My New Mass Market Beauty Go-To Store....

Probably no one is more surprised than me that I'm writing this post. Actually, my husband may be equally surprised. Growing up, this is not a store I ever went to. There wasn't one close to where I lived, and on the rare occasion that I was in the store's location in a near-by town I hated this store. It was crowded, the aisles were small and it wasn't as nice as the stores in my town. For years I've talked about how I don't like this store.

Flash forward to today. This store has just opened a brand new "Super" version of itself about... 1/2 mile from my house. Pretty hard to ignore that. I reluctantly agreed to check it out. If nothing else, I figured I would be able to easily pick up milk and other essentials there. I didn't have to like it.

So, imagine my surprise when I first entered the store and immediately was presented with a large, airy and bright cosmetics area. I was immediately in love. Shocking, I know.

What store is this?

Believe it or not, I'm talking about Walmart. Truly. I took those pictures from my "hidden camera" (I walked around my store with my iPhone hidden in my jacket!), and you can see why I like it. The aisles are wide. Everything is well stocked. I have yet to be there when a Walmart employee is not checking the area and refilling things. Notice the person in the blue shirt there? That is what he is doing. But, he isn't taking up the whole aisle with a cart. He is looking for things to restock, then running to a hidden area and coming back with stuff. I love the "wood" floor (true, it's wood colored linoleum, but it's a nice change from the cement floor). There are a ton of sky lights in this store, and there are more in this area and the lighting is somehow even better.

Notice the display areas. They aren't crowded. Brands are clumped together and organized logically in attractive displays. The products are well edited (meaning, they didn't just arrange for every "cheap" brand to be here), and the brands that are available each have their own great display area with a a great selection of products. When I bought my Almay Smart Shade I wanted a matching Almay powder. Turns out that CVS, Walgreens, Target and Meijer in my area all carry the brand. But, none of them have powder (how is this possible??). Walmart has 3 kinds of powder from Almay. They carry the entire Olay line, including the hard to find Olay Micro-Sculpting Cream (other stores have this product, but they are always out of stock). They even have about twice as many CoverGirl lipsticks as other stores. So, if you need a specific shade, I'd check here first.

So, it might be time to break out of your Target routine.

Walmart has sent me a few items to sample. Strangely, it turned out most of the items they sent were ones I had already reviewed. Like that Micro-Sculpting Cream.

Please note that I'm not going to publish comments about how Walmart is a horrible company, they don't have unions, blah blah blah. My store is big and new and seems to employ a lot of people. That's good in my book. I like to shop there now. Also good. That's all.

I wish my Wal-Mart was this nice! You're so lucky! I've lived in FL, CA, and VA all within the past 3 years (my hubby is a Navy guy) and I've found that they are different everywhere. Where I lived in FL they were awesome like this, but my local Wal-Mart in CA was horrendous. Here in VA it is just so-so. I will be hoping they get better, I totally know what you mean and it's so refreshing to visit one of the nice ones!

When it comes to buying drugstore makeup, I check out Walmart, Target, CVS, and Walgreens. You need to try Walgreens, the new stores are really lovely and they have insane deals.

I am so not against shopping at Walmart! I don't have one in my city, but I always check out the cosmetics aisle when I'm visiting my folks.
