Fall Shopping 2009 at Banana Republic

This fall Banana Republic seems to be all about draping and pleating. A little bit more lady like than they usually are. This is great for me (I see a lot I can wear to work), but I do wish the casual clothes had a bigger selection.

I'd shop at Banana very frequently this fall, they seem to be going crazy with sales!

Neutrogena's Rapid Clear Cleanser

Neutrogena Rapid Clear Cleanser review
During my recent cross country move I was having some skin issues. I'm not sure if it was just sitting in the car for three days on end, washing my face in a different Holiday Inn everynight, but by the end of our drive my skin was a disaster. I was oily, had dry flaky patches and my face had more clogged pores than I've had at any time since high school. I was running out of face wash as well, so I decided that it was time for a shakeup. I decided I would address the clogged pores with my cleanser and concentrate on increasing my exfoliation to help with the flakes.

Anyways, I hightailed it to the Meijer beauty section once I arrived here in the midwest. (Meijer is like a Super Walmart, but owned by a family in Grand Rapids Michigan. They're open 24/7 except Christmas and they sell everything. I missed them in California!) After perusing the options, I settled on this cleanser from Neutrogena. I love the brand and the idea of an oil control cleanser (without the added acne fighters that dry me out) was perfect.

Overall I really loved this cleanser. Honestly, it does smell just a bit medicinal. It's pretty thick and creates a nice lather. It is perfect for pairing with my Clarisonic since the cleanser stays put on the bristles and doesn't wash away too easily. The cleanser overall does a great job, cleaning away makeup quickly and easily (though keep it away from your eyes, it will sting and it doesn't really remove mascara). The cleanser didn't overly dry my skin and I had no irritation. Within just a day or two my skin was looking better and my pores were clearer.

This is definitely a cleanser I would buy again!

Fall Shopping 2009 at Neiman Marcus

Honestly, Neiman's is a store I don't often shop at. They tend to be out of my price range, though I like their mix of classic and trendy styles! Now that I have a "real" job hopefully I'll get to actually use the Neiman's card on occasion!

This season I found a lot of great options at Neiman's. Read on to see what I loved!

Phillip Lim Spring 2010 Look

Phillip Lim's collection was inspired by the late works of Picasso and the Cubism period. For me the look was about the bronze lids with perfect skin, nude lips and check out the hair! I love the side buns. Very chic and understated.

This look was created by Lisa Butler for NARS Cosmetics and has a lot of different textures in the look: Matte, Sheer, iridescent shimmer.... Over all it's a look I love. They did use a lot of unreleased items to create the look, so I'll be coming back to this in the spring.

Face:
• Mix a small amount of NARS Concealer with NARS Hydrating Moisture Cream to apply just around the nose forehead and cheeks
• Blend NARS Luxor Multiple (NEW for Holiday 2009) with a foundation brush to the cheekbone moving down diagonally toward the lips and adding a little bit onto the lips for subtle highlights

Eyes:
• Apply the golden moss side of NARS Camargue Duo Eyeshadow (NEW for Spring 2010) all over the eye filling in the crease with the sienna side
• Depending on skin tone, apply NARS Mousson Cream Eyesahdow (NEW for Holiday 2009) to adjust the color on the lid
• Using a NARS Smudge Brush apply D.Gorgeous Eyeshadow (NEW for Spring 2010) to the lower lash line adding intensity as need be (“It’s not a heavy liner, but it shows some color,” explained Lisa Butler)
• Apply one coat of NARS Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara to the top lashes

Lips:
• Add a swipe of NARS Cruising Lipstick (NEW for Spring 2010) and some NARS Luxor Multiple (NEW for Holiday 2009) to a NARS Retractable Lip Brush and dab lightly onto the lips starting in the middle and working your way out

Finish:
• Apply NARS Orgasm Illuminator (NEW for Spring 2010) to the face, concentrating on the cheekbones
• Reapply both shades from NARS Camargue Duo Eyeshadow to the brow bones

A Vegan Option For Dry Hair!

vegan shampoo
While I'm not vegan, I've heard from many vegan friends and readers that it can be hard to find beauty products. Even if they do manage to find them, the products are often . . . Well, let's just say not so great. So, when I heard that White Sands (one of my favorite hair care companies) was coming out with a new set of hydrating shampoo and conditioner, and that it would be vegan, you know I had to try them out!

Overall, I really liked these products. They have a light scent, the shampoo has a nice lather and rinses out very easily. The conditioner is creamy and definitely hydrating though not overly so for a daily conditioner. My hair looked healthy and was easy to style after using these products. Definitely better than a lot of the other vegan options out there!

Fall Shopping 2009 at Eddie Bauer

I had promised to share my finds for Fall 2009 with you, and here I've been doing shopping (not a lot yet, but I'm working on it!), but I haven't been sharing!

So, over the next 1-2 weeks I'll show you what I've been looking at from my favorite stores. Let me know what you think, and if you've found anything great as well!

The first stop was a little bit surprising to me because while my husband frequently shops there, I rarely find much. Eddie Bauer. Really. I got a catalog in the mail and was told to look at it by him, as he thought there was a lot in it that was perfect for me. I think I dog earred about half of the catalog! I've made some purchases already, I'm waiting a few weeks now for more to arrive in store.

Harajuku Lovers as Snowbunnies!

I love the Harajuku fragrances, from their cute plastic bobble-headed bottles to the fun and flirty fragrances found inside. All five of the girls are dressed up for winter in limited edition bottles. I can't guarantee that they'll still be around at Christmas time, so you might want to pick a few up now!

Great Drugstore Find: Physician Formula Eye Shadows

When I saw how cool this new palette was from Physician's Formula, I had to share! I know that it's likely been in stores for a bit, but I just found it.

The product is called Shimmer Strips, and you can see that really it's a big brick of 9 different eye shadows. They come in different shades meant to enhance your eye color (this the Bronze set to enhance brown eyes), but you could definitely use a different eye color's set if you wanted. The idea is that each set of 3 shadows is used together to create a look. Going from the lighter shades to the darker shades, that's the "day", "playful" or "night" look. Use the medium shade over the lid, the lightest shade over your brow bone and the darkest shade in the crease of the eye or as a liner.

I found these shadows to be really pretty. They had great shimmer and depth (the pictures later show most of that, but in person they are better) and they are pretty well pigmented for a drugstore product. The shadows blend well and lasted most of a day without shadow primer.

They've also come out with this neat (and super portable) companion product. They call it a 3-in-1, really it's a stick with 2 different ends. The shadows that come out are very easy to blend, and you can use them as a highlighter, a shadow or a liner. Perfect for in your gym bag or for travel! They blend easily at first but are pretty smudge-proof later on and seem to last most of the day.

Read on for swatches....

The Purple Mani I Can't Get Enough Of

I love nail polish. I've made no secret of this. I was once a very active poster on the Makeup Alley Nailboard, and that's where I met my friend Michelle from All Lacquered Up. (True, we talk a lot more about beauty blogging and I get to hang out with her at Fashion Week, but our first bonding was over polish) I can't rival her polish collection, but I have well over 300 shades myself. Over the past year or so I've really been attracted to dark vampy shades, and my favorite of those are either berry toned or purple. They tend to go great with my super pale skin and short nails.

I have to admit that of those 300 polishes, I only own about 2 or 3 Estée Lauder polishes. This isn't a quirk, I just haven't had great luck with their formula (I avoid other brands too, usually Chanel and YSL have even less staying power on my nails than Estée).

So, taking all of that into consideration, I couldn't resist trying out the Blackened Amethyst color that Estée released with their Sensuous Gold collection this fall. The shade is amazing. It is a dark matte purple with a little bit of a berry leaning. In the right light it looks more berry than purple, which I love. The brush is wide and makes for easy application, the polish is almost one coat color and it applies like a dream.

The formula seems to be a bit different than the last time I tried it out. With a good base coat (my favorites are Orly Bonder or CND Stickey) and top coat (Seche Vite or Poshe) I am getting 3-4 days of chip free wear out of a manicure which is a big improvement over the 1-2 days I once got from Estée Lauder (note, I know other people that have 1 week manis easily with this formula, it seems to just not like me as much, I'm not sure why). It isn't up to the 7-9 days of chip free wear that I can get with a OPI, Essie or China Glaze manicure. But I don't seem to care.

Despite the shorter wear time on me, I keep reaching for this color over and over. I can't help it. I must have about 30 other dark purples I could do a manicure with, but I've done about 8 or 9 manicures with Blackened Amethyst since I got it. If you like vampies you might want to check out this shade!

Christian Siriano Spring 2010 Look

I'm betting that about 90% of my readers are as big fans as I am of Christian Siriano. His fierceness definitely kept me entertained while he was on Project Runway, and I was happy to see that he was not only showing at Fashion Week, but has also come out with his own line of makeup with Victoria's Secret!

Read on to see what his models looked like on the runway.

Tibi Spring 2010 Look

This isn't a look I would usually showcase (I try to be a bit more "wearable", meaning that people won't look at you funny if you try out the look). But, I couldn't help but be tickled by the pictures I saw of Bobbi with bright colors! I had to share just for that. She created a bright vibrant electric pink eye with hints of yellow and green, contrasted with a nude lip.

Skin: Hydrating Face Cream ($50), Hydrating Eye Cream ($45), Foundation Stick ($40), Creamy Concealer ($22), Corrector ($22)

Eyes:* Bright yellow eye shadow under brow and bright pink coral on lid (Bobbi Brights Palette); Black Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner on top lid ($21), bright green liner along bottom lash line (Bobbi Brights Palette); multiple layers of Extreme Party Mascara ($22) on top and bottom lashes
* To recreate this runway look in reality, use a softer pink eye shadow, like Baby Pink ($22) on eyes, and Long-Wear Gel Liner in Black Ink or Black Plum Ink ($22)

Cheeks: Coral Pot Rouge (Spring ’10, $22), placed high on cheek bone

Lips: Nude

Brows: Softly defined

Buns that Stay Put: A Tip From the Runway

A low, classic bun is always a favorite on the runways in New York. It is simple and elegant, and chances are that many of you will be trying out this look for events this upcoming holiday season.

But, there's a problem. Most of us can't get our buns to look like the one above. It was created by Celebrity hair stylist, Philip Pelusi and his Tela design team for Caroline Seikaly’s Spring 2010 show. Instead, I tend to get hair that looks like that for about... 10 minutes. And then it falls down.

Read on to find out how to get hair to stay put!

And you need to go and join Ideeli now because they'll be doing a giveaway a select number of gift bags that will include Lifting Firming Day Cream SPF15, Ultra Correction Lift Sculpting Firming Concentrate, Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Parfum and more! The giveaway will be in a very short time and only members can win it.

Join Ideeli Now!

So, what exactly is this stuff? I actually was able to meet with Chanel reps when in New York a few weeks ago and learned all about it. It was created with the assistance of Dr. Don Ingber, a professor at Harvard. In a strange twist of fate, this is the second professor that I've heard about developing a high end product in the last 6 months (the other was Dr. Bob Langer and Living Proof) that my husband knows. Both of these guys actually do BioMedical Engineering research in a very related field to my husband. (At this point the real question is when is my professor going to collaborate with Chanel???)

Anyways, Chanel Ultra Correction Lift is amazing stuff. To create it, they decided to think of the cell like a structure, which it really is. It has it's own little micro-structure to hold it up and together, and it changes with time and in response to the environment.

You can very basically model the tissue's architecture with the tensegrity model, which is that little thing pictured above. Even though it just looks like a jumble of sticks held together by elastic. The "stiff" part of the model is collagen and the elastics are elastin, they are held together by tensin. Together they hold up the cell and hold it together. Unfortunately with time the tensin breaks down and the structure can fall down partially or even be destroyed.

Luckily Chanel found a botanical that dramatically increases tensin production. Over time users had improved tone, firmness and reduced signs of aging.

It's definitely on my list of things that I'm yearning for. I'll be entering the contest, will you?

Jason Wu Spring 2010 Look

Of all the Spring 2010 shows, the intricate updos created by Aveda at Jason Wu (check out the collection at Style.com) were definitely my favorite. Honestly, these are not updos that you could create on your own for a night out. I actually wouldn't even recommend having someone else do this for you unless it's a very special occasion.

But, I could definitely see a version of this working for a wedding. I'd be clipping all of this pictures for my "idea" file if I was still engaged.

By Lauren Luke is Heading to Sephora!

It's the rare person on You Tube that can become an internet sensation. But, that's certainly what happened to Lauren Luke (Panacea81) who is a single mom in the UK. Lauren just happens to be able to look at any celeb look and create very easy to follow, in depth tutorials that anyone can follow.

This tutorial shows you how to achieve the look seen in the Paramore video, Ignorance, a great smokey eye look.

Lauren's huge following (56 million views and 277,000 followers) has resulted in a makeup line, a book due out October 1st and even a Nintendo DS game, coming out October 9th. Really.

She also has a line of makeup that is now going to be available at Sephora. The line is available in kits, each of which have primers, eye shadows, eye liners and lippies in the palette. They all come with a sheer pink gloss as well.

Personally I'm really looking forward to seeing these products in person. I'm off to watch some You Tube!

Yigal Azrouël Spring 2010 Look

For spring 2010 Yigal Azrouël created a very deconstructed, feminine look (if you're not sure what I mean, check out the collection). To complement the look the Aveda team created a edgy knot of hair and Bobbi Brown (love her!) created the perfect complexion and a smudged smokey eye that balances the look perfectly. Overall it's a great look!

Read on to see how they did it. Also, notice Bobbi's nail polish. It looks amazing, I'm going to have to figure out what color that is.

How to Get the Most Out of The Skincare Products You're Using

How do you know if you're applying all of those serums, gels and lotions in the right order? Because putting them on incorrectly could mean poor absorption of that expensive serum, which just means money down the drain. Honestly, this is something that even doctors get confused about.

Skincare products are different than the drugs that I prescribe my patients every day. Typically I am dealing with only 2 different routes of delivery- Oral vs Intravenous. So, I usually only have to think about how well the stomach/intestine will absorb something.

However, skincare (and topical drugs for the skin) have many different formulations. Serums, gels, lotions.... they all absorb into the skin differently in terms of depth and time period. In fact, it is the formulation (or as Dr. Schultz calls it, the vehicle) that is much more important than even the percent active ingredient.

Dr. Schultz's newest video over on DermTV is a great explanation of this problem. I hope it helps relieve some confusion!

My Favorite Eye Palettes for Fall 2009

I am a big sucker for eye shadow palettes. I need to buy at least two or three every season. It's a sickness and has caused me to have lack of storage space. This fall two of the best palettes out there are from the same company, Tarte. I love Tarte's shadows! They are well pigmented, easy to blend and the eye shadows last forever.

Proenza Schouler Spring 2010 Look

The look for Spring 2010 at Proenza Schouler was definitely inspired by Southern California. Think surfer girl (or maybe a skater girl), with slightly windblown tousled hair, a faint tan glow to the skin and natural makeup. Over all it's a look that many of us likely wear every weekend to varying degrees.

Pond's Original Clean Cleansing Wipes

The next entry in my quest to trial every makeup removing wipe on the market is also my favorite so far.

These cleansing wipes from Ponds are pretty no nonsense, but they certainly get the job done. They remove all makeup quickly and easily. Mascara can take a bit of scrubbing, but it does all come off. I love that the wipes are so big (I use 3-4 Arcona pads to really clean my face, I need 1 Ponds wipe), making it easy to always find a clean area to use next.

After using these wipes my skin feels perfectly clean, isn't overly dry and all makeup is gone. Definitely a product I'll use again.

Marchesa Spring 2010 Look

The inspiration behind the collection actually came from Madame Butterfly. “I wanted to capture the real look of Japan, create layers and bits of origami,” said designer Georgina Chapman.

But, looking at pictures of the Spring Marchesa show makes me want to go back to first grade and rethink my decision to quit ballet classes (really, it was for the best, I'm a huge klutz). For me this show was all about the tight, high ballet bun paired with fresh glowing skin and the emphasis on a big eye (made a little ethereal with the feathered lashes).

Hair Worthy of Prime Time: Quick Tips to Get it Yourself!

I get a lot of e-mails with info on how to achieve a certain look around award show season. I tend to pick the cream of the crop for posting, though I honestly feel a bit strange about that. Sure Heidi Klum looked gorgeous in her dress, or Angelina's cat eye was amazing. But frequently those looks aren't really workable for "everyday." And I want more everyday looks.

So, I was pretty excited when I received information from Aussie about how to achieve the looks we see on our favorite prime time shows. These looks are workable for every day, aren't very detailed and just should help you with your own look.

A Trip to the Original Kiehl's and a New Favorite Kiehl's Product!

Last week I finally went to New York City.  Somehow I've never been there (likely this is related to spending most of my twenties either in school or working in a hospital).  Most of my trip was related to this blog, and I spent a lot of time with other bloggers from the Total Beauty network.  We went all over the city meeting with brands, learning about their new products.  A lot of fragrances were sniffed, lotions sampled and you can only imagine how many different colors of lipstick and eye liner ended up on the backs of our hands.

For me one of the major highlights of the trip was our trip to the original Kiehl's store, where we were able to trial a few new products (you can see one of the rooms above, this is their facial skincare area).  I'm a huge Kiehl's fan (you can probably tell from this blog, I get pretty excited when trying out new things), and I have to say that I've even managed to suck my husband into my mania.  I somehow managed to not buy the whole store while I was there, but it was a struggle.

Read on to find out more about the products I'm so excited about and which one is now my new favorite Kiehl's product!

Four Amazing Products to Create Softer, Healthier Hair

leave in conditioners, review
I remember my first leave in conditioner. I was in High School, and my stylist recommended I try one to help combat the dryness at the ends of my long hair. Summer had taken it's toll. My mom dutifully bought a bottle of it for me at check out, and I couldn't wait to try it out the next day. The product definitely hydrated my hair, but even a small amount left my hair greasy and weighed down. I think I used the product for a few days and then it got tossed into a drawer of unused products.

Facial Cleansing Wipes: Which Brand Did I find Backstage at Fashion Week?

arcona, facial cleansing wipes, review
For the last few days I've been in New York (my first visit!) for a beauty blogging conference. Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2010 started yesterday, and I was lucky enough to tag along to a show with my friend Michelle from All Lacquered Up to Julie Haus's show. We went to meet Deborah Lippman (amazing! Love her!), but since we were backstage already we snuck around to check out the other beauty products.

De-frizz With Just a Different Shampoo: Living Proof

living proof shampoo conditioner review
I've mentioned Living Proof's products in the past. They're the products that work differently than other frizz products and were developed by a scientist at MIT (who really does research similar to my husband, but that's beside the point). You can watch their video to learn more about the products. In the past I've tried out their different styling cremes and sprays, and have found that they really did lessen the amount of time that I have to spend straightening my hair and that it stays straight pretty much all day. But what if you want to skip styling products all together? Or what if you'd like to just use a shampoo and conditioner? Well, luckily they've just come out with those!
