I am inexperienced with mineral makeup. Well, maybe that's putting it lightly. I've never used the stuff, and frankly it kind of scares me. I just picture myself with a little jar of powder, putting a heavy and very uneven application of it on my face, and then while trying to fix it dumping all of the makeup on the counter! So, when I had an opportunity to try out mineral makeup I decided that I should go ahead and give it a shot. After all, the whole "Swirl, Tap, Buff" thing seems to work for everyone trying out Bare Minerals at the front of Sephora, and if you really can get perfect application in a matter of minutes then I'm game!
I tried out the Mineral foundation and some accompanying products from Coastal Scents. This is a great on-line store with a huge selection of products, and if you want to give their products a try this is a perfect time since they are having a HUGE Cyber Monday Sale with 20% off the entire store, and there are crazy deals in their Garage Sale Clearance area.
The foundation I tried was the Silk Cover Mineral Foundation, which offers a "offers a creamy texture, full cover without a heavy look & a dewy finish." I used a small foundation brush and using the videos I found in the Bare Minerals How-To Section, I have been working on my Swirl, Tap and Buff technique.
I can see why people love the mineral makeup, and I definitely have to say that the Coastal Scent product is fantastic! I was able to easily cover any imperfections and redness in my skin without looking like I had makeup on, the texture was non-existant. As in, you could not tell I had on makeup! I just suddenly looked perfect! Even better, if I was able to acheive this with so little experience, that bodes well for those with practice! The foundation looked perfect throughout the day, and no touch ups were needed.
The next product that I tried out was the Concealer. This product is very similar to the Silk Cover Foundation, but offered quite a bit more coverage with the same great texture and staying power. Unfortunately, this product is available in only 1 shade, which is too dark for me. I did however try this out on a day that I knew I'd be home anyways!
I applied this product with the Foundation Concealer Brush, and it applies easily, is very blendable and offers just the right amount of coverage for my under-eye area. Coastal Scents does state that the best coverage and application for this product comes with using a brush like this, and I have to say that they are right. When I tried using a natural bristle brush the application was not as smooth, and I had issues with uneven coverage. Spend the $4 on that brush!
I tried using my Silk Cover Mineral Foundation with regular powder (from MAC) and with the Veil Effect Mineral Powder, and definitely have to recommend buying the Veil Effect with your mineral makeup. The Veil Effect maintains the same texture of the Mineral Foundation, has longer staying power and frankly just looks better over the Mineral Foundation than traditional powder does.
While I used mainly simple, everyday makeup brushes with my mineral makeup, over at Beauty Gizmo, (a blog with a lot more knowledge about mineral makeup than I have) has gone crazy for the powder dispensing brush. If you are serious about your mineral makeup, definitely check this one out! I made a huge mess every morning in my sink, but I can only imagine that this brush would not only make application faster and easier, but also makes your mineral makeup incredibly portable!
Don't forget the Cyber Monday Sale tomorrow over at Coastal Scents, and stay tuned for tomorrow's review where I'll be discussing my experience with the eye shadow, blush and gloss from their site!
