a blogging member over at Total Beauty (love them, I really do), and they've just announced their first reader awards! Head over there to vote on your favorite products until March 31st.
This is likely the announcement here that I'm most excited about. I've made no secret of my love of all things LashBlast (regular and lengthening, especially when combined!), well a new mascara is about to be released. LashBlast Fusion promises both length and volume together!

Spend $35 on Lancome over at Bloomingdale's and you can personalize your gift with purchase. You get your choice of 7 items from a list of 14. I recommend the eye makeup remover for sure. Do you feel like black lipglosses were everywhere this fall? And they are still around this spring? I really do. I've tried on black glosses from at least 5 different brands, none of them have looked "right." Even the more sheer versions, which in theory just add a layer of dimension to your lips come out make my fair skin looking very goth.
So, you can see why I'm coveting this new set from Three Custom Color Specialists. They created a duo that gives the wanted look, but isn't actually black, and it works for pretty much any skin tone. If you look closely, the lip gloss and translucent lipstick are actually a deep berry tone! According to 3C, "Noir (is) a seductive almost-black shade with hints of burgundy and plum. . . Stain pigments built into the color work with the natural pigment in your lips, making it unique to each user. One swipe imparts a very deep sheer burgundy; layer it for a more daring, edgy look."
Now, the real decision is lipgloss or lipstick? What do you think?
Noir at 3C I have no formal relationship with this company, I just get their consumer emails and like this product!
I go through phases of using lip stains. I'll have months where I want to use a lip stain every day, and then I'll decide I want a lighter lip and forget that I even own lip stains. I'm starting to get back into a lip stain cycle, and it's largely been sparked by Cover Girl's new Outlast Lipstain.
This super affordable lip stain (seriously, it's about 1/4 the price of my previous favorite Benetint) comes in a huge array of colors. It looks just like a marker and is just as easy to use. The stain is very forgiving and easy to just draw on to your mouth. I do "smack" my lips together afterwards to help evenly distribute the color and I'm set. The color lasts for 6-8 hours and is amazing under a translucent lip gloss.
I started out with a Flirty Nude sample that was mailed to me. I've bought Teasing Blush and Everbloom Kiss since then. I use 1 layer of the colors when I use them (better with my pale complexion), but you could very easily darken the intensity with just another layer.
I'm hoping that Cover Girl realizes what a winner this product is and keeps it around for a long, long time. It's my new holy grail lip stain!
I think I've received about... 5 samples of this eye cream. It seems to get sent to me from all sorts of PR reps (none of whom are directly hired by Olay actually, which makes it even more surprising). So, when I recently decided that I had to break a couple month habit of being lazy with eye cream in the morning, it was pretty easy to decide what to try out!
I admit that the packaging of this product is the main reason it appeals to me. Rather than coming in a little pot, this comes in a marker-like package with roller balls on one end. The idea is that you click the button, product is released and you rub it in to your eye area using the little rollers. They are called "precision micro-rollers", which to me makes a BB sound very high tech. I found them to be a little bit annoying and after a few uses just started skipping this step, instead using a finger tip to pat the product into my skin. The most difficult part of the packaging is actually the button to release the product. I think that mine may be very tight or something, because I have a very hard time getting product out. I have to really jam it down on to my counter top to release the product for each use.
So, as much as I might dislike some of the packaging features (though, I admit that the shape is better for fitting in my 3-1-1 bag for travel, so that is a bonus), this is a pretty nice, basic eye cream.
I am a lip gloss addict. I have lip glosses from pretty much every brand imaginable. They are stashed throughout the house, in all of my purses, coat pockets, multiple locations in my car and even in my office at work. In order to be considered "stashable" (meaning, good enough to be available at any given time and a worthy lip gloss) a gloss must feel great going on, feel hydrating, not be sticky, have great shine and not taste funky. Lasting a few hours is always a bonus, though I'm more flexible on that point than on others.
Most of the stashed lip glosses are from MAC. I've had trouble finding mass market lip glosses that fulfill enough of the criteria that they don't just get tossed out immediately. To be fair Cover Girl WetSlicks do get stashed and there were some lip glosses from Max Factor that also made the grade. Too bad Max Factor is no longer available in the US. I've yet to find a good lip gloss from the other mass market brands. I won't name them here, but I've bought and tried most of the glosses you can buy at Target or CVS and thrown them out immediately.
Well, Cover Girl's new Shine Blast lip gloss is one of the few mass market lip glosses to make it to my stashes. These lip glosses are light and feel hydrating on my lips. Don't let the super bright colors fool you, they are actually fairly translucent and just provide a flattering wash of color. The shine factor is good but not overwhelming (great for every day use), and there is just enough shimmer to keep me happy. The gloss lasts for a few hours as well. The best part? Watermelon Jolly Ranchers. I swear. To me, they smell just like the candy. The flavor is definitely there, though not as strong as you'd expect given the scent, which is good because I'd just lick it off immediately.
There's a great new website that I just had to share with you!
MySkin.com is a great new site that will recommend the perfect skin care products to you. Simply fill out a questionaire about yourself, where you live (obviously, being in Alaska vs. Hawaii makes a difference) and your skin type. The next step is putting in products you either currently use or have used in the past. You'll need to rate the product on how it over all worked for you and then on individual characteristics like smell. The system takes all of these things into account to recommend new products for you.
I think what I liked the most about this site was the accuracy of the recommendations. I put in the bare minimum of products (only 3), and it recommended what it thought would work for me. Many are products that have worked well for me in the past, which I loved! The recommendations run the gamut from Neutrogena to Clinique and even smaller brands like Boscia.
To join please use the invite code "15min" MySkin.com
Disclaimer: Nothing to disclose here, they told me about their site, I thought it was cool.... I have no formal relationship with them and get nothing from you joining this site.
I am not one of those girls that lines her entire eye with liner. I love eye liner on the top lid. On the bottom lid? Meh... Not so much. I remember reading somewhere when I was in high school that lining your lower lid was "out" and would make your eyes look smaller. That didn't sound like something I was interested in. My eyes are big, and I wanted to keep them that way. So, while other teenage girls were learning to line their lower eye, I just... wasn't. I didn't start putting liner around my lower eyelid until this fall.
What changed? I went to New York for a beauty blogging event and stayed in a hotel near Times Square. Pretty much I checked in to my hotel and high tailed it to the Times Square Sephora. They carry exclusives, and I had to find them! Which was a bust. Everything was out of stock. What I did pick up was this eye liner. I was intrigued by the idea that it was created just for the inner rim of the eye.
I finally broke out this eye liner about 6 weeks ago and began the experimentation. I am not the best at lining my lower lash line (I blame this on my lack of experience during high school), but I seem to be doing pretty well. I like to run this through the lash line itself and then a little bit onto the inner rim as well. I smudge using a MAC 266 brush and that's it. The liner goes on very smoothly and evenly. It's easy to blend out if I use the brush right away. The liner does not smudge later in the day, and it seems to last all day on me.
So, what is this about my husband? I've noticed that on the days I use this liner on my lower lash line, he says something. The other day we were eating lunch at Panera and he even commented directly on how great my eyeliner and mascara made my eyes look. Really. (My mascara was Cover Girl LashBlast and then LashBlast Lengths over that.)
I've been using the black eye liner, but on my next Sephora trip I'll likely be picking up the white to play with as well.
